What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use OBS Studio on the spare Windows PC: add the sermon recording as a looping Media Source, connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream with its server URL and stream key, then check the YouTube preview before clicking Go live. The PC must remain awake and connected for the stream to continue, so test the complete setup before relying on it for a service.
Before you set up the PC
Check YouTube Live access
Verify that the channel is eligible to live stream and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of the service. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup instructions.
Check the computer and connection
OBS Studio supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 and lists a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU as a basic requirement. Meeting that baseline does not guarantee that an older PC can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate reliably. Install OBS, run its Auto Configuration Wizard, and test the actual machine and internet connection before scheduling the stream. OBS’s requirements are at OBS System Requirements.
Use a sermon recording you are authorized to stream. Having a copy does not necessarily mean the church has permission to livestream or archive every sermon, music bed, image, or other included material. Confirm that the relevant rights and licenses cover this use, including any limits on territory or online archives. YouTube’s setup guidance cannot determine whether a particular church’s licenses cover its specific content.

Set up a looping sermon in OBS
- Create a scene. Open OBS and create a scene for the sermon stream.
- Add the recording. In the Sources panel, choose + → Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop. OBS’s Media Source documentation explains that Loop plays the file again after playback completes and lists MP4 among supported formats: OBS Media Sources.
- Frame the picture. Check the OBS preview and size the source to fit the canvas. Make sure the sermon video is not cropped, squeezed, or obscured.
- Confirm playback and audio. Play the source and watch the OBS audio meters. Check that the recording’s sound is audible and at an appropriate level, and that the file starts as expected. Include any introductions or transitions in the recording itself if needed.
For a playlist rather than one repeating file, OBS provides a VLC Video source with playlist and loop-playlist options. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. That adds a software dependency; for one sermon file, Media Source is the simpler option.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream or choose one you have already scheduled.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream server URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes this connection at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Start the encoder first. In OBS, start streaming. Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and check its audio and picture before clicking Go live in YouTube.
- End both sides cleanly. At the end of the broadcast, end the event in YouTube and stop streaming in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a guarantee of an archive for a longer stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Choose encoder settings that the PC and connection can sustain
For a standard SDR sermon loop using H.264 over RTMP or RTMPS, prioritize a stable feed over the highest possible resolution. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Its encoder table recommends 5 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can sustain them.

| Setting | Practical choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec and protocol | H.264 over RTMPS where available | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. HLS supports different workflows and codecs and has higher latency; it is not necessary for this basic sermon loop. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends a constant bitrate for this encoder workflow. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | Matches YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for that resolution and frame rate. Test whether the connection can sustain it reliably. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Use a setting the spare PC can encode and the upload connection can sustain | Do not assume the machine’s basic compatibility or a speed-test result proves the full stream will be stable. |
These encoder recommendations are from YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Test the upload bitrate and choose a reliable setting. A static prerecorded sermon may be less demanding than a complex camera scene, but only a test on this PC and connection can establish how it performs.
Test before the service and keep the PC awake
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Use audio and video similar to the planned stream. Check the YouTube preview, stream health, sound, and picture; monitor them during the event as well.
- Allow time for checks. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder well before the scheduled start and starting it early enough to inspect the preview.
- Prevent sleep. Review Windows screen and sleep timeouts, and, for a laptop, check what happens when the lid closes. The labels and available options vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows power and sleep settings; sleep behavior also depends on system criteria described in Microsoft’s system power states documentation.
- Keep the connection stable. Test from the same network and location you will use for the service. An Ethernet cable may help if the PC and network support wired Ethernet, but it cannot guarantee a reliable connection.
- Check the content rights and stream details. Confirm the right video and audio are loaded, the event is scheduled as intended, and the stream key belongs to that event.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The sermon plays once and stops | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source | Open the source properties and enable Loop. Confirm the selected file is the one intended for the stream. |
| YouTube does not show a preview | OBS is not sending to the correct event, or the server URL or key is wrong | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current YouTube event. Verify the key without sharing it; reset it in Live Control Room if compromised. |
| The stream is unstable or the picture drops | The upload connection or PC may not sustain the selected output settings | Check YouTube stream health and repeat a rehearsal. Reduce resolution or bitrate to a setting that tests reliably; do not assume the published recommendation fits every connection. |
| Video or audio is missing in OBS | The wrong source, file, framing, or audio path may be selected | Check Media Source properties, the preview, and OBS audio meters. Confirm sound is audible before starting the YouTube event. |
| The stream stops after the operator leaves | The PC slept, the network disconnected, or OBS stopped | Review Windows sleep and laptop lid settings, then rehearse for the expected duration while monitoring the encoder and connection. |
| A playlist source does not work | VLC may be missing or its architecture may not match OBS | Install VLC and match its 32- or 64-bit architecture to OBS; for a single file, use the built-in Media Source instead. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use OBS to loop more than one sermon video?
Yes. Use OBS’s VLC Video source for a playlist and enable its loop-playlist option; VLC must be installed with the same architecture as OBS.
Does YouTube automatically archive a long sermon stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Longer streams may not be, so save the source recording separately.
