For a 1080p YouTube Live stream from VLC, start with H.264 at 10 Mbps for 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use RTMPS when your VLC build supports it, and copy the current ingestion URL and stream name from YouTube Studio. These are YouTube’s recommended targets, not guarantees: VLC’s available options and its RTMPS behavior vary by build and platform.
Choose settings for 1080p30 or 1080p60
Pick the frame rate that matches your source and that your computer and upload connection can sustain. A 60 fps stream can show motion more smoothly, but it requires more bitrate and encoding capacity than 30 fps.
| Output | H.264 minimum video bitrate | H.264 recommended video bitrate | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps | Use when the source is 30 fps or when your system or upload capacity cannot reliably sustain 60 fps. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | Use for 60 fps source footage when your encoder and upload connection can sustain the higher target. |
The minimums and recommended targets are YouTube’s H.264 guidance, accessed in 2026; they are not a promise that a particular VLC build or connection will deliver clean video. Start with the recommended bitrate for your chosen frame rate, then test and lower it if encoding or network conditions are unstable.
Encoder settings to target
- Video codec: H.264.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps.
- Video format: progressive scan and square pixels. For SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
- Advanced H.264 guidance: two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC.
These are targets, not VLC menu names guaranteed to appear in every version. Check the options exposed by your installed build rather than assuming a particular preset or control exists.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect VLC to the current YouTube stream
- Get the ingest details in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room for the stream and copy its current ingestion URL and stream name. Use the details for that stream rather than a saved destination that may no longer be current.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Do not paste it into public chats, screenshots or published instructions.
- Enter the destination in VLC’s stream output. Some encoders take the URL and stream name separately; others expect them combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the format your VLC output field supports. - Select RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. Its protocol comparison says RTMPS encrypts video, audio and control data in transit. RTMP supports H.264 too, but is not encrypted.
- Set the video and audio targets. Apply the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, keyframe, codec and audio values above wherever your build exposes those controls.
- Run a private or unlisted test before the event. Confirm the preview shows the expected picture, movement and audio, then inspect stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
YouTube’s protocol comparison, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, also describes HLS and DASH as encrypted options with other codec support; their segment-based delivery generally has greater latency. For a typical VLC encoder workflow, RTMPS is the practical target when the installed output supports it.
VLC version and platform differences
Do not assume every VLC installation has the same menus, codecs or network-output behavior. VLC’s official 3.0 documentation describes using FFmpeg AMF hardware encoders for network streaming and transcoding, and selecting FFmpeg in stream output. That is a specific workflow, not a universal VLC-to-YouTube recipe. The documentation also cautions that VLC 4.0 nightly builds may be unstable and says AMF was not backported to VLC 3.x in the described workflow.

If a setting is missing or RTMPS will not connect, verify the actual VLC build and platform, and check which URL format its output field expects. Do not infer that a codec or protocol is supported simply because another VLC version exposes it.
Test and troubleshoot the stream
VLC does not connect
- Confirm the ingestion URL and stream name are the current values shown for the YouTube stream.
- Check whether VLC expects the URL and stream name in separate fields or combined as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. - Verify that the selected VLC output supports the protocol you entered, especially if you chose RTMPS.
The stream connects, but YouTube reports poor health
- Compare the stream’s actual frame rate and bitrate with the 1080p30 or 1080p60 target you selected.
- If the connection or encoding machine cannot sustain the target, reduce the bitrate or choose 30 fps instead of 60 fps, then test again.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages for issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch or absent audio.
Preview has no sound or the wrong motion
- Check that audio is being sent and that the output uses AAC or MP3; verify the stereo settings if applicable.
- Compare the outgoing frame rate with the source and the selected YouTube target. Test with representative movement and audio before the live event.
YouTube advises checking upload speed, testing with representative content, and monitoring stream health and messages while streaming. A successful connection alone does not establish that the picture, sound or delivery quality is acceptable.
