XSplit Broadcaster is the better-documented choice if you need to play a sequence of local video files on a YouTube live stream: it has a Video Playlist source with continuous-playback controls. Streamlabs Desktop’s official quick-start explains adding sources and going live, but does not establish an equivalent multi-file playlist workflow. That gap is not proof Streamlabs lacks the feature; check your installed version and test it before committing to an unattended stream.
What “YouTube playlist stream” means here
This comparison is about sending a sequence of video files stored on your computer through streaming software to YouTube Live. It is not a guide to broadcasting a YouTube playlist URL or rebroadcasting videos hosted by someone else. The documented XSplit workflow uses local files, and the same distinction matters for rights: only broadcast material you are authorized to use.
Which app fits a local-file playlist?
| Question | XSplit Broadcaster | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Is a multi-file playlist workflow documented in the reviewed official material? | Yes. XSplit documents a Video Playlist source for multiple videos with continuous playback and additional playback options. XSplit Sources Menu | The reviewed official quick-start covers source setup and going live on YouTube, but does not document a multi-file playlist procedure. This does not establish that the feature is unavailable. Streamlabs Desktop Quick Start Guide |
| What should you verify before relying on it? | Confirm the playlist order, continuous playback behavior, audio, and any transition controls in your installed version. XSplit’s playlist article was updated 2022-11-08. Creating a Video Playlist | Inspect the available source types in your installed version and verify whether it can advance through multiple files as needed. |
| Does the documentation settle every comparison point? | No. The documentation establishes the playlist source, not a guarantee about every version, operating system, audio-routing setup, or unattended-run outcome. | No. The quick-start establishes a general YouTube streaming setup, not playlist parity or the absence of a playlist feature. |
For a local-file playlist, XSplit is the more defensible choice based on the documented feature. If you prefer Streamlabs for its existing scenes or workflow, first confirm sequential playback and test the complete setup rather than assuming that ordinary media-source support behaves like a playlist.
Set up a local video playlist in XSplit
- Open the scene you intend to stream in XSplit Broadcaster.
- Choose Add Source > Scene Widgets > Video Playlist.
- Add the local video files you want in the sequence, arrange them as required, and save the playlist.
- Review the playlist’s available playback controls, including continuous playback, and confirm the behavior you need. XSplit documents the playlist workflow here: Creating a Video Playlist and Sources Menu — Introduction.
- Check the files’ audio and picture in the scene. XSplit documents common media sources such as MP4 and source properties with playback controls; confirm compatibility with your own files in the installed version. Image, Video, and Audio Source
Set up Streamlabs Desktop for YouTube—and verify playlist support
Streamlabs’ official quick-start describes setting up sources and going live on YouTube, but it does not provide a multi-file playlist recipe. Use it for the general streaming setup, then inspect the current source menu in your installed app for a playlist source or another documented way to advance through files. Do not treat a single video source as proof that multiple files will play sequentially.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open Streamlabs Desktop and configure the scene and sources using the current Streamlabs Quick Start Guide.
- Check the installed version’s source options for an explicit multi-file playlist and the controls it provides for order, looping, and transitions.
- If you do not find a clearly documented playlist workflow, do not assume it will advance automatically. Test with the actual files and confirm each transition before using it for a scheduled or unattended stream.
Connect either encoder to YouTube Live
Both applications are encoder workflows: YouTube receives the outgoing video from the software, and you check the incoming stream in Live Control Room before starting the event. You can connect with YouTube’s server URL and stream key or use a YouTube integration offered by the software. First-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain the connection details if you are using a server URL and stream key.
- Enter those details in the encoder, or use its YouTube integration if available in your version. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your event.
- Start sending the stream from XSplit or Streamlabs Desktop, then wait for the incoming video to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview before going live. YouTube’s instruction is: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.” YouTube live streaming tips
- Start the YouTube event only after you have confirmed the picture, sound, and event details.
Encoder settings that matter for a playlist
A playlist does not remove the normal encoder requirements. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose a resolution and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain consistently, rather than selecting the highest available setting by default. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the specific output you plan to use.

Before relying on a long run, test representative files with both motion and audio. Verify that the playlist advances, the next file’s sound is captured, levels are usable, and the YouTube preview remains stable. YouTube advises checking stream health and monitoring audio and video during the broadcast; its live streaming tips also recommend a stream test and checking the event page.
Test and troubleshoot before the scheduled stream
- The next file does not start: Confirm that the source is a playlist rather than a single media file, that the files were added and saved, and that the playlist’s playback controls are set as intended. In Streamlabs, first establish that the installed version offers a multi-file sequential workflow.
- A file plays but has no sound: Check the file itself, the source’s audio settings, and the encoder’s audio output. Listen in the scene and in YouTube’s incoming preview; do not assume desktop or file audio is being captured because the picture appears.
- The order or transitions are wrong: Review the saved playlist order and the source’s available playback or transition controls, then test the full sequence from the beginning. Exact controls can depend on the installed version.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm the selected event, server URL and stream key (or the integration’s connection), then check the encoder status and YouTube Live Control Room. Do not publish the event until the preview is present and correct.
- The stream health is poor or playback stutters: Reduce output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the computer and stable upload connection can sustain; use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as a starting point. Test again while monitoring stream health.
- The stream stops during a long run: A playlist feature by itself does not guarantee unattended recovery. Check the computer, connection, encoder, and YouTube event, and decide who will monitor and restart the stream if needed.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Use only videos and audio you have permission to broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance specifically cautions that trailer content must not infringe other people’s content; this is a general reminder, not a determination that any particular clip is cleared. Review the event’s settings and make sure the material, including music and embedded footage, is appropriate to stream. See Manage live stream settings.
