To loop a prepared Tamil gospel song or sermon file on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i, configure the output for YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and send it to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Preview and monitor the feed before and during the broadcast. The loop option requests repeated playback; it does not guarantee a seamless transition or an uninterrupted stream.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current guidance says streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Install FFmpeg and have a prepared media file or playlist source accessible to the computer that will run the encoder. This workflow sends files; it does not establish a requirement to buy specific hardware.
- Use an upload connection capable of sustaining the selected video and audio bitrate, with capacity to spare for normal network variation.
- Confirm you have rights to every song, recording, arrangement, backing track, sermon recording, and other material you plan to stream and archive.
Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a new stream or schedule one.
- In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the server URL and stream key. Use the actual RTMPS URL YouTube provides for the event; do not guess or reuse an address from an unrelated setup.
- Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, put it in a public script, or share a screenshot that shows it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room.
YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password/address credential. Its encoder setup guidance explains how to configure an encoder and connect to the event.
Build an FFmpeg loop command
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option requests an infinite loop. Place it before the input’s -i. For file-based real-time output, -re reads the input at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as possible. A schematic command is:

This is an illustrative H.264 1080p30 configuration, not a universally validated command. Replace the media path and ingest URL/key with your own values, and verify that the FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder. Select bitrate and other options for your actual codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and connection. Avoid leaving a real stream key in shell history or a script that others can read.
Why the example settings need adjustment
YouTube’s current encoder table lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate. Those are YouTube’s published configuration figures, not a promise of picture quality or stream stability. The example’s 5 Mbps video bitrate is the table’s minimum, not its recommended value; choose a suitable value from YouTube’s current encoder settings for your intended mode and available upload capacity.

- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options. The FFmpeg example uses H.264; another codec requires a compatible encoder and matching settings.
- Bitrate: Use the table row for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Keep the total video-plus-audio bitrate below what your upload connection can sustain reliably.
- Frame rate and resolution: Match the output to the source and the mode you intend to send. Do not force a higher frame rate or resolution than the recording supports without a reason.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. With the example’s 30 fps output,
-g 60requests a 60-frame GOP (two seconds); change it if you use a different frame rate. - Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). The example sets a target and maximum bitrate, but FFmpeg encoder behavior depends on the selected encoder and its options. Confirm the encoder is operating as intended.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers. Use the URL in Live Control Room. FFmpeg’s FLV publishing pattern is commonly used with RTMP-family ingest; ensure your chosen output and YouTube-provided endpoint are compatible.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Choose an audio bitrate and sample rate supported by the selected encoder and appropriate to the source.
FFmpeg documents real-time input and RTMP publishing patterns in its protocol documentation and input options in its command-line documentation. The settings above are a template: the official FFmpeg and YouTube references do not validate one complete command against every account, file, FFmpeg build, or ingest configuration.
Start, preview, and end the live stream
- Start the FFmpeg command. Watch its output for connection errors, encoder failures, or repeated reconnects.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check that video is visible and audio is audible and correctly balanced.
- When the preview is healthy, start the event in Live Control Room if the event workflow requires it.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and the FFmpeg process while live. Also check that the watch page works on the channel and on mobile if those are important for your audience.
- To finish, stop FFmpeg’s content delivery, then use the Live Control Room end controls as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that rule covers longer sessions.

Clear rights before looping songs or sermons
You are responsible for obtaining the necessary rights for both the live broadcast and any resulting archive. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube livestream terms.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; if the content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the live stream. Even if you believe you have a licence for a track, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to prevent interruption. Tamil-language or gospel subject matter does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast a recording, arrangement, backing track, or sermon recording.

Troubleshoot common failures
