XSplit Broadcaster CPU Usage Too High During a Continuous YouTube Stream: How to Diagnose and Fix It

Diagnose high CPU use during a continuous XSplit YouTube stream by checking the real output first, then testing encoder settings, workload, and upload capacity.

First check whether the outgoing YouTube stream is actually dropping frames. XSplit’s Stage preview can show an FPS dip even when the stream or recording is smooth; a preview dip alone does not prove that viewers are seeing a problem. Check XSplit’s status bar and inspect the live output or a local recording before changing settings. If the output is affected, work through encoder load and network checks separately.

Confirm whether the stream or only the Stage preview is affected

Compare what XSplit displays with the result viewers receive. XSplit says it prioritizes livestream and recording processes, and that a Stage preview FPS drop is not a concern when CPU/GPU use is low and the resulting output is smooth. Check the XSplit status bar, then review the live stream or a local recording. XSplit Support’s FPS troubleshooting page shows an updated date of 11/08/2022: Fixing FPS-Related Issues.

  • Preview dips, output smooth: Avoid treating the preview alone as evidence that viewers are seeing dropped frames.
  • Output stutters or drops frames: Check encoder errors and CPU load in YouTube’s live dashboard, then test the XSplit workload and upload connection.

Keep a short record of CPU and GPU use, XSplit version, resolution, frame rate, codec, scene/source complexity, and whether the symptom appears in the preview or the output. Those details help distinguish a resource bottleneck from an upload problem.

Check encoder load before changing hardware

YouTube’s guidance is direct: “You can look for encoder errors on the live dashboard and check the CPU load on your encoder.” See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps. If the encoder reports errors or CPU use is high while the output is affected, reduce work on the PC and test XSplit settings one at a time.

Lower XSplit’s workload in reversible steps

Close competing programs

Close applications and background processes that are not needed during the broadcast. This frees system resources without changing your stream configuration. Recheck CPU/GPU use and the actual output after the change.

Change XSplit’s CPU/GPU processing preference

  1. Open Tools > Settings > Advanced.
  2. Note the current processing preference, then test Prefer GPU if CPU use is high, or Prefer CPU if GPU use is high.
  3. Change only this setting, run the stream long enough to compare, and inspect the actual output and CPU/GPU load. Revert if the change shifts the bottleneck or worsens output.

XSplit documents a default mode that balances CPU and GPU processing. It describes Prefer GPU as using GPU functions for accelerated video decoding and other processing. Exact behavior and available choices can depend on the installed version and hardware. See XSplit’s Settings guide.

Test encoding options and reduce output demands if needed

  1. Open Broadcast, select the gear for the YouTube output, and open Video Encoding Settings.
  2. If another video codec is available, try it and compare CPU/GPU load and output stability.
  3. If the problem continues, lower the stage resolution or frame rate, then test again. Make one adjustment at a time so you can identify which change helps.

Codec choices depend on the system and XSplit version. Lowering resolution or frame rate reduces the amount of video work, but also changes the stream viewers receive. Choose a level that meets the channel’s needs and remains stable; the sources do not establish a universal setting or CPU threshold.

Separate a YouTube upload problem from encoder trouble

If XSplit’s encoder output looks and sounds healthy but viewers see interruptions, investigate the outbound connection rather than assuming CPU is the cause. XSplit provides a Test Bandwidth button in the output encoding settings and advises setting bitrate in line with its calculated average data rate. YouTube also recommends leaving upload bandwidth headroom: its undated Streaming tips page advises 20% room.

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s undated live encoder settings guide recommends H.264 at 6 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or PC will sustain the stream. Set an appropriate bitrate for the selected output and leave upload capacity for headroom.

Consider a hardware encoder only if encoding is the bottleneck

If checks show that CPU-bound encoding—not preview rendering or network capacity—is the problem, a compatible graphics card with hardware video encoding may help. YouTube’s encoder setup guide says Nvidia GPUs include NVENC hardware encoding, which can encode without using the CPU.

That does not mean any particular GPU will work in your PC or XSplit configuration. Before buying, verify the available encoder options in your installed XSplit version, GPU and driver compatibility, power-supply capacity, and case clearance. The official guidance does not compare specific cards or codecs, so there is no supported model recommendation here.

Why CPU usage may rise during a long stream

Duration alone does not establish a memory leak, overheating, a defective CPU, or any one cause. A long-running stream is a reason to observe when the symptom begins and compare resource use and output; it is not a diagnosis by itself. Use the preview-versus-output check, encoder dashboard, workload tests, and separate bandwidth check above to narrow down the cause.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, that is different from reducing CPU load while XSplit encodes a live PC scene. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer at home; each slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed.
