It depends on whether you mean one fixed playlist or new recordings added every day. For a library growing by 24 hours of video each day, a useful estimate is combined bitrate in Mbps × hours × 0.45 = decimal GB. At YouTube’s recommended 1080p SDR standard-frame-rate video bitrate plus its stereo-audio reference, that is about 90.6 GB per day, or roughly 33.0 TB for 365 days of new files. These are calculations from reference bitrates, not measurements of a particular sleep-sound export.
First decide what “24/7 library” means
Continuous playback does not, by itself, increase the size of the files you store. What matters is how much distinct video you keep, its encoded bitrate, and how many copies or versions you retain.
- A fixed collection playing continuously: Count each source file once. Replaying the same playlist for a year does not create a year’s worth of additional files.
- New 24-hour recordings retained every day: Multiply the estimated daily file size by the number of days kept. A year of new files is much larger than a fixed collection that loops.
- One rendered 24-hour loop: Estimate the file from its own duration and combined bitrate. If you render it once and reuse it, do not count it as 365 separate days of video.
- An existing mixed-length archive: Add the actual file sizes for the most reliable total. If you estimate instead, group files with similar bitrates and settings, then calculate each group separately.
Estimate storage from bitrate and duration
For decimal units, where 1 TB = 1,000 GB, use:
- GB per hour ≈ combined bitrate in Mbps × 0.45
- GB per day ≈ combined bitrate in Mbps × 10.8
- TB per 365-day year ≈ combined bitrate in Mbps × 3.942
The factor comes from converting megabits per second to bytes over time: 1 Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte is 450,000,000 bytes, or 0.45 decimal GB. Use the video and audio bitrates together for the combined bitrate.
Worked 1080p example
YouTube’s current recommended upload encoding guidance lists 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR video at standard frame rate and 384 kbps (0.384 Mbps) for stereo audio. Together, those reference rates total 8.384 Mbps. Applying the formula gives about 90.5 GB per 24 hours and about 33.0 TB for 365 days of new recordings. The rounded scenario estimate is about 90.6 GB a day; small differences come from rounding. These are calculations from YouTube’s reference bitrates, not measurements of a specific export. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings are a reference, not a requirement for every sleep video.

Planning estimates at YouTube’s SDR reference bitrates
The estimates below add YouTube’s stereo-audio reference of 384 kbps to its video references for standard-frame-rate SDR. They assume 24 hours of new files every day, use decimal units, and exclude backups, extra versions, filesystem overhead, and capacity headroom.

The video references are 5 Mbps for 720p, 8 Mbps for 1080p, and 35–45 Mbps for 2160p (4K), each at standard frame rate; the stereo-audio reference is 384 kbps. They are YouTube guidance figures, not predictions of the bitrate or size of a particular sleep-sound file. Resolution is not enough to predict file size
Two videos at the same resolution can have different file sizes because duration and encoded bitrate matter. Codec, export settings, audio configuration, and content can also affect the result. Static or low-motion visuals may compress differently from complex motion, but do not assume a particular saving without measuring representative exports.
YouTube’s suggested bitrate is an upload reference; it does not mean every sleep video must use that rate. When you have the actual files, use their sizes. For planned exports, render a representative sample with the settings you intend to use, check its file size and duration, and estimate from that sample before committing to a long archive plan.

Budget for copies and retention, not just the stream
The estimates count encoded files only. Your usable storage requirement will be higher if you keep separate masters and upload versions, backups, working copies, or extra headroom. Decide how long raw recordings and finished videos stay in the archive, and whether every version needs to be retained. Then compare usable capacity—not just a drive’s advertised capacity—with the resulting total.
For a fixed playlist, count the retained source files and the copies you need. For daily additions, multiply the per-day estimate by the retention period, then add the space for copies and headroom. An external drive is one possible local-storage category, but the figures here do not establish a specific model, capacity, price, or recommendation.
