Possibly—but the price alone cannot tell you whether a $5 VPS can sustain a YouTube stream around the clock. A VPS that only relays an already encoded stream has a different workload from one that encodes or transforms video. The main test is whether the specific plan can continuously deliver the required outbound traffic under its transfer limits, network policies and fair-use terms.
What the VPS has to do
Relaying an encoded stream
If another device or service creates the finished video stream, the VPS can act as a relay: it receives that stream and forwards it to YouTube. The nginx-rtmp-module documents the push directive for publishing a stream to a remote server. This is the lighter, simpler use case, but it still depends on a stable input and enough sustained outbound capacity.
Encoding or transforming video
Encoding, transcoding or compositing adds work beyond forwarding packets. The module’s exec_push directive can launch an external process such as FFmpeg, including for transcoding. Do not assume a VPS capable of relaying will also have enough CPU or other resources for those jobs; the available sources establish no universal CPU or RAM minimum for this setup.
Estimate the monthly traffic before choosing a plan
YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations include the bitrates below. The traffic figures are derived estimates for a constant video bitrate sent continuously for 24 hours a day over 30 days (2,592,000 seconds), using decimal units. They are not YouTube-published traffic statistics and exclude audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and other VPS traffic.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| YouTube H.264 setting | Recommended video bitrate | Approximate traffic per day | Approximate traffic per 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 5 Mbps | 54 GB | 1.62 TB |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 108 GB | 3.24 TB |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 129.6 GB | 3.89 TB |
These estimates use video bitrate alone: for example, 5 Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 gives 1.62 billion decimal bytes, or 1.62 TB. Budget additional capacity for audio and network overhead, and do not treat decimal TB as binary TiB. A plan with a low monthly transfer allowance may be unsuitable even if its advertised price is attractive.
YouTube’s recommended settings are not a guarantee that a VPS provider will deliver the bitrate continuously. Compare your estimate with the exact plan’s included outbound transfer and check its sustained network policy, throttling or overage terms, renewal price and route to the YouTube ingest endpoint. No named $5 plan or actual stream performance is established here.

Verify NGINX RTMP and the YouTube ingest details
Check the NGINX package
Do not assume a generic NGINX installation includes RTMP support. NGINX’s RTMP dynamic-module documentation directs administrators to check operating-system compatibility and describes installation through the NGINX Plus repository. That documentation does not establish that a distribution’s default community NGINX package contains the module. Verify the exact VPS image, package or build instructions before committing to the setup.
Use YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint and stream key
YouTube recommends RTMPS—RTMP secured with TLS. Its RTMPS ingest guide specifies the protocol, a valid YouTube host and application path, and port 443. Get the current server URL and stream key through YouTube’s Live Control Room and configure your relay with those values; do not guess or reuse an endpoint from an unrelated tutorial.

Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Avoid exposing a public publishing endpoint without access controls. The nginx-rtmp-module directives reference documents allow/deny controls, but it is project-level guidance rather than a complete hardened deployment recipe.
Set the encoder and test the whole path
- Choose the output format and bitrate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 720p30, 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. Pick a setting that the source can produce reliably and the VPS plan can carry within its transfer allowance.
- Configure rate control and keyframes. YouTube’s general encoder recommendations specify CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and a maximum interval of four seconds. Apply these settings at the encoder that creates the stream; a pure relay does not re-encode the video.
- Configure RTMPS. Use the endpoint and stream key shown in Live Control Room, following YouTube’s RTMPS requirements, including port 443.
- Test before relying on 24/7 operation. Send a representative sample with the expected motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; check for dropped frames, connection interruptions and audio problems.
- Test recovery and monitor usage. Confirm that the source can reconnect and that your relay behaves as expected after an interruption. Watch outbound transfer and any provider warnings or throttling during a representative run. The module documents a
push_reconnecttimeout of three seconds by default, but that directive alone does not establish end-to-end recovery or availability.
What a $5 price does—and does not—prove
A low monthly price does not establish that a plan has the transfer allowance, sustained throughput, suitable route, compatible NGINX package or support needed for your stream. Before buying, verify these details for the exact plan and region:

The cited documentation and bitrate recommendations do not provide a success rate, a universal VPS resource minimum or a benchmark for a particular $5 plan. Treat suitability as plan-specific and test the actual configuration rather than inferring reliability from price.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish exactly how YouTube handles one uninterrupted 24-hour event, so do not rely on a single continuous broadcast producing one complete archive. Check YouTube’s current live-stream guidance for your channel and plan how you will retain the source recording separately if an archive matters.
