OBS Media Source vs VLC Video for Looping Podcast Episodes on YouTube Live

Use OBS Media Source with Loop for one repeating episode, or VLC Video with Loop Playlist for a sequence. Here’s how to configure playback and YouTube Live separately.

For one podcast episode that should repeat, use OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a sequence of episodes, use VLC Video, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC Video requires VLC installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. These choices control playback inside OBS—not the connection to YouTube Live, which you configure separately.

Which OBS source should you use?

Your setup Choose Why
One local podcast episode repeating Media Source Its Loop control repeats a single file when playback ends. The documented default is Off.
Several episodes playing in sequence and repeating VLC Video It supports a playlist. Loop Playlist restarts playback when the playlist ends; the documented default is On.

Both are playback sources in OBS. Neither connects OBS to YouTube by itself, nor does looping guarantee a stable live broadcast. Set up and monitor the YouTube encoder connection separately.

How the sources differ

Media Source: simplest for one file

OBS Media Source plays a local media file without a VLC installation requirement stated in OBS’s documentation. Its Loop option is off by default, so turn it on if the episode should repeat. OBS documents supported formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Verify that your actual file plays in the OBS version and operating system you plan to use.

The Media Sources documentation also describes controls for restarting playback when the source becomes active and closing the file when the source becomes inactive. Consider those behaviors if your scenes switch during the broadcast.

VLC Video: better suited to an episode playlist

VLC Video uses VLC libraries for extended media support and can play a playlist of media items, including videos. Install VLC before using the source. OBS specifically says that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Loop Playlist is documented as on by default; check the setting rather than relying on the default. VLC Video also has a visibility behavior setting: playback can continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. This refers to whether the source is visible in the OBS scene, not whether the OBS application window is open.

Set up a repeating episode or playlist in OBS

  1. Choose the source type. In the intended scene, add Media Source for one episode, or VLC Video for a sequence of episodes.
  2. Configure playback. For Media Source, enable Loop. For VLC Video, add the episode files to the playlist and check Loop Playlist.
  3. Set scene visibility behavior. If using VLC Video, choose whether it should continue, pause, or stop when the source is hidden. Test any scene changes that will occur during the show. For Media Source, review its restart-on-activation and close-when-inactive controls if scene switching matters.
  4. Rehearse the actual media. Play the episode or full playlist in the OBS version and operating system you will use. Confirm audio, video, transitions, looping, and hidden-source behavior. The documented feature descriptions do not establish playback reliability for every file or setup.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then configure OBS’s streaming connection with them. Keep the key private. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends testing with representative audio and video and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
  6. Check the broadcast before relying on it. Review the preview and stream-health messages in the Live Control Room. If you plan to change a VLC playlist while live, rehearse that exact action on a private or unlisted stream first; the documented playlist features do not establish that live edits always preserve uninterrupted playback.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for the stream

YouTube’s recommended encoder settings depend on the codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload bitrate. Use the settings for your intended codec and resolution in YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, rather than copying a preset intended for another format.

  • Set the keyframe interval to YouTube’s recommended 2 seconds; its guidance says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Use a bitrate appropriate to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, and confirm that your upload connection can sustain it.
  • Test with the same kind of audio and video you will broadcast, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test is running.

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That policy does not guarantee an archive for streams longer than 12 hours.

Copyright and monetization: looping is not the whole policy question

Only stream podcast audio and video for which you have the necessary rights. These source settings do not determine whether you are authorized to use an episode.

YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025 to clarify its treatment of repetitive or mass-produced content under the “inauthentic content” policy, says monetized content should offer materially varied substance and creative, educational, or other viewer value. This is a monetization consideration—not a documented technical ban on using OBS’s Loop or Loop Playlist controls. A channel’s eligibility depends on its content and YouTube’s policy assessment, not merely on which OBS source plays it.

Troubleshoot common playback and live-stream problems

  • The episode stops instead of repeating: confirm that Loop is enabled on Media Source. If using VLC Video, check Loop Playlist and make sure the playlist contains the intended media.
  • VLC Video is unavailable or does not load: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • Playback stops after a scene change: inspect VLC Video’s visibility behavior and test with the source hidden and shown. For Media Source, review restart-on-activation and close-when-inactive behavior.
  • The stream does not reach YouTube: check that OBS is configured with the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room, then review YouTube’s preview, health status, and messages. Playback working locally does not prove the encoder connection is working.
  • The stream health is poor: compare the OBS codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance for that format. Test representative media and monitor health during the test.
  • A live playlist edit may interrupt playback: uninterrupted behavior for edits during an active broadcast is not established by the source documentation. Test the exact change on a private or unlisted stream before using it on a public broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded podcast episodes playing on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
