To run a changing music playlist as a 24/7 YouTube radio stream, shuffle tracks you have the right to livestream, route the audio into a continuously running encoder such as OBS, add a visual, and send the resulting live video to YouTube. The playlist handles track selection; the encoder and YouTube handle the broadcast. For an always-on channel, the playback system, encoder, and internet connection must stay available—or you can use a cloud service such as StreamNeo to keep uploaded videos playing without leaving a computer on.
Choose the playback and streaming setup
A YouTube radio stream is a live video broadcast with your playlist audio and a visual scene. You need a playback method that can shuffle your cleared tracks, an encoder that combines the audio and visual and sends the feed to YouTube, and an environment that can keep running continuously.

Clear the music rights before building the playlist
Use music you own or have permission to use for the specific purpose of livestreaming on YouTube. A consumer music subscription should not be treated as broadcast permission. Keep copies of licenses or written permissions and check whether the rights owner requires your channel to be allowlisted in Content ID.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects protected content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Licensed music can still trigger an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. YouTube for Artists advises creators planning to use protected music to coordinate with their label or distributor. A license and a Content ID allowlist are related but separate checks.
If you archive the broadcast, the archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after it ends. Review YouTube’s current guidance on copyright issues with live streams and YouTube for Artists’ live-stream guidance before launch.

Prepare a shuffled rotation that behaves well on air
Organize the cleared tracks
Put only tracks cleared for this use into a dedicated playlist or folder. Use a playback method that can shuffle that collection, then confirm it can move from one track to the next without requiring a person to intervene. Do not assume that “shuffle” means every song will play once before any repeats: unless your player documents a no-repeat cycle, track repeats may happen before the full library has played.
Check track transitions and the length of the library
Listen through the complete playback route, not just the source player. Check for silent gaps, abrupt cutoffs, unexpectedly quiet tracks, and transitions that leave the live scene silent. A larger rotation gives listeners more variety, but it does not change the rights requirements for any track in it.

Build the broadcast in OBS and connect YouTube
- Prepare a visual scene. Add a static image or visual loop suitable for the channel. The broadcast still needs a video picture even when the program is music.
- Route playlist audio into OBS. Configure the playback source so its sound reaches the encoder. Monitor the audio meter and listen to the output to confirm that the stream will carry the music, not just the computer’s local playback.
- Configure OBS for YouTube Live. Connect OBS to the intended YouTube live broadcast using the current stream setup instructions. Treat the stream key as a credential: use the key for the correct broadcast, do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Set and verify encoding settings. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then check the current OBS and YouTube guidance for settings appropriate to your upload connection and chosen output. There is no single bitrate or resolution established here for every channel and connection. A bitrate your connection cannot sustain can cause dropped frames.
- Start with a private test. Check that the live preview shows the intended visual, the audio is audible and balanced, the playlist advances, and YouTube reports a healthy stream. YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test, especially for high-production or high-investment streams.
For setup and connection indicators, consult the OBS Project Help Portal. OBS says a rising dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection indicator can point to an unstable connection or one unable to sustain the selected bitrate; OBS drops frames to avoid buffering. Its help resources include connection troubleshooting and the Auto-Configuration Wizard.
Enable live access and test before announcing the channel
If this is the channel’s first livestream, verify the account and enable live streaming ahead of the launch. YouTube for Artists says to enable live streams by verifying the account at least 24 hours before the planned broadcast. Interface labels can change, so follow the current YouTube for Artists instructions rather than relying on a remembered menu path.

Run an unlisted end-to-end test before promoting the radio stream. Confirm the audio, visuals, playlist transitions, YouTube live status, and what happens if the playback or encoder is interrupted. A successful test does not establish that the stream will recover automatically later; the self-hosted setup still depends on the playback system, encoder, and internet connection remaining available.

- Monitor YouTube’s live status and OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators.
- Keep the playback source and encoder running; if the computer sleeps, restarts, loses power, or loses its internet connection, the broadcast can stop.
- Have a way to notice a stopped playlist or silent output. Do not assume a playlist or encoder will restart itself unless your chosen setup explicitly supports that behavior and you have tested it.
- Check the channel’s audience setting. If a stream is marked made for kids, YouTube lists live chat, chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, reminders, and personalized ads among the affected features. See YouTube’s guidance on restrictions for live streaming.
