Put your tracks in a text playlist, feed that list to FFmpeg with the concat demuxer, and map its audio stream to the YouTube Live output. For a playlist that should repeat, add -stream_loop -1 before the playlist input. The files must be compatible or normalized first, and the music must be cleared for live use.
Prepare the music playlist
- Create a plain-text file such as
playlist.txt, with one track per line in the order you want them played:file '/path/to/track-01.mp3' file '/path/to/track-02.mp3' file '/path/to/track-03.mp3' - Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg. Keep the playlist file and every referenced track accessible to the FFmpeg process for the full stream.
- Check compatibility before using stream copy. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Differing file durations or inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps or artifacts at transitions. If tracks differ materially, normalize or transcode them to compatible properties, then listen through the transitions. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Choose whether the playlist repeats
For a finite playlist, provide it as a concat input without a loop option. To repeat it indefinitely, put -stream_loop -1 before the relevant input: -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt. FFmpeg defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping and -stream_loop 0 as no repeat. These are input options, so their position before the input matters. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.
Connect the playlist audio to a visual stream
When video or another visual input and the audio playlist are separate inputs, use explicit -map options so FFmpeg sends the intended video and playlist audio. The example below illustrates the command shape for a video file plus a repeating audio playlist; it is a template, not a tested command for every input, FFmpeg build, or YouTube configuration:
ffmpeg
-re -i video-or-visual-input
-stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v YOUR_VIDEO_BITRATE -g YOUR_TWO_SECOND_GOP
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'RTMPS_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
- Replace
video-or-visual-inputwith the actual video or visual source and confirm its duration and looping behavior. A static image or finite video may need different handling from a continuous video source. -map 0:v:0selects the first video stream from input 0;-map 1:a:0selects the first audio stream from input 1. Adjust the input numbers and stream selectors if your command uses a different order or source type.- The example uses AAC audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube lists 128 Kbps as its recommended stereo audio bitrate. Confirm the source is stereo if relying on that recommendation.
- Set the video bitrate and GOP/keyframe interval for the actual resolution, frame rate, and codec.
YOUR_TWO_SECOND_GOPis a placeholder, not a literal value: for example, a 30 fps stream uses 60 frames for a two-second GOP. Confirm the encoder’s expected units and available options in your installed FFmpeg build. - Keep the stream key secret; do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or support posts.
Set YouTube Live ingest correctly
- In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the RTMPS server URL and stream key, then use those values as the output destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Follow its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
- Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s published recommendation for the resolution, frame rate, and video codec you are actually sending. There is no single bitrate that suits every stream.
- Use a constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds where your encoder settings permit; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. The exact FFmpeg option and GOP value depend on the codec, frame rate, and build.
- Check supported ingest codecs before changing the template. YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio over RTMP/RTMPS. The sample command uses H.264 and AAC.
Test before starting the live session
Run a test with representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health in Live Control Room before relying on the setup. Listen to playlist transitions and confirm the intended music is audible, continuous, and not replaced by audio from the visual input. Verify that the selected bitrate is sustainable on the upload connection; a stream that exceeds reliable upload capacity can become unstable. YouTube recommends testing with content similar to the intended live stream in its encoder settings guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Clear music rights for live use
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. A persistent match can replace the live stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license by itself may not prevent interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm that your permission covers YouTube live streaming, relevant territories, and any intended monetization, and ask whether allowlisting is required. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- No music in the output: Check that the playlist is input 1 and that
-map 1:a:0points to its audio stream. Confirm the playlist paths resolve and that the files contain audio. - FFmpeg rejects a track or transitions fail: The concat demuxer requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Inspect the files, normalize or transcode mismatches, and test the transitions again.
- Gaps or clicks between tracks: Check duration metadata and compare the tracks’ stream properties and lengths. FFmpeg warns that inaccurate durations and unequal stream lengths can create artifacts or gaps; listen through the full sequence rather than assuming file concatenation will be seamless.
- The playlist ends instead of repeating: Confirm
-stream_loop -1is before the playlist’s-iinput and that the command has not applied the loop option to another input. - YouTube reports connection or stream health issues: Recheck the RTMPS URL and key, the selected codec and bitrate row, the keyframe interval, and whether your connection can sustain the bitrate. Use the current YouTube guidance for the exact resolution and frame rate.
- The stream is interrupted despite having music permission: Check for a Content ID match and ask the rights holder whether the channel needs to be allowlisted for live streams.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer or home connection to keep FFmpeg running, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud on a YouTube channel. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is always on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
