VLC’s playlist behavior is to continue to the next item when a media item stops, provided another item is queued. If it does not, first check that the next entry is actually in the playlist and that VLC was not explicitly stopped. A local-file error and a failure to open a YouTube live URL are different problems: the latter can result from YouTube changes that break VLC’s version-sensitive integration.
Check whether VLC can advance to the next item
- Open the playlist view. Confirm that the intended next video is listed after the item that failed. VLC cannot advance to an item that was never added to the playlist.
- Wait briefly after the error. Check whether playback is stopped or whether the next entry starts after a short delay. The VLC playlist API’s default stopped-media action is to continue when another item exists; its code comment says, “Continue (or stop if there is no next media), default behavior.” This describes the API’s default, not a guarantee that every error in every VLC release will recover identically.
- Check that playback was not explicitly stopped. If VLC was stopped rather than the current item simply ending or failing, start the next playlist entry manually and observe whether subsequent items advance.
A 2019 VideoLAN developer patch discussion addressed waiting between repeated playback errors under repeat or loop to avoid a rapid error cycle. It described delays of 100 ms, 200 ms, 400 ms, 800 ms, 1.6 seconds, then 3.2 seconds for further consecutive errors, with successful playback resetting the counter. Those are historical implementation details from that patch discussion, not a current setting you can rely on or adjust in every VLC build.
If the failed item is a local video file
- Open the file by itself in VLC. If it fails on its own, the problem is with opening that file, not with YouTube’s live-stream integration.
- Check that the playlist entry points to the intended file and location. A moved, renamed, unavailable, or unreadable file can leave the playlist pointing at the wrong item.
- After correcting the path or confirming the file is unavailable, return to the playlist and verify that the next item is still present. If VLC does not advance, select the next entry manually to distinguish a playlist-advancement issue from a file-opening issue.
If the failed item is a YouTube live URL
VLC’s ability to open YouTube URLs depends on an integration that can be affected when YouTube changes its transmission protocols. VideoLAN’s FAQ identifies protocol changes as a cause of some YouTube playback failures and recommends checking the VLC version. Update VLC, then consult VideoLAN’s current guidance for that installed version.
The FAQ also describes replacing VLC’s youtube.lua script, but those instructions are old and should not be treated as a guaranteed current fix. A January 6, 2026 VideoLAN developer-list discussion includes one contributor’s report that the script still worked for his YouTube live streams; that is an individual experience, not a compatibility promise. Direct YouTube live URL playback and automatic playlist advancement can vary by VLC version, and the reviewed VideoLAN documentation does not guarantee the complete workflow.

Use YouTube’s playlist loop when VLC compatibility is unreliable
If your priority is continuous playback of a YouTube playlist rather than using VLC specifically, YouTube documents looping a playlist in its own player. This avoids depending on VLC’s extraction of individual YouTube URLs, which can be affected by platform changes. Use YouTube’s player controls to loop the playlist, and check that the videos you need are included in that playlist.
