Basic HD and Basic are different editions
The names are easy to mix up. vMix’s Basic Comparison Table describes a free, legacy Basic edition and was last updated September 22, 2023. Its streaming row does not show streaming as included. Basic HD is the current paid entry edition in vMix’s purchase comparison, and vMix’s user guide documents built-in RTMP streaming to YouTube Live. Taken together, those official materials make Basic HD the edition to assess for a vMix YouTube stream.
The purchase comparison lists Basic HD at $60 USD for a lifetime license. That is the listed price on the current comparison page reviewed in 2026; check vMix’s page for the current price and feature matrix before buying.

What “continuous” does—and does not—tell you
If by continuous you mean sending a live broadcast to YouTube rather than exporting a recording, Basic HD is the relevant vMix edition. vMix’s guide documents YouTube Live as an output destination and describes its built-in RTMP streaming.
If you mean streaming overnight, for 24 hours, or indefinitely, the license comparison and user guide reviewed here do not establish a maximum stream length. They also do not promise an uninterrupted connection. Whether a stream stays live depends on the whole setup, including the computer, network, vMix configuration, YouTube account eligibility and YouTube-side controls. Do not treat the license name as an uptime guarantee.

Check whether Basic HD fits your production
Count every loaded item
vMix counts loaded items such as videos, images, titles and cameras as inputs. Basic HD allows four total inputs, with no more than three camera/NDI/OMT inputs. A production with several media sources can reach the total-input limit even if it uses fewer than four cameras.
Match the edition to the source and workload
Basic HD’s listed maximum is 1920 × 1080. Consider a higher edition if you need more than four total inputs, more than three cameras, 4K support or other features available in higher tiers. vMix notes that the computer must also be capable of handling the selected inputs: an edition’s limits do not establish how well a particular PC will perform in real time.

Set up a YouTube stream with vMix
The edition choice is only one part of going live. vMix documents the YouTube Live destination and built-in RTMP streaming; use the current vMix guide and YouTube’s live controls for the exact connection settings and account requirements.
- Confirm the edition and production fit. Use Basic HD or a higher edition for a vMix stream. Count all loaded media and production items against the input limit, and confirm the resolution and camera needs fit your edition.
- Prepare YouTube Live. Sign in to the channel you intend to use, confirm it is eligible to stream, and create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream key from YouTube’s live control room; treat it as a secret and do not share it.
- Configure vMix streaming. Open the streaming controls, choose YouTube Live as the destination, and enter the stream key as directed by the current vMix user guide. Verify the output settings against YouTube’s current requirements and your available upload bandwidth.
- Check the output before relying on it. Confirm the YouTube preview receives video and audio, then start the broadcast from the appropriate controls. Monitor the stream and YouTube status rather than assuming a successful connection guarantees it will remain live.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
A technically successful stream can still run into platform or rights issues. Use only video and audio you have permission to broadcast, including music, gameplay footage and other creators’ material. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and channel monetization policies for the content and account involved; permission to use a recording does not by itself establish that a channel meets monetization requirements.

Troubleshooting a vMix-to-YouTube stream
- YouTube is not receiving the stream: Check that YouTube Live is available to the channel, the correct live event and stream key are selected, and the key was copied accurately. If you expose a key, replace it in YouTube Studio and update vMix.
- The stream connects but drops: A license does not ensure an uninterrupted connection. Check network stability, computer load and the status shown in YouTube’s live control room; reconnect using the current vMix and YouTube instructions.
- The stream looks wrong or will not run smoothly: Verify the output resolution and other stream settings against YouTube’s current guidance, then check that the PC can handle the selected inputs. vMix’s input limits are not a performance guarantee.
- You cannot add another source: Count videos, images, titles and cameras together. If the total exceeds four, or camera/NDI/OMT sources exceed three, assess a higher edition.
- The broadcast ends during a long session: The reviewed vMix documentation does not state a maximum duration or promise indefinite operation. Check YouTube’s current limits and event configuration, and plan to monitor the session rather than assuming it can run indefinitely.
Costs and license choice
The current vMix comparison lists Basic HD as a $60 USD lifetime license. The legacy Basic comparison lists Basic as free but does not list streaming as included. Since Basic HD’s listed feature ceiling is four inputs, three camera/NDI inputs and 1080p, a production needing more may require a higher edition; compare current prices and features directly with vMix before purchase.
Choose Basic HD if you need vMix’s documented YouTube streaming workflow and its listed limits suit your production. Do not choose it on the assumption that “continuous” means guaranteed 24/7 operation.
