Usually, the 12-hour mark is not a YouTube rule that automatically ends your livestream. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives, and viewer DVR features such as rewind may be limited or unavailable. Those are replay limitations, not a stated broadcast cutoff. If the live feed itself stopped, check its status in YouTube Live Control Room and your streaming setup.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance actually means
- Archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That warning concerns whether a replay is saved, not whether the broadcast is ended. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
- DVR: Viewers may be unable to rewind or pause as usual on a very long livestream. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This is a playback limitation, not a stated cutoff for the live encoder connection. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams.
So, if your stream appears to stop at 12 hours, first distinguish a stopped broadcast from a missing replay or disabled rewind. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal 12-hour live-duration limit or diagnose why a particular broadcast ended.
Work out what ended
- Check whether the live broadcast is still active. Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream status. If viewers can still watch the live feed, the broadcast did not end; the issue may be archive availability or DVR behavior.
- Check the replay separately. If the live session finished but no replay appeared, the archive warning may explain the missing recording: YouTube says a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all.
- If the feed really stopped, inspect the streaming setup. Check the encoder or streaming software and the stream status shown in Live Control Room. The 12-hour archive and DVR statements do not identify the cause of a particular live-feed interruption.
Protect the recording of a long music stream
If you need a complete copy, keep an independent local recording and verify that it is actually being saved. YouTube specifically recommends a local archive backup because an extended livestream may not be captured as a YouTube replay. A local recording protects the file; it does not make YouTube keep the broadcast live.
For continuous music, confirm separately that you have the necessary rights for both livestreaming and any resulting archive. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for obtaining the necessary rights, including music rights, on the content provider; they do not say that a rights issue caused a particular 12-hour stop.
