To display an external SRT file over video in GStreamer, parse it with subparse and connect it to the text pad of textoverlay. The documented pipeline below renders the captions during playback. It does not save a new video with captions permanently embedded. A YouTube playlist is a separate input problem: the GStreamer documentation reviewed here does not establish that a YouTube playlist URL can be used directly.
Display SRT captions over a video with textoverlay
For a local video GStreamer can decode and a matching .srt file, use the official explicit-overlay example:
gst-launch-1.0 textoverlay name=overlay ! videoconvert ! videoscale ! autovideosink
filesrc location=movie.avi ! decodebin3 ! videoconvert ! overlay.video_sink
filesrc location=movie.srt ! subparse ! overlay.text_sinkReplace movie.avi and movie.srt with your file paths. The graph sends decoded video to overlay.video_sink and parses the SRT cues into timestamped text buffers for overlay.text_sink. textoverlay matches the caption and video timestamps, so each cue appears at its scheduled time. The GStreamer documentation describes the element as rendering text on top of a video stream: textoverlay documentation and gst-launch-1.0 documentation.
What the pipeline does—and does not do
- It parses an external SRT file with
subparseand overlays its cues on decoded video. - It plays the result through
autovideosink; it does not encode or save a captioned output file. - The exact decoder, video sink, and codec support available depend on the GStreamer plugins installed on your system.
Text wrapping is enabled by default for textoverlay. The documented example relies on timestamps in both streams rather than manually specifying when individual captions appear.

Use playbin3 when you want simpler subtitle playback
If you do not need to wire the overlay pads yourself, GStreamer documents playbin3 with a media uri and external subtitle suburi. This delegates subtitle playback to the player and is simpler to configure, while the explicit textoverlay pipeline gives you direct control over the overlay path. The player documentation also covers external subtitles, stream selection, and buffering: playbin documentation.
These are two playback approaches, not two ways of producing a permanently captioned file. For an output file, the pipeline needs additional video encoding, container muxing, and an output sink after the overlay. The cited subtitle example does not prescribe those encoding or container choices; select and verify them for the formats and plugins in your installation.

Handle a YouTube playlist as a separate input step
The GStreamer references cited here document generic URI playback and network streaming, but do not document resolving YouTube watch URLs, extracting YouTube playlist entries, or advancing through a YouTube playlist. Do not assume that placing a YouTube playlist URL in a GStreamer uri property will work.
For a playlist workflow, treat retrieval and iteration as upstream tasks: resolve each playlist entry to a media URI that GStreamer can read, then pass entries into your playback or processing pipeline. The resolver, authentication or availability requirements, and current YouTube compatibility are not established by the cited GStreamer documentation. Test those separately in your environment. The GStreamer playback tutorials provide general playback context, not a verified YouTube playlist recipe.

Check text handling and timing when captions look wrong
Captions are missing or appear at the wrong times
Confirm that the SRT file is being read by filesrc, parsed by subparse, and linked to overlay.text_sink. The video must reach overlay.video_sink. Because the overlay matches timestamps, mismatched timing in the subtitle file can make cues appear too early or late.
Characters display incorrectly
If you use subtitleoverlay as an alternative autoplugging bin, its documented subtitle-encoding control can be relevant. When unset, encoding falls back to GST_SUBTITLE_ENCODING, then ISO-8859-15. It also documents font-desc, subtitle-ts-offset in nanoseconds (default zero), and silent. These are subtitleoverlay controls, not settings shown in the explicit textoverlay command above. Network playback pauses while buffering
For applications using playbin, the documentation says to keep or set the pipeline to PAUSED while a buffering message reports less than 100%, then return it to PLAYING at 100% if playback is desired. This is application-level buffering guidance, not a requirement for the local-file command shown above.
