First check where the Hindi text appears: in a local file name or path, in a YouTube video title, or in both. Those are different problems, and the available official guidance does not identify a Hindi-specific VLC bug. If VLC cannot play YouTube videos at all, update VLC first; if the affected items are local files, investigate their paths and playlist entries instead.
Identify what VLC is skipping
Look at the affected entry in VLC and determine whether it points to a file stored on your device or to a YouTube video. A Hindi title shown for a remote video is metadata; a path containing Devanagari characters points to a local-file or path-resolution issue. Also note whether the item remains visible in the playlist but fails to play, or does not appear at all.
- Local file: Check that the file exists at the path saved in the playlist and that the path is valid on the device running VLC.
- YouTube item: Check whether VLC can play other YouTube videos. If YouTube playback generally fails, use the YouTube troubleshooting steps below.
- Both: Test one local Hindi-named file and one remote YouTube item separately. Do not assume one failure explains the other.
The precise fix depends on your operating system, VLC version, playlist format, and whether the skipped item is local or remote.
If the skipped entries are local files with Hindi names
Check the saved paths
- In VLC, select an affected playlist entry and inspect its media information or properties to see the location VLC is trying to open.
- Confirm that the file exists at that exact location on the device running VLC. If the playlist was moved to another computer or folder, its saved paths may no longer resolve.
- Open the file directly in VLC, rather than through the playlist. If direct opening works but the playlist entry does not, the playlist path or format is a more likely place to investigate than YouTube playback.
- For a useful comparison, create a temporary playlist with one affected file and one file whose name uses Latin characters. Record the playlist format and whether each entry opens.
VideoLAN’s rolling VLC project NEWS history includes distinct historical entries for “Fix for invalid UTF-8 encoding of some filenames” and for opening DVD folders with non-ASCII characters. These entries show that filename-encoding and non-ASCII-path fixes have existed, but they do not establish a current Hindi-filename defect or identify a release that fixes this exact case. Read the VLC project NEWS history.

What to report if it still fails
- Your operating system and VLC version.
- The playlist format and whether the playlist was created on the same device.
- Whether the Hindi characters are in a local path, a displayed YouTube title, or both.
- Whether the file opens directly in VLC and whether other files in the playlist play.
These details help distinguish a missing or outdated path from a playback or filename-handling issue; the historical release-note entries alone cannot identify the cause.
If VLC cannot play the YouTube stream
VideoLAN’s VLC User Documentation says that changes to YouTube transmission protocols can make parts of VLC’s support obsolete. Its advice is to make sure VLC is up to date first. If YouTube playback still fails, the documentation describes replacing the YouTube playlist script. This is general YouTube playback guidance, not a fix for local files whose names contain Hindi characters. See VideoLAN’s YouTube playback guidance.

- Install the latest VLC version available for your operating system, then test the YouTube item again.
- If it still fails, download the
youtube.luafile from the VideoLAN location linked in the documentation. - Close VLC completely.
- Open the playlist-script directory listed in VideoLAN’s documentation for your operating system: Windows 64-bit, Windows 32-bit, macOS, 64-bit Linux, or 32-bit Linux.
- Remove any existing
youtube.luacand/oryoutube.luafrom that directory, then place the downloadedyoutube.luathere. - Restart VLC and test the YouTube item. Check the documentation for the current directory and script instructions for your operating system and VLC package; paths and YouTube behavior can change.
VideoLAN’s documentation explains that YouTube protocol changes can make VLC components obsolete and advises users to ensure they have the latest VLC version. Replacing the script is relevant only when the problem is YouTube playback; it does not demonstrate that the script controls how VLC reads a Hindi-named local file.
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | First check | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| A local Hindi-named file fails from the playlist | Confirm the saved path and try opening the file directly. | A path or playlist-resolution issue is distinct from YouTube playback. |
| YouTube items fail generally | Update VLC; if that does not help, follow VideoLAN’s script replacement guidance. | The issue may concern VLC’s YouTube playback support, not the language of a title. |
| A Hindi YouTube title appears but will not play | Test another YouTube item and determine whether YouTube playback fails generally. | A displayed title does not by itself show that a local filename or encoding problem is involved. |
| Only a playlist entry fails, while the same local file opens directly | Check the playlist’s saved location and format. | The playlist entry may not resolve to the file’s current path. |
