You can run a 24/7 video game soundtrack channel on YouTube with an encoder such as OBS, but rights clearance—not the streaming setup—is the first requirement. Get written permission for every recording, composition and visual asset, and ask the relevant owners to add your channel to their Content ID allowlists. Then create an encoder broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, test it as unlisted, and plan for outages and YouTube’s limits on long-stream archives.
1. Clear the music and artwork before you stream
Make a track-by-track inventory of the recordings and compositions you plan to play. Identify the owners or administrators and obtain written permission that expressly covers continuous, music-only live streaming on YouTube. A permission to use gameplay footage or to stream while playing a game does not automatically grant the right to rebroadcast its soundtrack as a 24/7 radio channel.
Confirm the full scope of each permission
- Use and term: Confirm that continuous live streaming is allowed, for how long, and whether the permission can be withdrawn.
- Territory and monetization: Check whether worldwide availability and monetization are permitted.
- Visuals: Cover the cover art, static image, animation or visualizer you will show. Permission for a track does not necessarily cover its artwork.
- Replay: Ask whether YouTube’s archived video (VOD) may remain available. A live-stream license may not include replay rights.
- Content ID: Ask each relevant owner or distributor to allowlist your YouTube channel before the test. YouTube warns that a live stream can be interrupted even when the creator has a license if the channel is not on the owner’s allowlist: YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
Keep the written permissions and rights-holder contact details accessible. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content and may show a placeholder, interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects material. A game publisher’s general fan-content policy also may not cover every soundtrack component: a game can include music licensed from outside artists. Check the rules for the exact game and tracks. YouTube’s Content ID reference policy describes when publishers can submit original game soundtracks as references; it is not a license for a third-party radio channel: YouTube Content ID reference policy.
2. Enable YouTube live streaming and create the broadcast
Verify the channel and enable live streaming before launch. YouTube for Artists advises first-time streamers to verify at least 24 hours ahead, so leave time for setup rather than waiting until broadcast day. See YouTube for Artists’ live-stream guidance.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule a broadcast and choose the encoder option.
- Set the broadcast title, description, visibility, category, thumbnail and audience declaration. Use only text and images you have permission to publish.
- Copy the stream URL or select YouTube RTMPS, then copy the stream key shown for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not post it, include it in a screenshot or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast on the channel.

3. Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube
OBS Studio is free software; the core setup does not require a paid encoder or dedicated streaming hardware. Install OBS from the OBS Project, then prepare a scene using only cleared material.

- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube or YouTube RTMPS, or connect your YouTube account if that option is available.
- If entering credentials manually, paste in the server URL and stream key supplied by Live Control Room. Avoid displaying the key while capturing setup footage or sharing screenshots.
- Add the audio source that will play your cleared playlist and the permitted visual: for example, a still image or visualizer. Check that no desktop audio, notifications or other unlicensed sound is being captured.
- Set the output and video options to match what your connection and computer can sustain. Use a stable wired connection if available, and test for dropped frames and audio interruptions rather than assuming the settings will hold continuously.
- Start streaming from OBS and check the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. Choose hardware only if your existing production needs call for it; no particular computer, capture card, audio interface or hardware encoder is required by this workflow.
4. Run an unlisted test before launch
Set visibility to Unlisted for a test broadcast. YouTube for Artists recommends an unlisted test before a high-production or high-investment stream. Let it run long enough to check track transitions and the behavior you expect from the continuous setup.

- Listen on the stream itself for clipping, gaps, unexpected desktop audio and uneven transitions.
- Check the visual on the intended viewing devices and confirm the title, description and audience settings.
- Watch Live Control Room for stream-health warnings and OBS for dropped frames or a lost connection.
- Confirm the Content ID allowlisting and permissions are in place; an unlisted test is still a live broadcast and is not a substitute for clearance.
- Practice stopping and restarting the encoder so whoever is responsible knows how to respond to a disconnect.
Do not announce the channel as continuous until the test has verified both the content and the recovery process.
5. Plan for uptime, reconnects and monitoring
“24/7” is an operating target, not a guarantee that one encoder and network connection will never fail. Decide who or what will detect a problem and how the stream will be restarted. Keep the encoder machine and network stable, document the recovery steps, and make sure someone can act if monitoring detects an outage.

The OBS community guide describes disabling scheduled-stream auto-stop as one way to allow a broadcast to reconnect after a disconnect, while also noting that YouTube may eventually end a broadcast after no content has been sent for multiple hours. Treat this as behavior to verify in your own test channel—not a permanent platform guarantee—and consult the current OBS guide to streaming to YouTube.

Do not rely on one uninterrupted YouTube live broadcast to create a complete replay. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable after 12 hours. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams and YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.

- If a complete archive matters, make a local recording and confirm that you have enough storage and the rights to retain and publish it.
- If reliable replay or rewind is important to viewers, consider a schedule made of shorter sessions rather than one continuous stream. This creates more manageable broadcasts, but requires planned restarts and clear communication about which session is current.
- Test the archive and rewind behavior with your intended format before promising either feature.
