Streamlabs Desktop CPU Usage Too High During a Looping YouTube Stream: How to Fix It

Check the encoder and frame-warning type first, then test resolution and scene changes to find what is driving Streamlabs Desktop CPU use.

If Streamlabs Desktop is using too much CPU while looping a video on YouTube, first check which encoder is selected and whether the stream is reporting skipped, lagged, or dropped frames. If you are using x264, try a faster x264 preset or a compatible hardware encoder; if output is 1080p, test 1280×720. Then simplify the active scene and check whether its sources are contributing to the load. These are troubleshooting steps, not a diagnosis: the right fix depends on your hardware, settings, and stream status.

Identify what is overloaded before changing settings

CPU percentage alone does not tell you why a stream is struggling. Streamlabs separates three warning types: skipped frames usually indicate encoder overload, lagged frames indicate compositor overload and are commonly associated with GPU use, and dropped frames indicate a network problem. A CPU-heavy encoder is a reasonable first suspect when skipped frames appear, but dropped frames call for a different investigation. Streamlabs’ article on these categories was updated April 25, 2025; labels and interface details may vary by installed version.

Before making changes, note your output encoder, resolution, frame rate, CPU and GPU use, and any frame-warning counters. This gives you a baseline so you can tell whether a change helped.

Reduce encoder load

If the encoder is x264

x264 is software encoding and uses the CPU. Streamlabs explains that faster x264 presets use less CPU, generally trading some encoding efficiency for lower processor demand. Try a faster preset and compare CPU use, frame warnings, and the resulting picture. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what made a difference.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If a compatible hardware encoder is available

A hardware encoder can move video encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated encoder in a compatible GPU. Streamlabs recommends NVENC for NVIDIA GPUs. Availability and the exact encoder options depend on the installed hardware and software; do not assume a particular option is present. Compare the same stream after switching, and check both frame warnings and image quality.

Streamlabs describes the distinction this way: “The software encoder (x264) will use your CPU to encode video, while hardware encoders like NVENC utilize a dedicated encoder in the GPU, allowing you to play and stream without compromising game performance.” This is general guidance, not a guarantee that switching encoders will resolve every high-CPU problem.

Test a lower output resolution

If you are streaming at 1080p, test 1280×720 output. Streamlabs recommends 1280×720 as a performance-and-quality balance and warns that 1080p can have a significant CPU impact. Treat this as a starting point rather than a universal best setting: assess the stream’s appearance and frame warnings after the change.

Check the loop scene and its sources

A looping video still has to be presented as a scene and encoded by Streamlabs. The fact that the content is prerecorded does not, by itself, identify what is consuming CPU. Streamlabs’ project troubleshooting notes flag sources as possible contributors, including demanding animated overlays and multiple browser sources.

  • Temporarily disable animated overlays and nonessential browser sources, then compare CPU use.
  • If the change helps, re-enable sources one at a time to isolate the contributor.
  • Try Performance Mode if it is available in your version; Streamlabs describes it as a modest way to reduce CPU/GPU load.
  • Consider browser-source cache only if browser sources appear implicated. The project notes give a Windows cache location, but that community documentation may not match every current installation. Verify the location for your installed version before deleting anything.

These are checks, not proof that a particular source or cache is responsible. Keep the loop and other essential scene elements active while testing changes that matter to your broadcast.

Troubleshoot according to the warning

Skipped frames

Streamlabs says skipped frames occur when the encoder is overloaded, often with high CPU usage. Test a faster x264 preset, a compatible hardware encoder, or a lower output resolution. If the warning persists, record the encoder and settings you tested before considering equipment changes.

Lagged frames

Lagged frames point more toward compositor overload and GPU use than a CPU encoding bottleneck. Simplify the scene and test Performance Mode. A GPU-related warning is not, by itself, evidence that the CPU needs an upgrade.

Dropped frames

Dropped frames point toward network trouble. Changing the x264 preset or scene overlays does not address that category directly. Check the connection and Streamlabs’ reported status before treating high CPU as the cause.

When settings changes do not settle the issue

Performance depends on the stream content, other programs running, and the computer’s hardware. Streamlabs’ published system requirements cannot establish whether an unspecified computer is inadequate for this particular loop. Before asking for help or weighing an upgrade, gather the Streamlabs Desktop version, operating system, CPU and GPU models, encoder, output settings, scene and source list, CPU/GPU use, and whether the warning is skipped, lagged, or dropped frames. That information helps distinguish a software configuration issue from a hardware or network limitation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
