To protect a YouTube channel, secure the Google Account behind it—and every Google Account with channel access. For Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and Apple services, use each provider’s own sign-in, recovery, and device controls; their settings are not interchangeable. Use a unique password for each account, enable the strongest available second step, keep recovery options current, and check for unfamiliar devices or channel users.
Secure the Google Account behind your YouTube channel
YouTube channel access is tied to Google Accounts. A strong channel-security routine therefore starts with the Google sign-in and includes every person who can access the channel. YouTube recommends scanning for malware, using a passkey for two-step verification, and making a recovery plan. YouTube’s channel-security guidance explains these protections and risks.
Choose a phishing-resistant second step
Google describes passkeys as its strongest phishing-protection option among the sign-in methods covered in YouTube’s guidance. A compatible physical security key is another strong option. Google prompts are described as stronger than SMS verification codes; phone codes and printed or downloaded backup codes are less secure options. These are relative protections, not guarantees that an account cannot be compromised.
Google Safety Center explains that passkeys use the same public-key cryptographic protocols as physical security keys, making them resistant to phishing, credential stuffing, and other remote attacks. If you face elevated risk of targeted attacks, consider whether Google’s Advanced Protection Program is appropriate. Google says enrollment requires a passkey or security key. A physical FIDO security key is optional: confirm that it works with your accounts and devices, and understand the recovery requirements before relying on one.
Use separate credentials and protect recovery
- Use a strong, distinct password for every service. A trusted password manager can help create and store unique credentials; Google and Disney+ both recommend password-management tools or features.
- Keep the recovery email address and phone number current. Before replacing a phone or security key, make sure you have a working fallback method and know how account recovery works.
- Do not share a Google password with channel collaborators. Give each person their own access and require two-step verification on every Google Account that can reach the channel.
- Review who has channel access and remove people who no longer need it. YouTube’s account-security guidance calls out channel permissions, unique passwords, recovery information, and two-step verification.
Reduce malware and phishing risk
Be wary of unexpected sponsorship, brand-deal, or account-warning messages that ask you to sign in, open an attachment, or download a file. Check a link’s destination before opening it, and do not install an alleged update from an untrusted source. YouTube warns that suspicious links, untrusted downloads, and fake software updates can expose creators to malware. Keep your device software updated and scan for malware; antivirus software can help with device threats, but it does not replace strong sign-in protection.

Protect accounts on other streaming services
Use the same baseline—unique password, strong available second step, current recovery channels—but follow each provider’s own instructions. The controls and names differ by service, so do not assume one provider’s sign-out or recovery process exists on another.

What to do if you suspect an account has been compromised
Use the service’s official app or type its official website address yourself rather than following a link in an unexpected message. Act promptly, then check the recovery routes and devices so an intruder cannot simply regain access.

- Change or reset the password. Use the provider’s official account or recovery flow. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on every affected service to a different password.
- Remove access you do not recognize. Review signed-in devices and sessions, remove unfamiliar devices, or use the provider’s all-device sign-out option where available. Disney+ and Netflix document all-device sign-out; do not assume other services offer the same control.
- Check recovery details. Confirm that recovery email addresses, phone numbers, and other security details still belong to you. Replace anything you do not recognize and make sure you can access the updated recovery channels.
- Review YouTube channel permissions. Check every Google Account with access, remove unfamiliar or unnecessary users, and secure each remaining account with two-step verification.
- Secure the device as well as the account. If you opened a suspicious download or update, scan the device for malware and remove untrusted software. Reset account credentials from a device you believe is safe.
- Follow provider recovery instructions if locked out. Apple directs users who cannot reset a password to account recovery. For other services, use the official help flow for that provider.
