To keep a church worship sequence in order on a continuous YouTube live stream, arrange the media files in your encoder, disable shuffle, and enable looping if the sequence should repeat. In OBS, use a VLC Video source for multiple files or a Media Source for one prepared file. Reordering a YouTube playlist changes playlist playback; it does not reorder the separate feed sent by an encoder.
First, identify which playlist you need to reorder
There are two different playback paths, and changing one does not change the other:
- A YouTube playlist: YouTube’s playlist controls set the order when viewers play that playlist on YouTube.
- An encoder’s media playlist: OBS or another encoder assembles files into the outgoing live video. Its file order controls what appears in the broadcast.
If your church is sending a continuous live feed from OBS, set the order in OBS. Reordering a YouTube playlist alone will not change the encoder’s broadcast.
Reorder a playlist on YouTube
If you mean a playlist viewers watch directly on YouTube, open the playlist and drag videos into the desired order. YouTube also documents temporary reordering from the playlist panel on a watch page, as well as playlist ordering controls in YouTube Studio. Set up an ordered, repeating worship playlist in OBS
For several separate files: use VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to be available.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you plan to stream.
- Open the source’s properties, add the worship media files, and arrange them in the sequence you want viewers to hear and see.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off. This preserves the configured order rather than playing files randomly.
- Turn Loop Playlist on if the sequence should restart after the last file. OBS describes this setting as specifying whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files.
- Confirm the source is visible and active in your scene, then check that the preview shows the intended file and audio.
For one prepared program file: use Media Source
If the entire worship program is already a single media file, add an OBS Media Source and use its loop control if you want that file to repeat. This is simpler than managing a multi-file list, but changing the order of individual songs requires editing or rebuilding the prepared file.
OBS interface labels can vary by version. If a setting is not where expected, check the properties for the source and the documentation for your installed OBS version. See OBS Project: Media Sources.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live safely
- In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
- Enter those details in OBS’s stream settings so the encoder can send its feed to YouTube Live.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start with a private or unlisted check, if appropriate for your event, and verify that YouTube’s preview shows the intended sequence and audio before sharing the public stream.
YouTube documents the encoder stream URL and key in its live-stream settings guidance. DVR is a viewer playback control, not a playlist-order setting; YouTube also notes rewind limitations for very long live streams. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams
Check copyright and permissions before broadcasting
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, the live stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even if you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist for the stream to proceed without those interruptions. Check permissions for each relevant element rather than assuming one general church-performance license covers everything: the composition, arrangement or translation, specific sound recording, visuals, destination, territory, archive use, and term. Confirm the scope with the relevant rights holder or licensing provider; YouTube’s detection guidance does not establish what any particular license covers.
Choose the OBS source that fits the program

Troubleshoot order and playback problems
- Songs play in a different order each time: Open the VLC Video source properties and turn off Shuffle Playlist.
- The sequence stops at the last file: Turn on Loop Playlist for VLC Video, or the loop control for a single-file Media Source.
- VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source options: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check again.
- The YouTube playlist is correct but the live stream is not: Reorder the files in the encoder’s source; YouTube playlist ordering does not configure the outgoing encoder feed.
- The stream preview shows the wrong scene or media: Confirm the intended source is active in the selected OBS scene and inspect the preview and audio before sharing the stream.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the live stream: Review the third-party content in the broadcast and confirm the applicable rights. If you have a license, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted.
