If the host must run the game, it needs gaming hardware suited to that title and enough capacity to encode and upload the output. If another device renders the game, the host may only need to encode or relay its feed. If you are looping prerecorded video rather than broadcasting gameplay, the workload is different again.
For a true 24/7 gaming stream, compare a maintained local gaming PC with a cloud-hosted gaming machine that explicitly provides a suitable GPU. In either case, validate the YouTube output, sustained upload, monitoring, and recovery plan before relying on it continuously. YouTube’s guidance is to test with representative audio and motion, choose settings your connection can sustain, and monitor stream health during the event (YouTube live encoder settings, accessed October 3, 2026).
Start by identifying what the host has to do
“Hosting a stream” can mean several different workloads. The important distinction is whether the machine runs the game, encodes a feed made elsewhere, or simply sends already-rendered video to YouTube. These jobs have different hardware and network needs.
The host runs the game
If the game runs on the streaming host, select a gaming PC or remote machine based on that game’s system requirements and the added encoding workload. A generic low-cost VPS should not be assumed to have the GPU capacity or game performance required. AWS describes GPU-enabled EC2 as one cloud-gaming pattern, but that example does not establish that a particular EC2 configuration will run your game well (AWS Compute Blog, originally published October 27, 2021 and marked reviewed for accuracy in July 2025).

Another device renders the game
If a console or another computer renders the game, the host may only need to encode or relay the incoming video. First establish how the feed reaches the streaming machine and whether that device can deliver a usable video signal. The available evidence does not establish that every setup needs a capture card, so do not buy one until you have confirmed the source device’s output and connection requirements.
The feed is prerecorded
A host transmitting prerecorded or pre-rendered video may have a lighter workload than one rendering a demanding game in real time, but it still has to send a valid feed continuously. YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast scenario in which video continues to be sent while broadcasts are managed (YouTube Live Streaming API: live broadcasts). A prerecorded loop is not live gameplay; describe the content accurately to viewers.

Compare local and cloud gaming hosts
This framework identifies what to investigate; it does not establish that one option is always cheaper or more reliable. Costs and actual capacity depend on your hardware, workload, connection, region, and provider terms.

Size the connection for the stream settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery (YouTube live encoder settings; YouTube recommended live encoder settings, accessed October 3, 2026).

For H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrates include:

These are YouTube encoder targets for video, not minimum internet plans or guarantees that a particular home connection or virtual machine can sustain the stream. Audio, protocol overhead, other traffic, congestion, and connection stability also matter. Check the actual sustained outbound capacity at the host, leave operating margin, and choose settings that remain reliable over time. For a cloud machine, verify egress capacity for the specific instance and route rather than relying on a provider-wide headline number.

Validate the YouTube feed before depending on it
- Set the encoder to a supported configuration. Choose a listed protocol and codec, use CBR, set the keyframe interval to two seconds where possible, and do not exceed four seconds. Keep the frame rate at or below 60 fps (YouTube live encoder settings).
- Test representative content. Before going live, test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. A quiet desktop scene does not test the same workload as fast gameplay with active audio.
- Check stream health during the test. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and sound and that the encoder and network remain stable. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube live encoder settings).
- Repeat under realistic conditions. For a 24/7 setup, test the chosen host and settings over time and account for competing home-network traffic or cloud-instance limits.
Plan how you will detect and recover from failures
An always-on design needs an answer for more than “does it connect?” Decide who or what notices a failed feed, whether the encoder reconnects or restarts, and what happens after a host reboot or stream-key problem. YouTube’s Live Streaming API includes stream health concepts; a noData health status means the backend has no stream-health information. It is a reason to investigate monitoring, not a complete alerting system (YouTube Live Streaming API: live streams).
- For a local host: account for power, ISP, router, operating-system, game, and encoder failures. A UPS sized for the computer and network equipment is an optional way to cover brief local power interruptions; it does not protect against the other failure types.
- For a cloud host: confirm the instance’s restart behavior, remote access, persistent storage needs, GPU availability, and ongoing compute and egress costs with the selected provider.
- For either setup: document how to restore the encoder, reconnect the stream, and safely manage the stream key. No source reviewed establishes an uptime guarantee for a particular host.
Keep the stream and channel compliant
Use content you have the rights to broadcast, including game footage, music, overlays, and other audio or video in the feed. A technical setup that can transmit continuously does not itself establish that the content is authorized or that a channel meets YouTube’s policies. Review YouTube’s current rules and the terms that apply to your game and other media before leaving a stream unattended.
