To stream a video stored in Amazon S3 to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, give FFmpeg authorized access to the object, then send its real-time output to the RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For a private S3 object, a presigned HTTPS URL is a practical option. This sends a prerecorded file as a live stream; it is not a direct S3-to-YouTube integration or a camera stream.

How do I stream an S3 video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg?

  1. Prepare the S3 input. For a private object, create a presigned URL that permits a GET request. AWS explains that a presigned URL provides temporary access based on the permissions of the principal who created it. Keep the complete URL secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to use it while it remains valid. See AWS documentation on presigned URLs and sharing objects with presigned URLs.
  2. Get the current YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the scheduled or current stream configuration and copy its RTMPS URL and stream key. Use the endpoint YouTube displays for that stream, not an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube’s instructions describe using RTMPS and entering the stream key; its developer documentation specifies RTMPS ingestion over port 443. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance, YouTube’s ingestion protocol guide, and YouTube Live Streams API documentation.
  3. Run FFmpeg with the S3 URL as input and YouTube as output. This illustrative command reads the file at real-time speed, encodes video and audio, and sends an FLV output over the RTMP-family protocol:
ffmpeg -re -i "$S3_PRESIGNED_URL"
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

Set S3_PRESIGNED_URL to the complete, unmodified HTTPS URL returned by AWS. Set the output using the RTMPS URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat both as credentials: do not place real values in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or source control. FFmpeg documents -i as its input mechanism and supports RTMPS; consult its command-line documentation, protocol documentation, and format documentation.

The codec options above are a starting shape, not a universal YouTube preset. Select resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and keyframe behavior for your source and target by checking YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. The correct values depend on what you intend to broadcast.

  1. Check the feed before broadcasting. Confirm that the video is reaching YouTube and looks and sounds right in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. Sending data to the ingest endpoint does not by itself create a scheduled event or make the broadcast public.

Can FFmpeg read an S3 presigned URL?

Yes. FFmpeg accepts a URL as an input, and a presigned HTTPS URL can give it temporary authorized access to an S3 object. The bucket does not need to be made public for this approach.

Input choice Access and confidentiality Expiry and recovery When it fits
Intentionally public object URL The object is publicly retrievable if its access configuration permits it. Anyone who can access the URL may retrieve the object. No presigned-URL expiry to manage; availability still depends on the object and its access configuration. Only when public access is deliberate and appropriate for the content.
Private object with presigned URL Grants time-limited access without changing the bucket policy. The URL itself is a bearer credential and should be kept secret. AWS evaluates expiry when a request is made. A transfer started before expiry can finish, but a reconnect after expiry fails; create a fresh URL when needed. The safer fit for the typical private-bucket workflow.

For S3’s expiry behavior and access model, see AWS presigned URL guidance. Set the validity period long enough for the stream and any expected restart. If the URL expires before FFmpeg reconnects, generate a new one and restart or reconnect using that URL.

How do I use RTMPS with FFmpeg?

Use the RTMPS URL supplied for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, together with that stream’s key. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP and its developer guidance identifies port 443 for RTMPS ingestion. The exact endpoint and key are stream-specific, so do not treat a sample URL as a permanent destination. The command’s output form combines the RTMPS URL and key; follow the format shown in the current YouTube configuration.

How do I repeat a video, and what does -re do?

The -re input option reads a file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible. That is useful when presenting a prerecorded file as a live stream. FFmpeg also has stream-loop options for repeating a source, but looping the input does not create a YouTube scheduled event and does not guarantee seamless transitions. Test the playback in Live Control Room rather than assuming a loop will appear continuous to viewers.

Should FFmpeg run on a local computer or a cloud host?

Execution location Uptime and network Monitoring Cost and data path
Local computer The process stops if the computer sleeps, loses connectivity, or exits. It needs reliable network access to both S3 and YouTube. You need to monitor the host and FFmpeg process, especially for unattended streams. Costs depend on your equipment, electricity, network, and where data transfer occurs; no general cost or performance figure applies.
Persistent cloud host Can remain running independently of a home computer, but still needs reliable access to S3 and YouTube. Plan monitoring and recovery for the host and stream process. Costs depend on the chosen host and data-transfer path; no general cost or performance figure applies.

These are operational trade-offs, not a guaranteed uptime or performance comparison. Either setup depends on S3 availability, network access, FFmpeg continuing to run, and the YouTube ingest connection.

Troubleshooting an S3-to-YouTube FFmpeg stream

  • FFmpeg cannot open the input: Confirm the presigned URL is complete and unchanged, has not expired, and refers to an object the signing principal can access. A private S3 object is not anonymously readable.
  • The stream stops after a reconnect: The presigned URL may have expired. AWS allows an already-started transfer to finish after expiry, but a later request or reconnect fails. Generate a fresh URL and restart with it.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the RTMPS URL and stream key against the current Live Control Room details. Ensure the host can reach S3 and YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and inspect FFmpeg’s output for connection or input errors.
  • The video plays too quickly: Include -re for a prerecorded file so FFmpeg reads at the file’s native rate.
  • The image or sound is unsuitable: Revisit resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec and keyframe choices against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and the source file; the example command is not a fixed preset.
  • The process ends unexpectedly: Check whether the host slept, lost network connectivity, or the FFmpeg process exited. For unattended streaming, use a persistent runtime and monitoring.
  • The loop has a gap or fails to behave as expected: A loop option repeats the source but does not promise seamless transitions. Verify the actual result in YouTube Live Control Room.
