If your vMix YouTube stream loses sound just after a playlist item changes, first check the affected input’s audio button and Automatically Mix Audio (also called Follow). Follow can turn an input’s audio on or off depending on whether that input is live. It is a strong first check for audio that disappears during a switch, but it is not a confirmed cause until you identify which playlist feature is running and compare the stream with a local recording. vMix’s Follow guidance was last updated on March 31, 2020; labels may vary by installed version.
Start with the input that went quiet
- Open the Audio Mixer and locate the input that should now be audible.
- Check that the input’s audio button is enabled. Follow cannot make an input audible if its audio is switched off there.
- Inspect Automatically Mix Audio, represented by green/orange arrows and also available in the input settings. If you need this input’s sound to stay active even when the input is not live, disable Automatically Mix Audio for that input and leave its audio button on.
- Play through the transition again and watch the input’s audio meter. If the meter moves and the sound returns, the input’s audio state was a relevant part of the problem; continue to compare the stream with a recording to confirm the output path too.
vMix describes Follow as changing an input’s audio according to whether that input is in the live output. The control is therefore especially relevant when sound drops as the live input changes. vMix Knowledge Base: Why does my audio turn off when switching between inputs?
Confirm which playlist workflow is changing
“Playlist item” can mean two different things in vMix, and the right diagnosis depends on which one you are using.
A List input advancing between files
A vMix List input contains a sequence of video and audio files. Its Auto Next setting controls automatic advancement and is enabled by default. When sound disappears as a List advances, check the newly selected file itself as well as the input’s audio state: the new item may have no audio track, or its audio format may not be decodable in your setup. The vMix 26 archived guide documents the List and Auto Next behavior: List.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The separate Playlist feature switching inputs
The separate Playlist feature automates switching among inputs. If the sound disappears when it selects another input, inspect the audio button and Follow setting on the input that should be heard. A List’s move from one media file to another is not the same operation as a Playlist’s switch from one input to another. vMix’s training catalog treats Playlist, List Input, and audio routing as distinct topics: vMix Training Videos.
Use a recording to separate source audio from stream audio
Make or inspect a vMix recording that includes the transition, then compare its sound with YouTube playback. vMix documents Master as the default audio mix for recording, streaming, and external output. If the recording is also silent, start with the source item and the input’s audio state. If it has sound but YouTube does not, inspect which audio mix is selected for streaming and whether the affected input is included in the Master mix. The archived vMix 26 guide explains the Master and auxiliary buses: Audio Mixer.

Route the symptom to the next check
| What you observe | Check next |
|---|---|
| Sound disappears as the live input changes | Check that input’s audio button and Automatically Mix Audio (Follow). |
| A List input advances to a new file | Confirm this is a List, then check the new file’s audio track and supported format. |
| The recording and YouTube stream are both silent | Inspect the source item and the vMix input’s audio state. |
| The recording has sound but YouTube does not | Inspect the audio mix selected for streaming and whether the input is included in it. If stream audio is also very low or distorted, use the cabling check below. |
| Only one particular file has no audio | Check whether it contains an audio track and whether its format is supported; certain files or DVDs may need an AC3 decoder. |
Check the audio connection only if the symptom fits
A balanced-microphone and unbalanced-computer-input mismatch is a separate possible cause when YouTube or Facebook audio is low, distorted, or muted even though the local recording sounds good. It is not a general explanation for sound stopping after a playlist transition. For that specific cabling problem, vMix recommends using a computer audio interface that supports XLR; its short-term mixer adjustment is to lower the right audio level to zero with Separate Mono. Follow vMix’s guidance only when the quiet or distorted stream symptom and cabling match: Facebook / YouTube Stream Audio very low, muted or missing (last updated March 16, 2023).
When one file alone has no sound
If the input meter and other playlist items behave normally, but a particular video or DVD has no audio, check that item’s audio track and format. vMix notes that certain video files and DVDs may require an AC3 (Dolby Digital) decoder. Treat this as a format-specific exception, not the default explanation for audio disappearing after every change. See vMix: No audio when playing certain video files and DVDs (last updated September 2, 2020).
