For a dedicated PC running a continuous YouTube stream, enable Replay Buffer in OBS under Settings → Output, choose a replay duration that covers the footage you might need to save, and assign a Save Replay Buffer hotkey under Settings → Hotkeys. There is no universally correct duration or memory setting: the right choice depends on the clip you need, the PC, and the stream workload. Test the complete setup before relying on it live.
What Replay Buffer does—and what it does not do
OBS Replay Buffer keeps a rolling window of recent footage so you can save it after something happens. It is a recording-side feature, separate from the settings that send your live program to YouTube. Enabling the buffer alone is not enough: you also need to start it and assign a save action.
Replay Buffer is useful when you want to retain a recent moment from a loop stream without continuously keeping every moment as a separate saved clip. It does not set YouTube’s ingest quality, guarantee that the stream stays online, or provide recovery from a PC or network failure.
Configure YouTube output separately
First configure OBS for the resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and connection you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder guidance varies by codec and output resolution and frame rate, so use its current recommendations for your exact target rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS, checking upload capacity with a speed test, testing with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its live encoder settings guidance.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not make an unstable or unsuitable signal safe to send. Choose a bitrate appropriate for the selected output and the actual upload connection, with enough headroom for reliable operation.
If you need a starting point for the live output, OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard takes intended use, computer resources, and network conditions into account. Treat its result as a starting configuration, not a substitute for testing the actual loop and replay workload.

Enable Replay Buffer and choose a duration
- Open Settings → Output. Find the Replay Buffer controls. Depending on output mode and OBS release, the layout can differ; use the controls shown in your installed version.
- Enable Replay Buffer. Set Maximum Replay Time to the length of the recent segment you may need to keep. Choose a duration based on your workflow, not an assumed universal best setting.
- Review the memory estimate or limit shown by OBS. Where available, use the displayed estimate to understand the cost of the selected duration. Do not treat it as a blanket recommendation for how much RAM to allocate: memory use and performance depend on the output, encoder, frame rate, and implementation.
- Choose a recording destination. Set a clear Recording Path and filename convention that make saved replays easy to find. Confirm the destination has sufficient free space for the recordings you expect to keep.
The OBS Project’s OBS Studio Overview Guide describes Replay Buffer in the recording settings. Current interface labels include “Maximum Replay Time” and “Maximum Memory,” but interface details can change between releases.
Assign a save hotkey and verify the clip
- Open Settings → Hotkeys.
- Find Save Replay Buffer and assign a key or key combination that does not conflict with other controls you use.
- Apply the settings, start the Replay Buffer, and run a short test using representative video and audio.
- Trigger the save hotkey. Open the resulting file and check its duration, audio, playback, and destination before relying on it during a live stream.
OBS notes that a hotkey must be set to save the buffer. Its overview guide says, “It’s strongly recommended that you test everything as best as you can before starting your first live stream.”

Start the buffer and stream; test automation cautiously
Start Replay Buffer and start streaming as separate operations. OBS documents the launch parameters --startreplaybuffer and --startstreaming for starting those functions. They can be building blocks for startup automation, but confirm how they behave with your operating system and OBS release before depending on them.
Launch parameters do not establish recovery from power loss, a network outage, an expired account session, or an OBS crash. For unattended operation, monitor OBS dropped frames and encoding performance, YouTube stream health, available disk space, and whether the expected replay files are actually being produced.

Choose settings by testing the real workload
A PC that meets OBS’s minimum system requirements is not guaranteed to sustain a particular stream and Replay Buffer configuration. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect performance. OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide also notes that separate recording settings can consume additional resources.
- Decide how far back you need to be able to save footage, then set that as the intended replay window.
- Run OBS with the actual loop, output settings, and scenes you plan to use for a representative period.
- Save a replay near the end of the test and inspect its length, sound, and playback.
- Check OBS performance indicators and YouTube stream health during the test. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- If the test shows dropped frames, encoding overload, or a replay shorter than expected, reduce the workload or revisit the settings and test again. More memory alone may not address an encoder or connection bottleneck.
Save a working configuration in an OBS Profile if you need to reproduce it. Profiles include Stream, Video, and Output settings; see the OBS Studio Profiles guide.

Troubleshooting common Replay Buffer problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No replay file is saved | The buffer was not started, or no save hotkey was assigned. | Start Replay Buffer, confirm the Save Replay Buffer action has a hotkey in Settings → Hotkeys, then test it. |
| The file is missing or hard to locate | The Recording Path points somewhere unexpected, or the destination is not writable or lacks space. | Review the recording path and available disk space; save a test and open it from the configured folder. |
| The replay is shorter than expected | The buffer may not have been running long enough, or the configured maximum time differs from the intended window. | Confirm the buffer is active for the full desired period, review Maximum Replay Time, and inspect another test file. |
| Stream drops frames or OBS reports encoding trouble | The combined encoding and scene workload may exceed available PC or connection capacity. | Check OBS performance and YouTube stream health; retest after reducing workload or adjusting output to fit the connection and encoder. |
| Automation starts only one function | Streaming and Replay Buffer have separate startup controls. | Check that the intended launch parameters and startup behavior are configured for both functions; verify after an OBS restart. |
