Scheduling a YouTube livestream creates an upcoming event; it does not play your videos. To run prerecorded videos continuously, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then connect a cloud playout service that sends your playlist to YouTube using the event’s stream key or an authorized integration. Test the feed in Live Control Room before relying on it unattended.
What “schedule a continuous livestream” means
There are two separate jobs. YouTube Studio creates the event, its watch page and start time. An encoder or cloud playout service supplies the video feed. A scheduled event can be promoted and viewers can opt into a start notification, but it will not begin playing your prerecorded files unless a feed is sent to it.
For a cloud workflow, choose a service whose current documentation confirms that it can play uploaded prerecorded videos continuously to YouTube. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and describes Upstream.so as a browser-based option for 24/7 streams. Those listings are discovery information, not a YouTube performance guarantee or a comparison of vendor features. Check each provider’s current controls, limits, availability and pricing before choosing.
Before scheduling: confirm eligibility, rights and duration
Check that the channel can go live
- YouTube’s current eligibility guidance requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube states that first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube’s current guidance sets a minimum age of 16 to livestream.
- Use only video and audio you have the right to stream. A public or scheduled event does not grant permission to use copyrighted material, and continuous prerecorded playback is not automatically eligible for monetization. Monetization depends on channel eligibility, including participation in the YouTube Partner Program.
Decide how you will handle a long-running broadcast
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will produce one complete archive: plan a separate recording or a restart and segmentation procedure if you need a complete VOD. A live stream and its resulting archive are different operational concerns.

Schedule the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Manage.
- Select Schedule Stream. Create a new event or reuse settings if appropriate.
- Set the title, description, privacy, audience and start time. Check the time zone and visibility before saving; these determine what viewers can see and when they can find the event.
- Keep the event open in Live Control Room. You will need its stream URL and stream key unless your playout provider uses an authorized YouTube integration.
Scheduling gives viewers an upcoming watch page and may surface the event in subscribers’ feeds. It does not start the encoder or playlist by itself.
Choose and configure cloud playout
Evaluate the service before uploading
- Playlist behavior: Confirm support for uploaded prerecorded files, ordering, looping or rotation, and a continuous YouTube feed.
- Cloud operation: Check whether setup and monitoring work in a browser and whether the service removes the need to leave a local PC running.
- Recovery: Ask what happens if the YouTube connection drops, a file fails, or the provider has an outage. Verify reconnect behavior, alerts and any failover controls rather than assuming “24/7” guarantees uninterrupted playback.
- Output compatibility: Confirm supported ingest protocol, codecs, resolution, frame rate and stream-key or account connection method.
- Archive and costs: Check storage, egress, stream-duration limits and current plan terms. YouTube’s directory does not establish vendor prices or compare their reliability.
Upload and arrange the videos
Upload or select files you have permission to stream, then create the playlist or rotation in the provider’s interface. Set the desired start behavior and confirm what happens at the end of the list. Exact menus and options vary by provider; YouTube Studio does not control the playlist or its rotation.

Connect the cloud feed to the event
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s Live Control Room, unless you are connecting through a provider’s authorized YouTube integration.
- Enter those details in the cloud service’s YouTube output settings, following the provider’s instructions. The stream key authorizes a feed to your channel: treat it like a password, do not share or publish it, and reset it if you suspect it has been exposed.
- Choose a protocol and output format supported by both YouTube and the service. Start with RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it as the secure extension to RTMP.
Set output quality and protocol deliberately
Use the cloud service’s current YouTube-compatible presets and match them to the actual resolution and frame rate of your source. YouTube’s general encoder guidance allows H.264, H.265 or AV1 video depending on workflow, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current resolution/bitrate guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every format.
RTMPS or HLS
RTMPS is the recommended ingest choice when the provider supports it. HLS is an alternative for certain codec or HDR workflows, but YouTube notes that it has higher latency because it sends video in segments. YouTube’s HLS requirements specify TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Use HLS only if the provider supports those requirements and its additional latency is acceptable.

Bandwidth for a locally encoded backup
If you also run an encoder on your own network as a backup, YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth above the total stream bitrate and suggests 20% headroom. For a cloud-only feed, the provider’s network and ingest capacity are dependencies instead; validate the complete path with an actual test.
Start the feed and verify playback
- Start the cloud playlist or stream according to the provider’s instructions.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that video and audio are both present and that the event is receiving the expected feed.
- Open the public watch page on another device, such as a phone, and confirm playback there too. A preview alone does not confirm the complete viewer experience.
- For a production broadcast where continuity matters, test the setup in advance and prepare a backup encoder or recovery procedure. YouTube recommends testing and checking preview, stream health, audio and video before an event.
- Check whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled for the encoder workflow you are using. These settings affect event behavior; they do not configure the cloud playlist.
Common problems and what to check
- The scheduled watch page exists but shows no video: The event is only the destination. Start the cloud feed and verify that it is sending to the matching stream URL and key.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check for a copied incorrectly or outdated stream key, the wrong event destination, or a protocol/format the provider does not support. Re-enter the current event details and inspect Live Control Room’s preview and health status.
- Audio or video is missing or incorrect: Check the selected playlist file, output codec and audio configuration, then inspect the preview and test playback on a separate device before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream disconnects: Check the provider’s connection status and recovery controls, then confirm whether YouTube is still receiving a feed. Do not assume recovery or failover behavior without verifying that the service supports it.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior covers streams under 12 hours; longer runs need an explicit recording or segmentation plan.
- A video is claimed, blocked or restricted: Review the rights to every video and audio track in the playlist and YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization status. A scheduled event does not clear rights.

Can I schedule a livestream without starting it immediately?
Yes. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio for its intended start time; the video feed still has to be sent by an encoder or cloud playout service.
