PRISM Live Studio is a Windows streaming app with production features, but YouTube’s published listing does not establish equivalent unattended playlist automation. Neither tool has a sourced reliability advantage; your choice depends on playlist behavior, production needs, and whether you want to run an encoder locally.

This is a workflow comparison, not a reliability ranking: there is no sourced head-to-head uptime test for PRISM Live Studio and FFmpeg.
What each option does—and does not establish
FFmpeg: direct control, more setup responsibility
FFmpeg is suited to a repeatable pipeline built around specific media inputs and output settings. Its documentation says, “Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop.” See the FFmpeg documentation. That option loops an input; it does not by itself establish a complete, tested playlist-to-YouTube configuration.
For multiple files, FFmpeg documents concatenation workflows. The concat demuxer has stream compatibility requirements, so do not assume arbitrary videos will join seamlessly. The FFmpeg FAQ notes that “FFmpeg has a concat filter designed specifically for that, with examples in the documentation.” The FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes the concat filter from the demuxer approach; choose based on the files and whether re-encoding is acceptable. Test the actual playlist for transition gaps, audio continuity, and stream behavior before relying on it unattended.

PRISM Live Studio: graphical production, playlist automation unconfirmed
YouTube’s encoder directory lists PRISM Live Studio for Windows and describes effects, drawing, virtual background, virtual camera, and mobile-app integration; the listed features are provided at no charge. The listing does not specify infinite playlist behavior, 24/7 operation, or crash recovery. Set up the YouTube side before choosing an encoder
- Enable live streaming. Verify the channel and activate live streaming in YouTube. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Match encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance and your chosen ingestion mode. YouTube’s settings guidance lists CBR and supported video codecs including H.264, HEVC, and AV1 in the applicable context. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Use settings your encoder and selected mode support; do not assume every combination applies to every stream. - Prefer encrypted delivery where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS. HLS is a separate ingestion option with its own requirements: YouTube’s HLS instructions specify a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. That is an ingestion constraint, not a limit on your prerecorded program playlist. See YouTube HLS ingestion guidance.
- Test and monitor. Preview before going public, check YouTube stream-health messages and audio/video quality, and leave upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate. The guidance is in YouTube’s encoder setup and live-streaming tips.
Build a reliable FFmpeg workflow
FFmpeg’s documented options are building blocks, not a turnkey 24/7 service. The exact command depends on input formats, codecs, output protocol, bitrate, and YouTube’s selected stream settings. Avoid copying an unverified command without testing it against the files and destination you will actually use.
Prepare and test the media
- Check that every playlist item has compatible streams for the chosen concat method. If they differ, normalize them or use a workflow that re-encodes as needed.
- Test the start, transition points, and return to the beginning of the loop. Listen for audio gaps and inspect video continuity.
- Run a long test with the target resolution, bitrate, computer, and network. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators rather than assuming a process that starts will remain healthy.
Plan for local failure and archiving
A local FFmpeg or PRISM stream depends on the computer staying powered, the encoder process continuing, and the network staying usable. YouTube notes that local encoders use the device’s processor and provide operator control; a local setup therefore needs a way to detect a stopped process or unhealthy stream and restart it. The reviewed sources do not establish automatic recovery for either app.

YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be preserved as a single archive. Plan separate recording or capture if you need a complete copy of the event. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Consider a cloud service if the computer should not run the stream
YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming without a dedicated PC. YouTube’s comparison explains that cloud encoders can reduce load on a local machine, while local encoders use local processing and offer control. The listing does not establish Gyre pricing, service limits, or recovery behavior; verify those details with the provider before choosing it. - The stream never starts: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the correct stream URL and key are in the encoder, and the selected ingestion mode matches the output. If the channel was just enabled, activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.
- Playlist transitions fail or break audio/video: Check stream compatibility for the concat workflow. Normalize mismatched files or use an appropriate re-encoding workflow, then test transitions with the real playlist.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check encoder settings, bitrate, and local upload capacity; leave bandwidth headroom and monitor YouTube’s audio/video diagnostics.
- The stream stops when unattended: A local setup depends on the machine, process, power, and network. Add process monitoring and a restart plan, or use a cloud service designed for prerecorded continuous streaming.
- A 24-hour event is not one archive: YouTube’s automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours. Arrange a separate capture if you need the full continuous program preserved.
Copyright and channel monetization are separate from encoder choice: only stream material you have the rights to use, and do not treat repeating a playlist as a guarantee of YouTube policy compliance.
