The key question is whether you want YouTube to show a live camera or repeatedly play prerecorded videos. Synology documents the first through Surveillance Station Live Broadcast. Its instructions do not establish a built-in feature for looping stored video files from a Synology NAS.

- Check the camera and NAS. Confirm that the NAS supports the required Surveillance Station package and that the IP camera works with it. Check Synology’s current compatibility resources for the exact models.
- Enable Live Broadcast. In Surveillance Station, open Application Center, enable and open Live Broadcast, then switch the service on.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup requires the encoder to receive both in its stream settings.
- Enter the stream details in Surveillance Station. In Live Broadcast’s YouTube Settings, enter the RTMP path and your stream key, select the camera, choose a stream profile, then save and start the broadcast. Synology’s documented workflow specifies H.264 video for YouTube Live.
- Check the incoming preview. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the preview. Confirm that the stream is healthy before relying on it as an always-on broadcast; for a scheduled stream, YouTube’s instructions include clicking Go live after the preview appears.
Treat the stream key like a password: use your own key from Live Control Room, never copy an example key from a manual or webpage, and replace the key if it is exposed. The URL and key may vary with the selected stream.
What to do if you want to loop prerecorded files from the NAS
Do not assume Live Broadcast can play NAS-stored videos: Synology documents it as an IP-camera integration. YouTube describes software encoders, hardware encoders, and cloud services as options for sending a stream. Its guide lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder that can schedule prerecorded media without a computer. Those options do not mean the Synology NAS itself is encoding the video.

A NAS-local DIY encoder may be possible, but the documented Synology camera workflow is not a ready-made recipe for it. Before relying on a container or other custom setup, verify it for your DSM version and NAS architecture, test that your media codecs are supported, leave sufficient CPU and memory headroom, and confirm restart and recovery behavior. Also verify whether the specific encoder supports RTMPS if you intend to use it. The cited official instructions do not validate a particular Synology Docker image, FFmpeg command, or automatic-recovery configuration, so no such setup should be treated as officially supported here.
YouTube stream settings, security, and archive limits
- Use the URL and key for the selected stream. YouTube requires an encoder to send the stream to its server URL with the matching stream key. Keep the key private and replace it if it is disclosed.
- Allow for first-time activation. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.
- Check RTMPS support in the encoder. YouTube supports RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use it only with an encoder that supports RTMPS. Synology’s cited Live Broadcast instructions refer to RTMP fields and do not confirm RTMPS support, so verify the exact package behavior rather than assuming it.
- Do not assume a long stream becomes one complete archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be saved as one complete video.
- Confirm the content is yours to stream. Use videos and audio you created or have permission to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules. A continuous loop does not grant rights to music, gameplay, or other third-party material.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Plan for compatibility and continuity
A working camera broadcast depends on the specific NAS, Surveillance Station package, camera, and stream profile. Check current Synology compatibility information for your exact hardware and software release. YouTube’s interface and encoder requirements can also change, so check the current Live Control Room instructions when setting up a stream.
For a NAS-local prerecorded loop, test more than playback: verify the media codecs, resource headroom, behavior after a network interruption or restart, and the encoder’s transport support. A continuous broadcast also has a different archive constraint from a shorter stream; YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours only.
