A 24/7 YouTube stream at a constant 10 Mbps uses about 108 GB of creator upload data per day, or about 3.24 TB in a 30-day month, before network overhead. At 6 Mbps, the equivalent estimate is 64.8 GB per day; at 17 Mbps, it is 183.6 GB per day. These are calculated stream-payload estimates, not readings from an ISP meter. In India, broadband cost depends on the plan available at your address and its terms—not simply on the number of gigabytes sent.
How to estimate a 24/7 stream’s data use
For a sustained, constant bitrate, estimate encoded stream data with these formulas:
- GB per hour: bitrate in Mbps × 0.45
- GB per day: bitrate in Mbps × 10.8
- GB per 30-day month: bitrate in Mbps × 324
The calculation converts megabits per second over time into decimal gigabytes. It estimates the stream payload before protocol overhead, bitrate variation, reconnections, or other household internet use. Actual router or provider totals can therefore differ.
Examples using YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists the settings below as recommended H.264 examples. The data figures are arithmetic based on those bitrate values, not usage measurements published by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance also varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Use the bitrate you actually send, not just the resolution shown in your encoder. If your bitrate changes over time, the constant-bitrate formula is an approximation.
Creator upload data is not viewers’ data
These estimates describe the outgoing stream from your encoder or streaming service to YouTube. They do not include the much larger, separate amount viewers may use when watching the stream. Your home connection is carrying the upload feed; each viewer’s playback uses that viewer’s own internet connection.

What broadband might cost in India
There is no single India-wide broadband price or plan that answers this question. The cost is generally the recurring local plan charge and any applicable taxes or other fees, rather than a simple per-GB charge. Provider plan pages provide examples, not a nationwide quote, and availability and terms can vary by address.

Do not treat the word “unlimited” on a plan page as proof that every plan has no fair-use, commercial-use, or post-threshold speed restrictions. Before choosing a plan, confirm its full tariff and check the following:

- Whether the listed speed is download, upload, or both, and what upload speed is available at your address.
- Any fair-use threshold, commercial-use condition, or speed reduction after a threshold.
- Whether GST is included, plus installation, equipment, or other charges.
- Local availability and the recurring price and duration for the exact plan.
- Whether the connection can sustain the upload reliably, not merely reach a headline speed in a brief test.
How much upload speed does a 24/7 stream need?
Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and specifically cautions that download speed is often higher than outbound speed. For a 10 Mbps stream, applying that 20% guidance means at least 12 Mbps of available upload as a basic headroom calculation. A shared or variable connection may need more to remain stable. Test upload speed at the location and time you plan to stream, and test with representative audio and movement. Monitor YouTube’s stream health while testing. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not guarantee that upload capacity will remain steady for a continuous broadcast.

Encoder settings that affect the calculation
- Bitrate: Choose a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one value fits every stream. The examples above use YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for encoder output.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS among the supported protocol options.
- Audio and content: Include representative audio and movement when testing, since the real stream—not an idle or unusually simple test—is what the connection must carry.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will be archived as a single complete video or can run indefinitely without interruption. Plan with that limitation in mind rather than assuming a continuous broadcast will produce one complete archive. YouTube also notes that expensive equipment is not required to get started. Choose by sustained upload and actual terms
For a DIY stream, estimate monthly payload from the bitrate you will send, then verify that your local plan can sustain the required upload with headroom. Compare plans using the actual upload capacity, service availability, fair-use and post-threshold terms, commercial-use conditions, tax-inclusive recurring cost, installation or equipment fees, and contract or prepaid duration. The Airtel and Jio figures above are regional or provider-page examples, not a basis for ranking broadband providers across India.
