Keep lossless music files as your source or local archive, but send YouTube a compatible AAC or MP3 feed; YouTube then transcodes the stream for playback. For a 24/7 music channel, compatible settings are only part of the job: you also need music rights, a Content ID plan, and a way to manage stream endings and restarts.
What “lossless” means for a YouTube live radio channel
A lossless file such as WAV, FLAC, or ALAC can preserve audio in your production library, but that does not make the live broadcast to viewers lossless. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS ingest supports AAC or MP3 audio, and YouTube transcodes a live stream into multiple playback formats. The source file, the encoded feed sent to YouTube, and the versions YouTube delivers to viewers are separate stages. YouTube’s encoder guidance and its Live Streaming API documentation describe the ingest constraints.
The practical approach is to preserve a lossless master if it matters to your workflow, then encode a supported live feed. Avoid advertising the YouTube broadcast itself as lossless: the documented live path does not provide lossless listener delivery.
Choose the ingest path and configure audio
Most creators send a stream from an encoder to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Use the settings for the ingest protocol you actually select; do not assume one protocol’s requirements apply to another.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Ingest path | Documented audio support | Relevant settings or constraint |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | AAC or MP3 | YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio. RTMPS is the recommended secure protocol. These are ingest recommendations, not a promise of lossless playback. |
| HLS | AAC | Use one audio track and follow the HLS-specific requirements; do not assume RTMP/RTMPS settings carry over. |
For protocol-specific detail, consult YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings and HLS ingest guide. The documented support does not establish FLAC, ALAC, or WAV as live-ingest audio settings.
Set up a DIY 24/7 stream
- Prepare your source and playlist. Organize music you have permission to use, check that the files play cleanly from start to finish, and decide how the playlist will loop or rotate. Keep original lossless files or make a separate local lossless recording if you need an archive; that is distinct from the encoded stream sent to YouTube. OBS documents lossless audio in the context of local recording, not as a way around YouTube’s live-ingest requirements: see its Audio/Video Formats Guide.
- Choose an encoder and protocol. Configure your encoder for RTMPS where supported, or use HLS if your workflow requires it. Set the audio codec and parameters to match the corresponding YouTube guidance above. For RTMP/RTMPS, begin with AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo.
- Connect the encoder in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go live, and use the Live Control Room’s encoder setup. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: don’t share or publish it, and reset it if exposed.
- Test the whole chain before announcing the station. Start a private or otherwise limited test, check YouTube’s stream status and health, listen for gaps or distortion, and confirm that the playlist restarts as expected. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Fix codec, audio-track, or connection warnings before relying on the stream.
- Plan the operating cycle. Decide who or what monitors the broadcast, how you will handle an encoder or network failure, and how streams will end and restart. A 24/7 schedule should not be treated as a guarantee that a single YouTube broadcast will run or archive indefinitely.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
You need rights for the actual use: a continuous or recurring live stream on YouTube, in the relevant territories, under the terms of the licence. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights, including relevant music permissions from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Buying a track or using a consumer music subscription does not, by itself, establish permission to rebroadcast it as a 24/7 channel. Nor should you assume a generic “royalty-free” label covers this use. Confirm the scope directly with the rights holder or licensing provider.

Check Content ID allowlisting
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Even when you have a licence, a stream can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Before launch, ask the rights owner whether the music is covered for live streaming and whether your channel must be allowlisted. Keep the licence and any allowlist confirmation with your channel records. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Manage endings, restarts, and archives
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted, all-day broadcast will create a single complete archive, or that YouTube guarantees a continuous 24/7 operating method. For an around-the-clock station, design a practical stream lifecycle: monitor the feed, decide when to end and restart broadcasts, and make a recovery plan for interruptions. The precise schedule and automation depend on your encoder and channel setup; YouTube’s documented guidance does not establish a universal restart interval or guaranteed uninterrupted architecture.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports an unsupported audio codec: Check that the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, or AAC for HLS. A lossless source file does not mean the live encoder should send a lossless codec.
- The stream has no audio or the audio setup is rejected: Confirm that an audio track is present. For HLS, use one audio track. For RTMP/RTMPS stereo, check the sample rate and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations.
- The live stream is interrupted over music: Pause or end the broadcast and resolve the rights issue. Check the relevant licence and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; a licence alone may not prevent automated interruption.
- The broadcast stops or fails to restart: Check the encoder’s connection, stream status in Live Control Room, and your restart procedure. A 24/7 channel requires monitoring and recovery planning; no single universal restart recipe is established by YouTube’s published guidance.
- You expected a complete 24-hour archive: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Plan separate broadcasts and local recordings if you need a dependable full-length archive.
- Viewers report a different sound from your local master: That is consistent with a platform ingest and transcoding workflow. Compare the local source and encoder output to diagnose your own chain, but do not describe YouTube playback as lossless.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded music rotation, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo does not clear music rights for you, so confirm your permissions and Content ID arrangements before streaming.
