For a simple 24/7 fireplace stream, make one OBS scene, add your local fireplace recording as a Media Source, enable Loop, and fit it to the canvas. A practical starting output is 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and 14 Mbps video bitrate—then test that bitrate against your sustained upload and encoder capacity before going public.

Build a minimal fireplace scene

Loop one video with Media Source

  1. In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast and add a Media Source.
  2. Select the local fireplace video and enable Loop in the source properties.
  3. Fit the source to the canvas, then inspect the preview for cropped flames, borders, or stretched proportions. OBS lets you position, size, and crop sources; adjust the source rather than accepting a distorted image. OBS sources guide

For a single recording, a Media Source keeps the scene straightforward. If the stream needs multiple clips, use a VLC Video source and verify playlist order and loop behavior. VLC must be installed for that source type to appear in OBS. OBS documents Loop Playlist as enabled by default. OBS media sources

Keep the picture and audio intentional

Remove sources you do not need, such as test overlays or unintended desktop audio. Listen to the recording near its loop boundary for a sudden gap, click, or volume change; check OBS audio meters so only intended audio is active. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. The appropriate fireplace mix depends on the recording, so check it by listening rather than assuming a particular setting fits every file. YouTube live encoder settings

Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings

Setting Starting point What to consider
Canvas and output 1920 × 1080 Set the canvas and output to your intended stream dimensions, then confirm the source fills the frame without distortion.
Frame rate 30 fps A low-motion fireplace scene is a reasonable fit for 30 fps. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding; use it only if the source benefits from smoother motion and your system sustains it. This is a practical recommendation, not a YouTube requirement. OBS Studio overview
Video encoder H.264 H.264 is a broadly documented RTMP/RTMPS starting point. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 compatibility, but availability depends on your machine and ingest setup. YouTube live encoder settings
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends CBR for the listed encoder configurations. Choose a rate your connection and encoder can maintain.
Video bitrate 14 Mbps at 1080p30 YouTube Help lists 14 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30. For 1080p60, its listed H.264 recommendation is 17 Mbps. These are platform targets, not guarantees that your network can sustain them. The YouTube page was accessed in 2026; its publication date is not stated.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio bitrate 128 Kbps stereo YouTube lists this as its recommended stereo audio bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS. The YouTube figures above were accessed in 2026; the page’s publication date is not stated.

Set the available encoder options in OBS under Settings → Output and the stream dimensions and frame rate under Settings → Video. Exact encoder controls can vary with the encoder you select and OBS version; use the settings available on your system and verify the resulting stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Its general guidance is to choose a quality your connection can sustain, rather than treating a table value as a guaranteed fit. YouTube live encoder settings

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Configure the YouTube connection and recovery

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key using the available option. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel.
  2. Use RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends. Run an upload speed test and compare the stable upload result with the stream’s total bitrate, leaving headroom for network variation and other household traffic.
  3. In OBS, confirm Automatically Reconnect is enabled in the advanced settings. Choose a retry behavior suited to your system and connection; there is no single retry value established for every setup. OBS Studio overview

OBS’s dropped-frame indicator helps diagnose whether the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. If dropped frames increase, lower the bitrate or output demands and test again. An encoder overload is a separate possibility: if frames are missed while the network is stable, reduce frame rate or resolution, or use a less demanding encoder preset available on your system. OBS Studio overview

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Run a private or otherwise non-public test using the same video movement and sound planned for the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing representative motion and audio.
  2. While it is live, check YouTube Studio’s stream health and any displayed messages. Confirm the image is framed correctly and the audio remains audible without clipping or unintended sound.
  3. Watch the OBS preview and dropped-frame indicator. If frames drop or the encoder struggles, lower the output demands until the test is stable.
  4. Let the recording pass through its loop boundary during the test. Confirm the picture and sound restart cleanly and that no other audio source becomes active.
  5. For a continuous DIY broadcast, keep the computer, OBS, local source file, and network available. This is an operational requirement implied by running OBS continuously, not an uptime guarantee.

Copyright, reused content, and long-running broadcasts

Use a fireplace recording and audio you own or are licensed to broadcast. A relaxing visual does not make music, sound effects, or footage free to use. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting, and do not assume a live stream is exempt from rights claims. Repeating a recording can also affect how distinctive and valuable a channel’s overall programming appears; YouTube’s monetization review is separate from whether OBS can technically loop a file. Check current YouTube policies rather than promising monetization or an archived replay for a stream running 24 hours or longer: archive behavior for broadcasts of that duration is not established here.

Common problems and fixes

  • The Media Source stops at the end: Reopen its properties and confirm Loop is enabled. If it is a playlist, confirm it is a VLC Video source, VLC is installed, and the playlist loop behavior is correct.
  • The video is cropped, has borders, or looks stretched: Fit and position the source against the canvas, then check the preview. Confirm canvas and output dimensions match the intended stream format.
  • Dropped frames rise: The upload connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Test upload capacity, reduce bitrate or output demands, and monitor stream health again.
  • OBS misses frames but the connection appears stable: The encoder or system may be overloaded. Try 30 rather than 60 fps, reduce resolution, or select a less demanding encoder setting, then repeat the test.
  • Audio is silent, clipped, or changes at the loop point: Check the Media Source audio, OBS meters, and active audio sources. Listen to the source file at the boundary and adjust or replace it if the recording itself has a gap or spike.
  • The stream disconnects: Check OBS automatic reconnect, the network, and YouTube’s stream health messages. Reconnect settings can help retry a dropped connection but cannot ensure uninterrupted service.

FAQ

Should I use VLC Video for one fireplace recording?

Usually not: a single Media Source with Loop is the simpler setup. Use VLC Video when you need a playlist, and install VLC first.
