Church Sermon Streaming: Hosted Services vs a Self-Hosted VPS

Hosted platforms bundle different streaming features; a VPS offers control but makes the church responsible for setup, delivery, bandwidth and upkeep.

For most churches without a dedicated streaming operator, a hosted church platform is the simpler place to start: it can bundle delivery, a viewer player, an archive and support. A self-hosted VPS can offer more control over ingest and routing, but the church must configure and maintain the server and plan for outgoing bandwidth. Compare what each option actually delivers—not just its monthly headline price.

What you are choosing between

A hosted church streaming service packages some combination of ingest, viewer delivery, a website player, sermon archive, social simulcasting and support. The exact bundle depends on the provider and plan. A VPS relay is infrastructure the church operates: it can receive a stream and relay it, but a basic RTMP setup is not automatically a browser-ready viewing service or sermon library. Consideration Hosted church platform Self-hosted VPS relay
Setup and operation The provider packages the service; setup and support depend on the plan. The church provisions and configures the server and streaming software, then maintains them.
Delivery cost Compare subscription, storage or bandwidth/viewer-hour allowance, and any overages. Budget for the server and egress based on stream bitrate and concurrent viewers.
Archive and replay Some plans advertise archive or on-demand storage; limits vary. Recording and archive require additional system choices; a basic relay does not establish a sermon library.
Viewer playback A plan may include a website player, adaptive bitrate or OTT options. The church must arrange a viewer format and delivery path; RTMP ingest alone is not a complete viewer-facing product.
Destinations Some services offer website embedding and social simulcasting, with plan limits. Relaying to destinations is possible to configure, but the church manages routing and credentials.
Support and recovery Check the vendor’s support and service terms. The church team or a separately hired operator diagnoses failures and restores service.
Control Convenient bundled features, subject to provider terms and product design. More direct control of server configuration and routing, with the related operational work.

How to compare the real cost

Streaming cost depends on what is included and how many people watch. Hosted providers may meter storage, bandwidth or viewer-hours; a VPS’s outbound data grows with bitrate, event duration and concurrent viewers. A low server rental price is not comparable to a hosted plan that also includes delivery, a player, storage and support.

Sermon.net Enterprise $154/month month-to-month; $140/month with annual commitment 750 GB usage allotment.
BoxCast Standard From $109/month billed annually, or $119/month billed monthly BoxCast says streaming plans include at least 10,000 viewer-hours a month; its page describes this as a minimum allowance and says there is no viewer-count limit. Check the plan terms.

Sermon.net says storage accumulates while bandwidth resets monthly; its usage guide estimates a one-hour video at 1,500 Kbps as 0.64 GB and at 3,000 Kbps as 1.29 GB. These are the provider’s examples, not a universal conversion for every encoding or delivery setup. See its usage calculation examples and plan details.

For scale, CubePath’s January 11, 2026 tutorial uses a non-transcoding example of at least 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM, and estimates that a 3 Mbps stream watched by 50 people needs about 150 Mbps. Those are tutorial-specific illustrations, not production sizing guarantees or a hosting quote. Estimate peak concurrent viewers, bitrate, service duration and regional egress charges for your own case. Read the CubePath tutorial.

What self-hosting requires

The OBS Project’s private-hosting guide outlines a dedicated Debian server, nginx compiled with nginx-rtmp-module, RTMP configuration, and a custom server URL and stream key in OBS. The guide is intentionally high-level and points to separate module setup references; its stated Debian version is old, so treat the design as illustrative and use current operating-system and software documentation for implementation. A basic relay may also need a viewer delivery format such as HLS, a player, recording and archive storage, monitoring, security controls and a documented recovery process. An older OBS forum tutorial describes the relationship between outgoing bandwidth, stream size, and uploading and downloading connections; its 2014 commands and software assumptions are dated, so use it only for that general planning concept. OBS forum tutorial, March 25, 2014

Operational checklist before you choose a VPS

  • Estimate typical and peak concurrent viewers, stream bitrate, and weekly event length.
  • Price server capacity and outbound traffic against those peaks, including regional egress rates.
  • Decide how viewers will watch and whether you need adaptive bitrate, a website player, or social destinations.
  • Specify where recordings will be stored, how long they will be retained, and how replay will be presented.
  • Assign responsibility for installation, updates, monitoring, stream-key security, backups and failure recovery.

Choose based on your church’s constraints

Start with hosted if volunteer time is limited

Compare the total plan cost with its player, archive, destinations, viewing allowance and support. Confirm that the plan includes the features your congregation actually needs, rather than assuming every advertised feature is available at every tier.

Consider a VPS when you have an operator and a specific reason

A technically capable team may value control over ingest or routing. Evaluate the full delivery path and operating responsibilities, not merely whether the server can accept an RTMP feed.

Use a distribution service only if it covers the delivery you need

If the main requirement is sending a service to social platforms, a multistreaming service may fit. Check separately for a church website player, archive, playback and viewer delivery.

Answer these questions before comparing plans

  • How many people typically watch, and what is the likely peak?
  • How long is each stream, and how often does the church broadcast?
  • How long should recordings remain available?
  • What resolution and bitrate will you send?
  • Which destinations and playback options are required?
  • Who will operate the system and respond if a stream fails?

Or let it run in the cloud

For a separate use case—keeping pre-recorded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream—StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; the stream can recover automatically if YouTube drops it. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is a YouTube-only service for uploaded-video playout, not a camera-based church production or a substitute for a church platform’s viewer delivery, archive or social simulcasting.
