Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

First verify that your FFmpeg build, GPU, and driver support NVENC; then test the stream privately or unlisted before using it for a public broadcast.
What you need before starting
- An FFmpeg build that lists
h264_nvencas an available video encoder. - An NVIDIA GPU and driver combination that supports the encoder features required by your installed FFmpeg build.
- Video files in the order you want them played, plus a playlist manifest saved on the streaming computer.
- A YouTube Live event and its stream-specific server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- A reliable upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen output quality.
NVENC is hardware video encoding, but having an NVIDIA GPU does not by itself guarantee that the FFmpeg executable you installed can use it. FFmpeg support depends on how that binary was built, and compatibility also depends on the GPU and driver. Check your setup before planning a long-running broadcast.
Check the installed FFmpeg encoder
In a terminal or command prompt, run ffmpeg -version to identify the installed build. Then run ffmpeg -encoders and look for h264_nvenc. If it is absent, this FFmpeg binary cannot use that encoder as installed. Check the build you obtained and your GPU and driver compatibility rather than assuming that another command-line option will enable it.
Build an ordered playlist manifest
The concat demuxer reads a text manifest containing one file entry per clip. Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt in the working directory, with the header and entries in playback order:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'path/to/first-video.mp4'
file 'path/to/second-video.mp4'
file 'path/to/third-video.mp4'
Replace the example paths with the actual locations of your files. Relative paths are interpreted from the process’s working directory; verify that every listed file exists and that filenames containing quotes or unusual characters are handled safely. For absolute or otherwise non-safe paths, the command below uses -safe 0. Use that option only with a manifest you control, not an untrusted playlist.
Check whether the clips can be joined this way
The concat demuxer is convenient when the files have compatible stream layouts. Clips that differ in resolution, frame rate, codecs, or audio layout can cause problems at boundaries or during processing. Because this workflow re-encodes the output, you may need to normalize the clips or use FFmpeg’s concat filter and suitable filters instead of assuming that a manifest will make dissimilar media seamless. Test transitions with the actual files; gapless playback is not guaranteed.

Create the YouTube Live event and copy its ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the live stream and select the intended stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the RTMPS server URL where available.
- Keep both values private. YouTube describes stream keys as like the stream’s password and address. If a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
Do not publish your key in a shared script, public repository, screenshot, or support post. The command template below uses placeholders; never replace them in material you intend to share.
Loop the playlist and send it through NVENC

Replace the destination with the server URL and key YouTube Studio provides, in the format accepted by that ingest endpoint. The placeholder does not establish a universal URL format. Avoid leaving a real key in shell history or a script that others can read. A protected environment variable or private configuration mechanism may reduce exposure, but credential handling depends on the shell and FFmpeg build you use.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance (accessed in 2026) recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan, square pixels, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio; for stereo, its advanced guidance specifies a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate.

The example command specifies an encoder and audio bitrate, but it does not set every recommended output property. Check the source streams and configure the encoder for your target resolution, frame rate, CBR mode, keyframe interval, progressive scan, and square pixels as appropriate for your FFmpeg version and input. For stereo AAC, set the sample rate to 44.1 kHz if it suits the source and workflow. Do not choose a video bitrate without considering resolution, frame rate, source quality, and the upload connection: YouTube’s guidance does not justify one universal bitrate for every stream.
YouTube transcodes live video into multiple playback formats, but transcoding does not compensate for an unstable feed. YouTube advises choosing a quality your upload connection can sustain and testing upload speed. The exact encoder options available can vary by FFmpeg build, so check that your installed version accepts the settings you intend to use.

Test the stream, then monitor it live
- Start with a private or unlisted test using representative clips, sound, and motion.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming stream preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Confirm that the preview shows moving video and that audio is present and correctly routed.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and address warnings before making a scheduled stream public. If the workflow requires it, use the Go live control after the preview is ready.
- During the broadcast, watch stream health and the FFmpeg process for errors or interruptions.
- When finished, stop the stream using YouTube’s interface as directed, then stop the FFmpeg process.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Unknown encoder 'h264_nvenc' or the encoder is missing from the list |
The installed FFmpeg build does not expose NVENC, or the GPU and driver do not support the required setup. | Run ffmpeg -encoders; verify the FFmpeg build, GPU, and driver combination. Do not assume the GPU brand alone guarantees support. |
| Playlist file or media cannot be opened | A path is wrong, relative to a different working directory, or rejected by safe-path handling. | Check the manifest spelling and working directory. Use -safe 0 only for a playlist you control, particularly when it contains absolute paths. |
| Errors or glitches at clip boundaries | Input clips may have mismatched stream properties or layouts. | Inspect and normalize the inputs, or use a concat-filter workflow when re-encoding and filtering are needed. Test the transition points rather than assuming seamless joins. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The event may be wrong, the server URL or key may be incorrect, or the connection may be unstable. | Copy the event-specific ingest details again from YouTube Studio, verify the destination, and check the network and stream-health messages. |
| Video arrives but audio is missing or unsuitable | The input may have no audio, an unexpected layout, or incompatible settings. | Inspect the source audio streams and confirm the chosen AAC settings, sample rate, and channel layout. Test with representative sound in the preview. |
| Stream-health warnings or dropped transmission | The upload connection may not sustain the selected output settings, or the encoder may be struggling. | Choose a lower output quality if necessary, test upload speed, review FFmpeg errors, and confirm the machine can keep encoding continuously. |
| The preview is ready but the scheduled event is not public | The stream may require a separate action in Live Control Room. | Follow the event workflow and use Go live when YouTube presents that control. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having a playlist and a working encoder does not establish that you have permission to broadcast its contents or that a channel qualifies for any particular YouTube feature. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for every video and audio track, including music, game footage, and third-party material. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules in your account and region. A technical test cannot establish that a stream is policy-compliant or eligible for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
For YouTube-only prerecorded playlists, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud after you upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. It streams what you uploaded at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The first free day is one per account. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
