For a looping 1080p YouTube Live stream, set OBS output to 1920×1080, start at 30 fps, use CBR, and set keyframes to 2 seconds. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5–14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6–17 Mbps at 1080p60. Choose 60 fps only when smoother motion matters and your computer and upload connection can sustain it; test the complete setup before relying on a long-running stream.
Recommended OBS settings for a 1080p YouTube loop
These settings describe the video OBS sends to YouTube (the ingest), not a guarantee that every viewer receives an identical 1080p rendition. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.
| Setting | Recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Base (Canvas) Resolution | Match the canvas to the video and scene layout. For a 1080p source filling the frame, use 1920×1080. | OBS distinguishes the working canvas from the output resolution; matching them avoids unintended scaling. See OBS’s overview. |
| Output (Scaled) Resolution | 1920×1080 | This sets the intended 1080p ingest size. |
| Common FPS Values | 30 fps to start; 60 fps if smoother motion is important and the system can sustain it. | OBS cautions that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps. |
| Video bitrate, H.264 | 1080p30: 5–14 Mbps; 1080p60: 6–17 Mbps | These are YouTube’s recommended ranges, not a guarantee of stable delivery. |
| Video bitrate, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p30: 4–10 Mbps; 1080p60: 4–12 Mbps | YouTube lists these ranges; confirm that the encoder and ingest setup you use support the codec. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) | YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency. Consistent timing also supports smoother quality transitions. |
| Protocol | RTMPS where available | YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; 128 kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz is YouTube’s recommendation. | Use the same audio format and sample rate consistently through the loop. |
| Encoder | Use a supported hardware encoder if it runs stably; otherwise choose a software preset your CPU can sustain. | Encoder support varies by computer and generation. OBS’s hardware encoding guide explains the trade-offs. |
YouTube’s current live encoder settings page supplies the bitrate, keyframe, protocol, and audio recommendations above: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The figures are platform recommendations. Your sustainable bitrate depends on the stability of your upload connection and encoder.
Choose 30 or 60 fps
Use 30 fps for mostly still or slow-moving loops
Static artwork, ambient backgrounds, and slow footage usually do not benefit much from doubling the frame rate. Thirty fps is a sensible starting point for a long-running loop because it asks less of the encoder than 60 fps.

Use 60 fps when motion benefits from it
Fast gameplay, scrolling text, or other visibly moving content can look smoother at 60 fps. Select it only if your computer can encode continuously and your connection can sustain the corresponding bitrate. If a representative test is unstable, return to 30 fps rather than assuming the top of YouTube’s recommended range is best.
Set up the loop and save a recoverable OBS profile
- Set the video dimensions and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to match the scene or source and set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the motion and sustained capacity described above.
- Configure streaming output. Open Settings > Output and configure the streaming encoder. Set rate control to CBR, enter the bitrate appropriate to your codec and frame rate, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS layout and available encoder controls can vary by version and encoder.
- Set audio and ingest. In the streaming audio settings, use AAC or MP3 with YouTube’s recommended 128 kbps stereo and 44.1 kHz sampling. Prefer RTMPS where available. Connect OBS to the YouTube stream using the stream key from YouTube Studio; keep the key private.
- Add the prerecorded video as a source. Add the video file as a media source in your scene and enable its repeat/loop option in that source’s properties. The exact label or placement can differ by OBS version, so check the installed version’s source properties rather than relying on a version-specific menu path.
- Save the configuration. Use Profile > New to create a dedicated YouTube 1080p profile. OBS profiles store stream, video, and output settings, making it easier to restore the configuration.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Confirm that the file restarts without an unwanted black frame, audio gap, or interruption to the live output. Use footage with motion and audio similar to the intended stream, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS for encoding or dropped-frame warnings before leaving it running.
OBS’s official configuration guidance covers canvas, output resolution, and frame rate in its OBS Studio overview; profile behavior is described in the Profiles guide. For live broadcasts, YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Test bitrate and stream health before a long loop
Do not set bitrate solely by choosing the highest number YouTube lists. Check that your upload connection can sustain the configured video bitrate with room for audio and normal network variation. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health; OBS likewise notes that service limits and upload speed affect bitrate choice.
- Test at the same resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you plan to use.
- Keep the test long enough to reveal sustained encoder or connection trouble; a brief successful start does not establish stability for an extended broadcast.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status as well as OBS warnings. If delivery is unstable, reduce bitrate or frame rate and test again.
- Use representative audio and motion, since a static test image may not reflect the load or continuity of the actual loop.
Troubleshoot a looping 1080p stream
YouTube reports an unstable or poor connection
Likely cause: configured bitrate is too close to or above the connection’s sustained upload capacity, or the connection is fluctuating. Fix: test upload stability, reduce bitrate within YouTube’s recommended range, and check stream health again. If needed, move from 60 to 30 fps.

OBS reports encoding overload or the computer struggles
Likely cause: the selected frame rate or encoder preset exceeds the computer’s sustained capacity, or other applications are competing for resources. Fix: close unnecessary applications, try 30 fps, and compare a supported hardware encoder with a software preset the CPU can handle. Hardware encoding is an option when available, not a required purchase.
The loop shows a black frame or an audio break at restart
Likely cause: the source’s loop behavior or the media file’s ending and beginning do not join cleanly. Fix: test the source restart in a private or unlisted broadcast and inspect the file boundary. Adjust or replace the media if its final and opening frames or audio do not join acceptably.

Viewers do not all receive 1080p
Likely cause: ingest resolution is being confused with the viewer’s playback rendition. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. Confirm that OBS is sending the intended 1920×1080 output and check YouTube stream health; individual viewer playback options are not identical to the OBS ingest setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the stream key and content rights in order
A stream key lets OBS send video to your channel. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. Before looping music, gameplay, or other material, make sure you have the rights needed for the live broadcast. A successful encoder setup does not establish permission to stream copyrighted material, and repeating a video does not change that. Review YouTube’s live streaming guidance and the applicable copyright rules for your content.
