PRISM Live Studio Says “Video Format Is Unsupported”: How to Diagnose and Convert Files for YouTube

A PRISM format warning can refer to a local video, a camera or capture card, or YouTube’s incoming stream. Identify the failure point before converting anything.

First identify where the warning appears: when adding a local video as a PRISM Media Source, when selecting a camera or capture card, or in YouTube Live Control Room after you start streaming. Those are different failures. PRISM’s available guidance confirms that video files can be used as Media Sources, but does not publish a complete local-file codec and container compatibility list. So check the file’s actual media properties, convert a copy only if needed, and test it in PRISM before going live. A YouTube stream-format error, by contrast, concerns the outgoing stream—not automatically the file PRISM is reading.

Find which format error you have

Note the exact warning, when it appears, and whether the source is visible in PRISM’s preview. PRISM supports both video Media Sources and camera or capture-card inputs, while YouTube separately checks the stream it receives. See PRISM’s PC FAQ, its Windows guide, and YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance.

Where the warning appears What is being checked First thing to try
When adding or playing a local video in PRISM The file’s container and audio/video codecs, as interpreted by the installed PRISM version Inspect the file’s actual media properties and test a converted copy as a Media Source
When activating a camera or capture card The device’s available video formats, resolution and frame rate Return to Device Default, or try Video Format “Any” and a lower resolution or frame rate
In YouTube Live Control Room after starting The format of the outgoing live stream, including its protocol, video and audio settings Check PRISM’s live encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance for the selected protocol

A file container, a device’s video format and a live-stream protocol are different settings. Changing one will not necessarily fix a fault in another.

If PRISM rejects a local video file

PRISM’s FAQ confirms that video files can be added as Media Sources, but the available documentation does not specify every supported local-file container and codec combination. An MP4 extension alone therefore does not establish that PRISM can read the file; renaming the extension does not convert its contents.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check the source type. Confirm that you are adding a stored video as a Media Source, rather than trying to activate a camera or capture card. Record the warning and whether the source appears in the preview.
  2. Inspect the actual media properties. Use a media-information utility to identify the container, video codec and profile, audio codec, resolution and frame rate. Do not rely only on the filename extension.
  3. Keep the original and make a converted copy if needed. Choose an output preset documented for your installed PRISM version. The available PRISM material does not establish a universal conversion preset, so do not assume that any particular format is guaranteed to work.
  4. Test before going live. Add the copy as a Media Source in a scene and check both video and audio playback in the PRISM preview. If it still fails, compare its reported properties with the current documentation for your PRISM release rather than repeatedly changing the extension.

YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list MP4, H.264 video and several recommended audio options. Those are upload recommendations; they do not prove that a file is compatible with PRISM’s Media Source or define YouTube’s live-ingest requirements.

If the source is a camera or capture card

This is a device-format problem, not a request to convert a stored video. PRISM’s Windows guide notes that available formats depend on the selected device and can vary with output resolution. A custom resolution and frame-rate combination may be unsupported even if the device itself works.

  1. Open the affected capture-device source in PRISM and change its video format back to Device Default.
  2. If the warning remains, try video format Any, as PRISM’s guide suggests.
  3. If you selected a custom resolution or frame rate, lower one or both to a combination the camera or capture card supports.
  4. Leave color space and range at Default unless the hardware supports the HDR mode you selected.

Test the device preview after each change. A video conversion will not repair an unsupported capture-device resolution or frame rate.

If YouTube reports “Incorrect stream format”

This warning concerns the stream PRISM sends to YouTube. YouTube says the cause can involve the container, video codec or profile, or audio codec. Its guidance for the documented error recommends H.264 video and AAC audio; check the specific message and your encoder configuration rather than assuming the local source file itself must be converted. YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS video options including H.264, H.265 and AV1, and audio options including AAC and MP3, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate and codec, so use the current table on that page for your setup instead of copying an isolated bitrate.

YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its live-ingest settings apply to that outgoing stream; they are not a compatibility list for the local videos PRISM reads. If the error appears in YouTube after PRISM’s preview works, check the outgoing stream’s protocol and encoder settings separately from the source file.

Common causes and fixes

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next step
A local video fails when added or played in PRISM The file’s actual container or codecs, or compatibility with the installed PRISM version Inspect the media properties, use a version-documented preset for a copy, and test it in a scene
A camera or capture card fails after custom format changes An unsupported device resolution, frame rate or format Return to Device Default, try Any, or reduce resolution or frame rate
PRISM preview works, but YouTube reports a format error The outgoing stream’s container, codec, profile or audio settings Check the exact YouTube message and compare the encoder configuration with current protocol-specific guidance
The filename ends in a format that sounds compatible, but PRISM still rejects it The extension may not reflect the file’s actual container or codecs Inspect the media properties; renaming the file does not change its contents

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option from using PRISM as a local production tool. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.
