Which GStreamer alternative fits a 24/7 YouTube playlist?
Choose based on what you need to automate. OBS is a practical computer-based option with documented looping controls. A hosted service moves playback off your local machine, while a standalone hardware encoder may suit a dedicated broadcast setup. GStreamer remains relevant for custom pipelines, but the available GStreamer material does not provide a current, complete unattended playlist recipe.

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream destination and key supplied through Live setup. Its guidance also notes that first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before a planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Set up a looping playlist in OBS
This is the computer-based route: the machine running OBS must stay available, and playback, encoding, network transmission, and recovery all depend on the complete setup. OBS’s documentation describes media looping and an automatic reconnect control, but does not promise uninterrupted operation in every failure scenario.

- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube Live setup, create or select the broadcast and copy the server URL and stream key. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube.
- Configure OBS for the broadcast. Open OBS Studio’s stream settings, choose the relevant service/server configuration, and enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it.
- Add a playlist source. In the desired OBS scene, add a VLC Video source. Install VLC first, using the same architecture as OBS, then add the media items to the source’s playlist.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable loop to repeat the playlist, or shuffle if you want its items in a changing order. Confirm the intended order and that each file loads before going live.
- Set output and start the broadcast. Configure output settings in OBS for your source material and available upload bandwidth, then start streaming. OBS documents bitrate and output controls; use YouTube’s current guidance for suitable values rather than assuming one bitrate fits every resolution and connection.
- Check the live output. Confirm that YouTube receives the broadcast, audio and video are present, and the playlist advances and returns to the beginning as expected. A preview or short pre-launch check can catch wrong files, a muted source, or an invalid stream key.
When the source is a single clip
If you only need one file to repeat, add an OBS Media Source instead of VLC Video and enable its Loop option. OBS documents Media Source as supporting individual local video and audio files; playback restarts when the file ends. This is not the documented choice for a multi-file playlist.
Reconnect is not full failover
OBS has an advanced automatic reconnect option. It can help when a connection drops, but reconnect behavior does not by itself monitor every failure layer or guarantee continuous service. A failed host, stalled media source, home internet outage, or YouTube ingest interruption may need operator attention. Where GStreamer still fits
GStreamer may suit an operator who needs to build and maintain a custom media pipeline. The available evidence is a 2017 conference presentation about an alternative RTMP implementation that lists YouTube Live as a destination. That establishes historical destination capability, not a current turnkey recipe for playlist sequencing, unattended recovery, or dependable 24/7 operation. See the GStreamer Conference presentation.
For any custom pipeline, separately plan the media-selection and looping logic, encoding and transmission to YouTube, and supervision/recovery if the process, host, network, or ingest connection fails. The cited presentation does not settle those operational details.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the stream: check that OBS has the correct YouTube server URL and current stream key, and that live streaming is enabled for the channel.
- The playlist source is missing or will not load: confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture, then verify each playlist item is accessible on the computer running OBS.
- A clip ends and playback stops: use VLC Video for a multi-file list and enable loop; for one file, use Media Source with its Loop option.
- The stream disconnects: review the network and OBS automatic reconnect setting. Reconnect may help with a dropped connection, but it cannot fix every host, media, or ingest failure.
- Video stalls or quality is unstable: compare the configured output with the source and available upload bandwidth, and use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for bitrate and output settings. The cited OBS materials do not prescribe universal values.
- The planned stream cannot start yet: if this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for YouTube’s stated activation period of up to 24 hours.

Before looping prerecorded content, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every video and audio track. A playlist’s availability or successful transmission does not establish permission to use its contents.
