How to Make a Low-End PC Run Streamlabs Desktop for Nonstop YouTube Streaming

Tune Streamlabs Desktop for a low-end PC by reducing output workload, matching encoder and bitrate to your hardware and connection, and testing the full stream before relying on it.

You can make Streamlabs Desktop less demanding on an older PC by lowering the stream’s output resolution and frame rate, choosing an encoder that matches your available hardware, and keeping scenes and background tasks lean. But no settings can guarantee nonstop operation on every low-end computer: first identify whether you are streaming live gameplay or a camera, or looping prerecorded video, then test the entire setup under realistic conditions.

First decide what “nonstop” means for your stream

Streamlabs Desktop is the desktop-production path for live gameplay, a camera, or a show assembled from sources on your PC. Its workload depends on what the computer must capture, compose, encode, and send to YouTube. A continuous stream therefore requires more than choosing a bitrate: the PC, connection, power, cooling, and production setup all have to remain workable.

If your channel only needs to loop prerecorded videos, a desktop encoder may be unnecessary. YouTube’s verified encoder list describes Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded video streams without a dedicated PC. That is a different workflow from live gameplay or camera production; it does not turn Streamlabs Desktop into a cloud service. YouTube’s encoder setup page also lists OBS Studio as free, open-source recording and streaming software, but the page does not establish that another desktop encoder will use fewer resources on your particular computer.

Check whether the PC is a plausible fit

Before changing settings, note your operating system, RAM, CPU, graphics hardware, stream content, and what else will run while you broadcast. Streamlabs’ official minimum guidance is inconsistent across its current pages, so treat it as a compatibility reference—not a promise of nonstop performance. The system requirements page, dated April 25, 2025 and marked updated April 8, 2026, lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and 8 GB RAM as minimums. The July 2026 getting-started guide lists Windows 11 or macOS 12 and integrated graphics as minimum graphics detail. Check the current installer and documentation for your operating system before relying on either page.

The requirements page’s recommended list is substantially higher: 16 GB or more RAM, a 512 GB SSD or larger, Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or higher or AMD Ryzen 5000 series or higher, and NVIDIA RTX 20/30 or AMD RX 5000/6000 series graphics. Those are Streamlabs’ listed recommendations, not a rule that every stream needs a hardware upgrade. Streamlabs notes that more demanding content and concurrent applications can require settings adjustments. Diagnose the actual bottleneck before buying parts.

Lower the video workload before changing hardware

Set an output your PC can sustain

In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Video. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at your monitor’s native resolution, then lower Output (Scaled) Resolution to the size you intend to send to YouTube. Streamlabs explains that output resolution affects performance: rendering and streaming at 1080p is a heavier workload than 720p. Its getting-started guide describes 720p as a good balance; it is a sensible starting point for a struggling PC, not a guarantee that every machine will handle it.

If performance or upload stability remains poor, test a lower frame rate such as 30 fps. A 60 fps stream asks the PC to produce more frames and may also require more upload bandwidth, depending on the chosen resolution and encoder settings. Judge the result using your actual scene and workload rather than selecting the largest resolution or frame rate by default.

Choose an encoder according to available hardware

Streamlabs distinguishes x264, which encodes using the CPU, from NVENC, which uses a dedicated NVIDIA GPU encoder. Streamlabs recommends NVENC New when an NVIDIA graphics card is available. Use that as a starting point, then watch both CPU and GPU load during a representative test. Moving encoding to the GPU may not help if the GPU is already the component under strain.

There is no universally best encoder for every low-end PC: compare CPU use, GPU availability and load, and the actual stream result. If the chosen encoder causes dropped or skipped frames, try the other viable option only if the hardware supports it, and retest the same scene and settings.

Simplify scenes and close unnecessary work

Streamlabs says resource needs vary with the content, other running programs, hardware, animated overlays, and advanced plugins. Remove sources and animations you do not need and close applications that are not part of the show. These are practical ways to reduce competing work, but the improvement will depend on what was consuming resources on your PC.

Set YouTube bitrate and keyframes to match the output

For H.264, YouTube’s current encoder-settings table recommends the following bitrates. They are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of what a particular PC or internet connection can sustain.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps

In Streamlabs’ output settings, set the encoder to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, in line with YouTube’s published recommendations. YouTube also publishes minimums and settings for other codecs; consult its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the current values and the codec you use. Do not raise bitrate simply to chase a higher-quality label: it must fit both your connection and the selected output.

Check upload capacity and connection stability

Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube says the stream bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth available to the stream, recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom, and warns that a shared high-speed connection may still limit an individual stream. A speed test is a snapshot; conditions can change while other devices or applications use the connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its connection guidance.

Use wired Ethernet if it is practical, especially if Wi-Fi is unreliable; Streamlabs recommends a wired connection. Ethernet can provide a more stable link between the PC and router, but it does not increase the speed of your internet plan or reduce the PC’s encoding workload. If YouTube’s stream-health display reports network problems, test a lower bitrate or improve connection stability before increasing the output quality.

Test the complete stream before relying on it

  1. Recreate the real show. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, audio sources, overlays, motion, and typical background workload. A static desktop test may not reveal trouble that appears during gameplay or a more complex scene.
  2. Check both sides of the stream. Watch Streamlabs’ resource use and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. If frames are skipped, reduce the rendering or encoding workload, starting with output resolution, frame rate, or unnecessary scene elements. If YouTube reports network issues, lower bitrate or address connection stability. The exact cause still depends on the displayed status and logs.
  3. Run a representative long test. Let the setup operate long enough to expose problems that may not appear in a brief check. Confirm the PC’s power and sleep settings will not interrupt the stream, provide reasonable cooling and ventilation, and decide how you will recover if the PC or connection stops.
  4. Check the channel and any local recording. Confirm you are streaming to the intended YouTube channel and that the stream is accessible as intended. If you are recording an archive locally, confirm the file is growing and can be played back rather than assuming a recording is intact.

YouTube’s preparation advice is to set up at least two hours ahead, start the encoder at least 15 minutes early, check the preview, verify accessibility, check archive growth and integrity when recording, and monitor audio and video continuously. Those checks help catch problems; they do not guarantee that a particular computer can stay live indefinitely. Review YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder setup guidance before a long broadcast. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, YouTube says account enablement can take up to 24 hours.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see What to check or change
Streamlabs skips or drops frames Check whether the PC is overloaded. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, close unnecessary applications, and compare CPU and GPU load. Test an available encoder suited to the hardware.
YouTube reports network problems Check upload capacity and connection stability. Lower bitrate to a level the connection can maintain, preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom, and try wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable.
The PC struggles when gameplay or overlays become active Retest with the real scene, remove nonessential animated sources or plugins, and reduce output workload. A quiet menu or idle desktop does not represent the full show.
The stream stops after the PC has been unattended Check sleep and power settings, cooling and ventilation, internet continuity, and the recovery steps you will use. A long test can reveal some operational issues, but cannot establish guaranteed uptime.
A local archive is missing or incomplete Confirm local recording is enabled and check that the file grows during the stream and plays back. YouTube advises checking archive growth and integrity when recording.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the stream is a loop of prerecorded videos rather than live gameplay or a camera production, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a desktop encoder running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not a way to broadcast live gameplay or a camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
