In vMix, open Streaming Settings → Quality → Streaming Quality, set Encode Size to your intended stream resolution, then enter a bitrate in kbps based on YouTube’s live H.264 recommendations. For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60. A continuous stream has no special published bitrate preset: choose a rate your connection and computer can sustain, leave upload headroom, and test before relying on it.
Choose a resolution and bitrate that your setup can sustain
Resolution and bitrate are separate controls. Encode Size sets the dimensions sent to YouTube; bitrate sets how much data is used to represent each second of video. Keep the output aspect ratio aligned with your production, and choose a frame rate that matches it rather than increasing settings without a source or viewer need.
YouTube’s live H.264 recommendations provide a practical starting point. They are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or an uninterrupted stream. Use the live table, not YouTube’s separate guidance for uploaded videos.
| Live output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are the current values shown in YouTube Help; the page does not state a publication year. For AV1 or H.265/HEVC, consult the corresponding codec column in YouTube’s live encoder settings table and verify that your vMix version and hardware support the selected format.

Balance motion, detail, and stability
- 720p30 or 720p60 may be a more sustainable choice when upload capacity is constrained. YouTube’s H.264 starting rates are 4 Mbps and 8 Mbps respectively.
- 1080p30 and 1080p60 require more outgoing bandwidth at YouTube’s recommended rates: 10 Mbps and 14 Mbps respectively.
- Higher frame rates can suit fast motion, but the sources do not establish one best setting for every channel. Consider the source footage, the motion viewers need to see, the encoder’s sustained load, and available upload capacity.
- A higher output resolution does not automatically improve lower-resolution source material, and unstable delivery can outweigh the benefit of extra detail.
Set the vMix streaming quality
- Open the stream configuration. From the Stream control, open Streaming Settings and select a YouTube destination, or configure the current YouTube stream URL and key as a custom RTMP destination. vMix supports provider destinations and custom RTMP settings; see the vMix Streaming Settings guide.
- Open Quality → Streaming Quality. Set Encode Size to the resolution you selected. vMix says the encode size should match the aspect ratio in use.
- Enter the bitrate in kbps. The vMix field uses kbps, so 10 Mbps is 10,000 kbps, 14 Mbps is 14,000 kbps, 4 Mbps is 4,000 kbps, and 8 Mbps is 8,000 kbps. These conversions translate the YouTube H.264 recommendations above into the vMix field’s units.
- Select the stream source if available. Choose the intended vMix output where your edition provides that option. The available output selection depends on vMix edition.
- Choose a compatible video and audio path. H.264 video with AAC audio is the broadly compatible default. vMix’s current streaming guide describes H.264, AV1, and HEVC support where hardware support applies; YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for live ingest. Confirm the actual combination works before selecting a newer codec.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; vMix also identifies two seconds as its recommended/default interval.
- Choose RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP using TLS/SSL. If using a custom destination, copy the RTMPS URL from YouTube Live Control Room and confirm your encoder connection supports it. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.
What the network buffer does
vMix’s quality panel includes a network buffer setting that controls the maximum number of seconds vMix can keep buffered. Its documentation says increasing the buffer may help when maximum network speed is unreliable. A larger buffer can affect latency; it cannot repair a failed internet connection. For the setting’s behavior and the other streaming controls, consult the vMix Streaming Quality guide.
Calculate upload headroom for a continuous stream
YouTube recommends that total streaming bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth and advises leaving 20% headroom. Its current help page does not state a publication year for that figure. Measure outbound upload capacity rather than relying on a download-speed result, and account for other devices and traffic sharing the connection. If sending multiple streams at once, include their combined outgoing bitrates.

As a simple planning example, a single 10 Mbps stream needs more than 10 Mbps of available upload to preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom; the connection also needs room for other network use. The target is sustainable real-world upload, not just a one-time speed-test peak. YouTube cautions that shared networks can limit an individual connection and that connectivity disruption can break a stream.
- For a fixed streaming workstation, wired Ethernet can avoid some of the variability of a wireless link.
- Consider whether a backup internet path and backup power for the computer and network equipment are appropriate for your installation.
- Check sustained encoding load, heat, and power use on the actual PC or GPU. Hardware needs depend on your inputs, formats, and workload; no universal router, capture card, UPS, or ISP model is established by the cited guidance.
Test before trusting the 24/7 setup
- Create a private or unlisted test stream and verify that YouTube receives the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Use representative movement and audio. YouTube specifically advises testing before starting a live stream with the kind of sound and movement the real stream will contain.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages, and check vMix’s streaming status for errors or interruptions.
- Confirm upload capacity during ordinary network use and observe the setup under normal operating conditions before treating it as dependable for continuous use.
- If you have backup hardware or a second connection, test the transition and confirm viewers can still receive the stream. A failover plan is not dependable until tested on the actual installation.
YouTube recommends pre-stream testing and monitoring during a live event. Longer observation and failover checks are practical precautions for a continuous channel, not an official YouTube 24/7 requirement. Review YouTube’s encoder settings and test guidance and its streaming tips alongside the vMix status display.

Troubleshoot common resolution and bitrate problems
- The stream will not start: Check that the selected YouTube destination or custom RTMP URL and stream key are current, and confirm the configured protocol is supported by the encoder. Recheck the settings in YouTube Live Control Room and vMix.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: Check actual upload capacity, competing network traffic, and whether the chosen bitrate leaves the recommended 20% headroom. Lower the bitrate or output resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected rate. A buffer may help with some speed variation, but not a lost connection.
- The image looks soft or blocky: Verify that Encode Size matches the intended output and aspect ratio, that the bitrate was entered in kbps rather than Mbps, and that the selected rate matches YouTube’s live recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate. Test with representative content before changing several variables at once.
- Motion is choppy or the encoder struggles: Confirm the intended frame rate and watch the vMix streaming status and computer load. A higher frame rate can increase the recommended bitrate and encoding burden; test a lower frame rate or resolution if the system cannot sustain the chosen output.
- Audio or video compatibility is uncertain: Start with H.264 video and AAC audio, then validate the full path in a test stream before switching to AV1 or HEVC. Hardware and vMix-version support can affect whether newer codec options are available.
- Latency is higher than expected: Review the network buffer setting and the end-to-end streaming setup. Increasing vMix’s buffer can affect latency, so it is not a free reliability improvement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, there is no OBS or home connection to keep running, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. Plans differ by duration, not features, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
