Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To loop a playlist indefinitely on YouTube Live, put the video files in an FFmpeg concat-demuxer playlist and pass that playlist to FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1. FFmpeg repeats the input; YouTube receives a live feed from your encoder and does not loop the source for you. The example below sends H.264 video and AAC audio to YouTube’s RTMP-style ingest. It is a starting point, not a tested command: check your installed FFmpeg build and YouTube Studio settings, then run a test before going live.
Build a playlist FFmpeg can read
Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt beside the video files. List one file per line, in playback order:
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
Use relative paths where possible. The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1; avoid disabling that safeguard casually, since safe=0 accepts any filename. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Check whether the clips are compatible
The concat demuxer is useful when you want to avoid re-encoding, but the inputs must be compatible enough to concatenate reliably. Check that clips have consistent stream layouts, video dimensions, frame rates and codecs, and that their audio/video streams are present as expected. Exact compatibility depends on the files and FFmpeg build, so test transitions. If the clips need normalization or have incompatible streams, use FFmpeg’s concat filter and re-encode; the FFmpeg FAQ recommends the filter when re-encoding is needed.

Send the repeating playlist to YouTube Live
In YouTube Studio or your live stream settings, get the ingestion URL and stream name (the stream key). YouTube’s encoder interface may ask you to enter the stream name separately or append it to the URL. Use the format required by your encoder and account settings. Treat the stream name as a secret: don’t expose it in public scripts, screenshots or shell history. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes the ingestion address and stream name.
Set environment variables for the actual values, then run this illustrative command in a POSIX-style shell:

export YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL='rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_PATH'
export YOUTUBE_STREAM_NAME='YOUR_STREAM_NAME'
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_NAME"
Replace the placeholder values with your actual ingest details and use the output URL form YouTube or your encoder requires. Don’t paste a real stream name into a public script or share it. The example encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC in an FLV container for RTMP-style ingest. It uses -re to read the file input at its native rate for live output; confirm behavior with your installed FFmpeg version and a test stream. Put input options such as -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i. In FFmpeg’s input-looping model, -1 means repeat indefinitely; if you use an old or unusual build, check ffmpeg -h.
Choose bitrate and keyframe interval for your stream
The sample’s -g 60 creates a 60-frame GOP: that is a two-second keyframe interval only at 30 fps. YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and supports RTMP/RTMPS, with H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Match bitrate to your resolution, frame rate and codec, and ensure your upload connection can sustain it. YouTube’s current guidance lists these examples:

| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are encoder settings recommended by YouTube Help, not measured results, and its table may change. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the codec, resolution and frame rate you plan to use. The sample’s 4,500 kbps video bitrate is only a starting value; it does not match the cited YouTube recommendations for either table row.
Test the stream and confirm it is healthy
- Start a short test stream. Include representative motion and audio so you can assess both. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check YouTube’s live control room. Confirm it receives data at the expected resolution and frame rate. YouTube can detect these automatically unless you use a custom stream key with manual resolution settings.
- Monitor stream health and messages. The YouTube Live Streaming API exposes health status and configuration issues to API clients; check the control room for messages while the stream runs.
- Watch playlist transitions. Look and listen for gaps, freezes, audio discontinuities or timestamp problems when playback moves from one file to the next. If they occur, inspect the clip compatibility and consider normalizing with the concat filter and re-encoding.
Documentation does not establish a guarantee of uninterrupted playback across transitions or network interruptions. Testing with the actual files and connection is the way to catch problems before a longer broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open a playlist file | Check that playlist.txt is in the working directory or use the correct path. Verify each listed filename and use safe relative paths where possible. Don’t disable the concat demuxer’s safe-path check unless you understand the effect. |
| YouTube receives no video | Check the ingest URL and stream name against YouTube Studio. Confirm whether the stream name belongs in the URL or a separate encoder field, and verify the selected RTMP/RTMPS configuration. |
| The stream starts but buffers or drops frames | Compare the chosen resolution, frame rate and bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance, then check whether your upload connection can sustain the bitrate. Test at a lower output setting if necessary. |
| Clips have a gap, freeze or audio glitch at the join | Inspect stream layouts, dimensions, frame rates, codecs and audio/video presence. If the clips are not suitable for demuxer concatenation, normalize and re-encode them using the concat filter. |
| Looping does not repeat | Confirm -stream_loop -1 appears before the playlist’s -i. Check the installed FFmpeg build’s help and test the command with a short playlist. |
| Unexpected resolution or frame rate appears in the control room | Review FFmpeg’s output options and YouTube’s detection. If you use a custom stream key with manual resolution, verify that setting matches the encoded output. |
