To keep a YouTube playlist stream running after you log out of SSH, run the encoder on your Indian Linux server inside a named tmux session, then detach from that session before closing SSH. The encoder stays alive while the server and its connections remain healthy; tmux does not restart a crashed encoder or survive a server reboot.
What logging out of SSH does—and does not—stop
Closing your SSH client ends your interactive connection. It does not have to stop a process that is still running on the server. Keep the encoder on the remote host and detach its terminal session before disconnecting.
- SSH logout: ends your connection from the laptop or desktop.
- Stopping the encoder: ends the video and audio being sent to YouTube.
- Ending the broadcast in YouTube Studio: is a separate action from closing SSH.
- Rebooting the server: ends ordinary processes and the
tmuxsession running them.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide says to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Use the current values shown in your Live Control Room, not values copied from an old tutorial: YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Run the playlist stream in tmux
1. Check the server-side inputs and playlist behavior
Make sure the encoder is installed on the Linux server and that the server account running it can read the video files and playlist. Playlist looping depends on the encoder and how its inputs are configured; there is no universal loop command that is safe to apply to every playlist. Test the exact input and confirm it repeats before leaving the stream unattended.

2. Create or select the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public post, exposed logs, or shell history that other users can read.
3. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it
Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room when supported by your encoder. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. If the encoder reports an SSL negotiation problem, check that the address starts with rtmps, verify the host against the current Live Control Room details, and consult YouTube’s guidance on using port 443: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

4. Start the encoder inside a named tmux session
On the server, create a named session, for example with tmux new -s yt-playlist, and start your already-tested encoder command inside it. The command and its playlist options depend on the encoder and input format, so use the configuration you have verified rather than copying a generic loop command.
When the encoder is running, detach from tmux with the common default shortcut Ctrl-b, then d. This leaves the remote session running. Only after detaching should you close SSH.

5. Confirm YouTube is receiving the stream
Before leaving the stream unattended, check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then follow YouTube’s scheduled-stream flow and click Go live when the preview is ready. A process visible in tmux does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving valid video and audio; check the viewer-facing stream too.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive behavior, not a guarantee that an encoder, server, or stream will remain healthy for that duration. Reconnect and inspect the running session
Log back into the same server as the same user that created the session, then run tmux attach -t yt-playlist. You can inspect the encoder output in its terminal. Detach again with Ctrl-b, then d, before ending SSH. If the named session is not found, it may have ended or the encoder may have been started under a different user.
tmux versus a service manager
tmux is the simple choice for the narrow problem of keeping a manually started process alive after SSH logout. A service manager such as systemd is a separate operational choice when you want a configured service to start on boot or restart after an exit. Neither is required by YouTube; these are Linux process-management options.

For unattended recovery, configure a service intentionally, include useful logging, and test both a process exit and a reboot. A restart policy is not a substitute for checking YouTube’s preview and stream health.

For ordinary playlist streaming, RTMPS is the straightforward encrypted RTMP option when your encoder supports it. HLS is a distinct ingestion method, not a requirement for a playlist stream. YouTube documents HLS for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, with specific ingest requirements and higher latency.

Troubleshooting: the stream stopped or is not visible
- The stream stopped when SSH closed: the encoder may have been started directly in the SSH terminal or the session may not have been detached. Start it inside a named
tmuxsession, detach usingCtrl-bthend, and verify by reconnecting and attaching. - The tmux session exists but YouTube shows no valid stream: inspect encoder output, input-file access, network connectivity, stream URL and key, and Live Control Room preview/health. A live process alone is not proof of successful ingest.
- The encoder exited:
tmuxpreserves a terminal session but does not restart a failed process. Inspect the terminal output; if automatic recovery is required, configure and test a service manager restart policy. - The server rebooted: a
tmuxsession does not persist across reboot. Configure a service manager to start the encoder on boot if that behavior is needed, and test it. - RTMPS setup reports an SSL error: verify you are using the current RTMPS URL and correct host; check YouTube’s port 443 guidance if the encoder supports specifying it.
- The playlist does not repeat: revisit the encoder’s playlist or input configuration and test its loop behavior. The correct setup depends on the specific encoder and input.
India-specific considerations
Running the VPS in India does not change the basic SSH, tmux, or stream-key workflow described here. The reviewed YouTube setup instructions do not establish a special India-only ingest requirement. Check the current URL and key in your own Live Control Room.
If custom software manages broadcasts through the YouTube Live Streaming API rather than simply sending an encoder feed, Google requires OAuth 2.0 for user data; service-account authentication is not supported for this API, and the channel must be approved for Live.
