To hear a prerecorded clip in the church while OBS sends it to YouTube, set OBS’s Monitoring Device to the headphones, speakers, or audio-interface output the operator will use, then choose a monitoring mode for the clip’s Media Source in Advanced Audio Properties. Use Monitor and Output if OBS is not capturing the computer’s playback through another route. If Desktop Audio already captures that playback, Monitor Only may avoid sending the same clip twice—but only if that captured route reaches the stream. Verify the routing with a short recording before the service.
How OBS audio monitoring works
OBS monitoring controls where an audio source is heard locally; it is separate from whether that source reaches OBS’s stream or recording output. The setting is chosen per source, so the correct option depends on how the clip’s audio is routed.
- Monitoring Device: the local output where monitored audio plays, selected in OBS’s audio settings.
- Monitor Only (mute output): plays the source through the monitoring device, but does not send that source itself to OBS’s output.
- Monitor and Output: plays the source locally and sends it to OBS’s output.
- Monitor Off: does not play the source through the monitoring device; the source can still be sent to OBS’s output.
These distinctions matter when Desktop Audio or another capture source also picks up the computer’s playback. If two OBS paths carry the same sound, the stream can contain doubled audio. “Monitor Only” is not a universal way to keep audio in the stream: it works only when another OBS-captured path carries the playback.
Set the monitoring device and source mode
- Choose the local listening output. In OBS Studio, open Settings > Audio. Under Monitoring Device, select the output volunteers should listen through: for example, the computer’s headphone output, speakers, or an audio-interface output. The device name depends on the connected computer and hardware.
- Open the source’s audio options. Play the scene containing the prerecorded clip, then open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer gear or OBS’s Edit menu. Find the clip’s Media Source.
- Choose a monitoring mode based on the signal path. Use the guidance below rather than assuming one mode fits every church setup.
- Rehearse and record. Make a short recording with the ordinary service setup and listen to the file. Confirm the room hears the clip and that the recording contains it once, without silence or duplication.
Choose the right monitoring mode for your routing
| What OBS is capturing | Media Source mode | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| OBS is not capturing the room or computer playback output, and the clip needs to be heard locally and reach viewers. | Monitor and Output | Listen through the selected headphones or speakers, then confirm the test recording includes the clip. |
| OBS captures the same computer playback through Desktop Audio, and the clip also needs local playback. | Monitor Only (mute output) may fit this route. | Confirm Desktop Audio carries the clip into the test recording once. If it does not, viewers will not hear the Media Source through that route. |
| The clip should be heard in the stream or recording, but not through the local monitoring device. | Monitor Off | Confirm the clip is absent from local monitoring and present in the test recording. |
A church operator’s setup may send a Media Source to the room while Desktop Audio captures the room playback; in that case, monitoring the source locally without also outputting it directly can help prevent duplication. Treat that as an example, not a universal wiring rule. Identify which OBS source actually carries the sound to the stream, then check the recorded result.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check levels and prevent echo before the service
Use the Audio Mixer while the clip plays. Check the relevant source’s meter and controls, including whether it is muted, and listen both through the selected device and through OBS audio monitoring. A meter alone cannot tell you whether the room or the final stream recording sounds right.
- Play the clip in the actual service scene and confirm the intended headphones, speakers, or interface output is audible.
- Watch the relevant OBS meters as the clip plays; check for an unintended mute or signs of clipping.
- Record a short rehearsal with the usual configuration and listen back for silence, duplicated playback, or missing program audio.
- If the clip is missing or doubled, trace whether Desktop Audio or another output-capture source is also carrying it before changing the Media Source mode.
OBS warns that adding an Audio Input/Output Capture source while the same device is already enabled globally can cause echo. Check for duplicate capture paths if you hear an echo or doubling; do not assume the Media Source’s monitoring option is the only possible cause.

Troubleshoot common problems
The volunteer cannot hear the clip
Check Settings > Audio > Monitoring Device and confirm it names the output actually connected to the headphones or speakers. Then check the Media Source’s monitoring mode in Advanced Audio Properties and confirm the output device itself is working.
The clip is audible locally but missing from the recording
If the source is set to Monitor Only (mute output), it is not sent to OBS’s output by that source. Switch to Monitor and Output if no other OBS capture route carries the playback, or verify that Desktop Audio or another intended capture source is active and includes it.

The stream recording contains doubled audio
Look for two paths carrying the same sound—for example, the Media Source set to Monitor and Output while Desktop Audio also captures the monitored playback. Also check whether the same device is enabled globally and added again as an Audio Input/Output Capture source. Adjust the routing so the clip reaches OBS output once, then make another test recording.
The meter moves, but the room or stream still sounds wrong
Listen at the selected output and play back a test recording. The meter shows signal activity, but the listening checks reveal whether that signal reaches the intended local device and the final OBS output.

Or let it run in the cloud
OBS monitoring is for routing audio in a local production setup. If the separate goal is to keep prerecorded video streaming to a YouTube channel 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
