You can use VLC’s VLM feature to sequence playlist items and YouTube Live can accept an encoder feed over RTMPS, but the official documentation does not establish a tested, direct connection from a Raspberry Pi VLC playlist to YouTube. The practical route is to prepare and test the playlist on the Pi, then use an encoder setup verified to accept that feed and send it to YouTube. Treat any local handoff between VLC and the encoder as configuration-dependent, not a guaranteed recipe.
What the Raspberry Pi and VLC can do
VLC’s VideoLAN Manager (VLM) can sequence multiple inputs on one broadcast channel. VideoLAN’s documented example sends the resulting MPEG transport stream over HTTP so a client on the network can play it; it is not a YouTube ingest configuration. The example uses sout-keep to keep output active between playlist items and a caching option. See VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example.
VLC’s stream-output system can process supported input and send it to a file or network destination, but the reviewed documentation does not confirm that this particular VLM setup can deliver RTMPS to YouTube from a Raspberry Pi. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe a compatible encoder receiving the ingestion URL and stream key. You must verify the bridge between the playlist and that encoder with the software and Pi you intend to use.
Prepare VLC on Raspberry Pi OS
Install VLC if you use Raspberry Pi OS Lite
Raspberry Pi OS Desktop includes VLC. Lite does not include it by default; Raspberry Pi documents this installation command for playback without a desktop:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
sudo apt install --no-install-recommends vlc-bin vlc-plugin-base
The command-line VLC executable, cvlc, can play media without a GUI. Raspberry Pi also documents that VLC uses hardware acceleration in Raspberry Pi OS. That is a playback detail, not confirmation that a particular Pi can transcode a playlist or stream it to YouTube at a given resolution or frame rate. Consult Raspberry Pi OS’s audio and video documentation.
Test the media and playlist locally
- Put the media files on the Pi and confirm that VLC can open and play each one.
- Check that the playlist points to the correct files and that the items play in the order you expect.
- Test playback with the same VLC installation you plan to use for the live setup. Fix missing files or playback problems before adding a network output or encoder.
Understand the documented VLM playlist example
This VLM configuration illustrates how VLC sequences two inputs and exposes a local HTTP MPEG transport stream. Replace the example file paths with paths that exist on your Pi:

Save it as playlist.vlm and run the documented command:
vlc --vlm-conf=playlist.vlm
In VideoLAN’s example, a network client connects to http://<Pi-address>:8090/stream. This is a local-network broadcast example, not YouTube’s ingestion address; do not paste it into YouTube Live Control Room. The example demonstrates VLM playlist sequencing only, and does not establish that a separate encoder can consume this output correctly in your setup.

Get YouTube’s encoder details
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings.
- Reveal the RTMPS stream URL with the lock icon, then copy the URL into an encoder that supports YouTube RTMPS ingestion.
- Copy the stream key into that encoder as well. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Before going live publicly, verify that your chosen encoder can accept the VLC playlist output or another tested handoff and can send it to YouTube over RTMPS.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Its RTMPS help page explains how to retrieve the URL and key. Its RTMPS developer guide specifies port 443 and notes that the server hostname is needed for TLS SNI authentication.
Choose and verify the playlist-to-YouTube handoff
The missing piece is not the playlist or YouTube’s ingest settings; it is a compatible connection between them. VLC’s documented HTTP output and YouTube’s RTMPS ingest are separate capabilities. A local HTTP, UDP, or other handoff, or a separate encoder, may be a candidate, but the exact configuration depends on the software and hardware. Do not assume that the VLM command above sends directly to YouTube.

Before relying on a setup, check that the selected encoder can consume the chosen VLC output, supports YouTube RTMPS, and can perform any required processing for the media. Test the complete path on the target Pi and software versions before scheduling an event. The available documentation does not establish model-specific Pi performance, a supported resolution or frame rate for this chain, or a guaranteed 24/7 operating result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When HLS may be relevant
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, particularly for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. This is an alternative protocol for encoders that support it, not evidence that VLC on Raspberry Pi supports HLS for this playlist workflow. YouTube’s HLS setup requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

Troubleshoot connection problems
- YouTube reports an SSL or connection error: Check that the encoder is using the RTMPS URL, not an RTMP URL, and that it supports RTMPS. Verify the host and scheme; YouTube’s guidance points to port 443 when needed.
- The encoder connects but receives no playlist: Check the handoff separately from YouTube ingest. Confirm the VLM process is running, the media paths are valid, and the local output is reachable from the encoder. The documented
http://<Pi-address>:8090/streamexample is for a network client, not an RTMPS endpoint. - Items fail to play or the sequence stops: Test every playlist file locally and recheck its path. The VLM example uses
sout-keepto keep output from breaking when one item ends; this does not prove a complete YouTube bridge will remain connected. - The video or audio is unsuitable: Verify the media and processing behavior through the encoder you selected. The reviewed documentation does not establish a target bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or Pi model capacity for this chain, so do not assume a particular quality without testing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is an alternative to a Raspberry Pi and encoder chain. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud service loops the uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
