How to Optimize a VPS for 24/7 YouTube Streaming

A practical guide to keeping YouTube live from a VPS: choose FFmpeg or OBS, match server resources and egress to the workload, use YouTube’s encoder settings, and verify recovery end to end.

To keep a YouTube stream running 24/7 on a VPS, match the server to your encoder, size sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream bitrate, publish over RTMPS, and monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream health. A VPS can restart a failed process, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: test the actual workload and plan for host, network, and ingest failures.

Choose the workflow before choosing the VPS

For a simple prerecorded loop, a headless FFmpeg process can stream without a desktop interface. Choose OBS if you need scene composition, overlays, browser sources, or GUI-based controls. The choice matters because encoding and scene complexity affect CPU, memory, and possibly GPU needs; resolution alone is not enough to size a server.

  • FFmpeg: a lean fit for a fixed file or playlist loop when you do not need a scene-based interface.
  • OBS: a better fit when the broadcast depends on scenes, overlays, browser sources, or hands-on GUI operation.

These workflow distinctions and resource examples are described in Space-Node’s vendor guides, not independent benchmark tests: 24/7 VPS livestream guide, dated 2026-06-24 and VPS guide, dated 2026-07-05.

Set YouTube-compatible output

Choose codec, frame rate, resolution, and bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings. For standard H.264 ingest, YouTube lists these recommended video bitrates:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output Recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s encoder-ingest recommendations, not VPS specifications or guarantees of viewer quality. YouTube also publishes separate H.265 and AV1 recommendations; use the values for your selected codec and frame rate rather than transferring the H.264 figures to another codec. The guidance page was accessed in 2026 and does not expose a publication date: YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Use RTMP or, preferably, RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
  • Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video at up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio.
  • For audio, YouTube’s guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1-channel audio.

Estimate VPS resources and bandwidth from the real workload

Server sizing depends on whether the media is already encoded, whether the CPU is doing software encoding, whether GPU encoding is available and appropriate, and how much work OBS scenes or browser sources add. A provider’s published starting-point examples illustrate the variation: Space-Node lists a 720p FFmpeg loop at 2 CPU cores and 2 GB RAM, a 1080p FFmpeg loop at 2 cores and 4 GB RAM, and 1080p OBS software encoding at 4 cores and 4 GB RAM. These are vendor-authored examples, not independent measurements or requirements for every stream.

Use a plan that matches your encoder and media, then observe CPU, memory, disk, and network use during representative sessions. Scale up when measurement shows a bottleneck, not just because a stream is 1080p. If you use multiple streams, overlays, or browser sources, test those exact conditions before relying on a sizing estimate.

Calculate sustained egress and traffic allowance

Your VPS must sustain outbound delivery above the configured stream bitrate, with operational headroom. Confirm both the provider’s network capacity and any monthly transfer cap; a nominal uplink or a plan described as unmetered does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted delivery.

For scale, Space-Node estimates about 1 TB of monthly traffic at a continuous 2.5 Mbps bitrate. That is a provider estimate, not a universal measured figure; actual traffic varies with bitrate and uptime. Check your provider’s traffic policy against your own configured bitrate and continuous schedule.

Configure the stream and test the ingest path

  1. Confirm channel access and create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create the live broadcast and its stream key. Channel access and eligibility can vary, so confirm you can go live rather than assuming every new channel has immediate access.
  2. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and shared logs. Use a secure configuration or secret store accessible only to the streaming process.
  3. Select output settings. Set resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s guidance and your actual source. Keep sustained VPS egress comfortably above the selected bitrate and verify the provider’s traffic cap.
  4. Use RTMPS and check TLS connectivity. Google’s RTMPS documentation describes the correct RTMPS endpoint on port 443 and SNI for TLS authentication. If ingest will not connect, verify the endpoint is actually RTMPS, port 443 is reachable from the VPS, and the encoder or TLS client handles SNI correctly. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.
  5. Run a representative preflight. Test with similar motion and audio to the planned stream. Verify YouTube receives the expected picture and sound, then check the stream-health status and messages before treating the setup as ready. YouTube advises testing before going live.
  6. Launch and verify from both ends. Confirm the encoder process is running and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream. A running process alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving usable video and audio.

Make recovery observable, not just automatic

Run FFmpeg or OBS under a process supervisor, or configure the encoder to reconnect, so a crashed process can be restarted. Space-Node’s setup guide includes a systemd automatic-restart example. A restart policy is a recovery mechanism, not proof of continuous delivery: it cannot repair a VPS outage, blocked network path, expired or changed key, or ingest problem by itself.

Compare VPS approaches by operational fit

A managed streaming VPS may reduce setup work; a general-purpose VPS usually offers more control over the operating system and service configuration. The cited provider markets both categories, but that is a commercial offering, not an independent endorsement. Compare providers on the workload and failure modes that matter:
