The local options are not proven to be smooth on every low-power PC. OBS documents Windows, macOS, and Linux support, and says hardware decoding can be used when available for supported media and suitable hardware; that is not a system requirement or a guarantee of performance. No comparative CPU, electricity, uptime, or failure-rate measurements establish a universal winner.
Set up OBS for a local loop
Loop one video with Media Source
- Install OBS Studio for your operating system and open the scene you will use for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source and browse to the video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. Check audio settings and confirm the video appears at the intended size in the preview.
- Configure YouTube as the stream destination, then test the complete stream before leaving it running. Keep OBS open and the PC powered for the duration of a local broadcast.
Play a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC, matching the architecture of OBS: OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, select + in Sources, choose VLC Video, and add the files in the order you want them played.
- Review the VLC Video properties. OBS documentation says Loop Playlist is enabled by default; verify it is enabled for your intended behavior.
- Preview the playlist from start to finish, including transitions between files and audio. Then start the YouTube stream and monitor its health.
OBS Project documentation distinguishes the playlist-capable VLC Video source from Media Source, describing the former as allowing “a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” The page is dated 2022-01-11; check the properties in your installed version, since labels and behavior may change.
Use FFmpeg when command-line control is a better fit
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping (“Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop”). It is a media-processing pipeline, not a guided playlist-and-broadcast interface. You must decide how to represent your input or sequence, handle the codecs, and send the stream to YouTube. The exact command depends on the media and output settings; do not assume one generic command is safe for every file or connection.

As with OBS, the PC must remain on while FFmpeg runs. Test the actual encode or stream pipeline with your chosen files and monitor for errors before relying on a continuous broadcast. If command-line configuration is unfamiliar, OBS provides a graphical route; if leaving the PC on is the problem, a hosted service is a different trade-off.
Prepare YouTube Live before starting a 24/7 stream
Check eligibility and content rights
- YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its Help page also says streamers must be at least 16 years old.
- Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A looping format does not exempt music, gameplay footage, or other material from copyright or reused-content policies. Only stream material you have the rights to use, and review YouTube’s rules for your channel and content.
Match encoder settings to the connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and specifies CBR, a keyframe interval of two seconds (not exceeding four seconds), and support for H.264, H.265, or AV1 ingest options, with up to 60 fps. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not predictions that a low-power PC can encode those settings.

- Choose an output resolution and frame rate your source and machine can sustain; lower them if the encoder struggles.
- Check upload capacity with a speed test, as YouTube recommends, and leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s best-case result.
- Use the stream key and server details shown in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in shared commands or screenshots.
- Test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

Test your actual low-power PC before committing
- Run the exact video or playlist at the output resolution and frame rate you intend to use.
- Check CPU and GPU load, dropped frames, audio continuity, and whether the machine remains responsive during playback and streaming. These are your own system measurements, not a published benchmark for OBS or FFmpeg.
- Test upload stability over a meaningful period and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicator.
- Confirm what happens after a file ends, a playlist reaches its last item, a network interruption occurs, or the PC sleeps or reboots. Disable sleep for a local 24/7 run and plan how you will restart the software after a crash or power loss.
- Repeat the test after changing encoder, resolution, frame rate, or media files; each can change the load and bandwidth needs.

Can a YouTube stream keep running if my PC is off?
