Short answer: h264_nvenc can move H.264 video encoding from the CPU to dedicated NVIDIA encoder hardware, while libx264 encodes in software on the CPU. NVENC can therefore free CPU headroom, but it does not make the whole streaming pipeline CPU-free—and there is no universal quality winner at the same bitrate. Compare both on your own system with matching output settings and representative content.
What changes when you switch encoders?
Both libx264 and h264_nvenc produce H.264 video. The difference is where the video encoding work happens: libx264 uses CPU software encoding; h264_nvenc uses NVIDIA’s dedicated encoder hardware on a compatible GPU. NVIDIA describes NVENC as independent of the graphics and CUDA cores, so calling it “CUDA encoding” is inaccurate.
That distinction can matter when a game, capture setup, or other stream tasks are already using substantial CPU resources. It does not guarantee a particular CPU percentage or that the CPU will sit idle. Capture, compositing, filters, scaling or pixel-format conversion, audio encoding, and software overhead can still consume CPU. The result depends on the machine and the complete FFmpeg pipeline.
Quality at the same bitrate: test, don’t assume
Neither encoder is automatically better-looking in every situation. Quality depends on encoder features and settings, including preset choices that trade encoding performance, compression efficiency, and latency. NVIDIA’s documentation describes those tradeoffs, but it does not establish a universal, controlled libx264-versus-h264_nvenc winner for YouTube Live.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
To make a useful comparison, keep the content, resolution, frame rate, H.264 bitrate, and YouTube output settings the same. Inspect fine detail and motion, where compression artifacts are easier to notice. Also check dropped frames, encoder overload, and YouTube stream health: an image-quality advantage is not useful if the stream becomes unstable.
A practical A/B test
- Choose a representative gameplay clip or scene, including the movement and detail you expect during the live stream.
- Record or stream it once with
libx264and once withh264_nvenc. Match resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and the other applicable output settings; note each encoder’s preset and options. - Compare the results at the same viewing size. Look at motion, fine textures, and visible artifacts rather than judging from a still frame alone.
- Check CPU use on your own machine, along with encoder overload, dropped frames, and YouTube’s stream-health feedback. There is no generally applicable CPU-reduction figure to substitute for this check.
- If publishing your results, identify the CPU and GPU generation, FFmpeg version and build, encoder and preset settings, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and test content. Without those details, another creator cannot interpret the comparison reliably.
Use YouTube-compatible live settings
YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion for H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, at frame rates up to 60 fps. For this comparison, the H.264 bitrate figures below are the relevant column; YouTube’s separate AV1/H.265 recommendations are not interchangeable with them.

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate | YouTube minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that different encoders will look identical at a listed rate. The same YouTube table recommends 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 1080p60 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30; those figures belong to a different codec column, not H.264.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- YouTube’s recommended advanced settings include progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- Choose a stream quality your upload connection can sustain reliably. Test before going live and monitor stream health during the event.
YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Which encoder should you choose?
Choose NVENC when CPU headroom is the priority
Try h264_nvenc if you have supported NVIDIA hardware and want video encoding handled by its dedicated encoder rather than CPU software encoding. Check your particular GPU’s capabilities and use a compatible FFmpeg build and driver stack. Hardware support and available encoder features vary; owning an NVIDIA GPU alone does not establish that every NVENC feature is available.
Choose libx264 when you want CPU software encoding or lack compatible NVIDIA hardware
libx264 does not depend on an NVIDIA GPU. It may be the straightforward option if you do not have supported NVENC hardware or want to configure software encoding. Whether it produces a preferable result for your content is something to establish with a matched test, not a rule that applies to every system.

Make the decision on your actual stream
If both options are available, test both under the same conditions. Favor the one that meets your image-quality needs while keeping the complete pipeline stable. The official guidance cited here supplies YouTube settings and describes NVENC’s hardware role, but does not provide a universal quality verdict or numeric CPU comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
h264_nvencis unavailable or fails to initialize: confirm that the GPU supports the required NVENC path and that your FFmpeg build and driver stack are compatible. If not, uselibx264or another encoder your setup supports.- CPU remains busy after switching to NVENC: inspect capture, filters, scaling and pixel-format conversion, compositing, audio encoding, and other software work. NVENC offloads video encoding; it does not offload every stage.
- The image looks worse than expected: verify that you are comparing the same resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and content. Review encoder settings and test motion and fine detail; a mismatched comparison cannot identify an encoder-quality difference.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems: check that your bitrate is sustainable on the available upload connection, use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, and run a representative test before the event.
When continuous streaming is the real problem
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video live on YouTube around the clock, choosing between libx264 and NVENC is only one part of the setup: the computer running the stream must also remain available. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists on YouTube, so no home computer or OBS session has to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo for details.
