What happens depends on whether you are streaming from the camera or capturing the phone screen, and on your Android version and phone manufacturer. For screen capture, Streamlabs says the app is effectively suspended in the background and cannot render content inside another app. You can test Android’s Unrestricted battery setting, but it is not a confirmed fix.
First identify what kind of stream you are running
Streamlabs’ Android guide describes camera streaming and gameplay or screen streaming as separate workflows. The distinction matters: the FAQ’s screen-off-related statement applies specifically to screen capture and rendering. It does not establish that every camera stream stops when the display locks, nor does the guide promise that a camera stream will continue.
Streamlabs’ Mobile Streaming FAQ states: “When screen capturing, the app is in the background and effectively suspended so it can’t render things inside of another app.” In practical terms, do not assume you can lock the phone and keep capturing gameplay through Streamlabs. The reviewed Mobile Live Streaming Guide does not document a screen-off switch or guarantee background continuation for either workflow.
Try Android’s battery setting, but treat it as a test
Android offers three battery-use states for apps: Unrestricted, Optimized, and Restricted. Unrestricted allows all background work and may use more battery; Restricted fully prevents background execution. Android also cautions that the precise background restrictions depend on the phone manufacturer, so setting names, locations, and behavior vary by device. - Open your Android system settings and find Streamlabs Mobile under the app or battery settings. The precise menu path differs by manufacturer and Android version.
- Open the app’s battery-use setting. If available, choose Unrestricted rather than Optimized or Restricted.
- Start the same type of stream you intend to use, lock the display, and check from another device whether video and audio continue.
- Wake the phone and inspect Streamlabs’ preview or status. If the stream stopped, the setting did not solve the issue on your device.
Unrestricted permits background work; it does not override every app or device behavior and is not an official Streamlabs screen-off fix. Expect potentially higher battery use.
Run a low-stakes test before relying on it
Test with a short private or otherwise low-stakes broadcast using the same stream type and lock behavior you plan to use. Monitor the stream from another device rather than relying only on what the phone shows after waking. Confirm that both picture and sound continue, and note whether the stream ends or only the local preview changes. Repeat after changing one setting at a time so you can tell whether it made a difference.

Before broadcasting, Streamlabs recommends closing other apps and disabling notifications to reduce interruptions and potential lag or crashes. These steps may help avoid other problems, but they do not establish that the app will keep running with the display off.
What other Streamlabs features and accessories can—and cannot—do
- A powerbank: Streamlabs lists one as an optional way to get additional battery for mobile streaming. It supplies power; it does not prevent Android from suspending an app.
- Network Boost: Streamlabs describes this as a connection-reliability feature. Its Network Boost guide does not claim that it enables screen-off continuation.
- Disconnect Protection: A connection-recovery feature is not evidence that Streamlabs can continue rendering screen capture while suspended.
Common problems and what to check
The stream ends when you lock the phone
For screen capture, this is consistent with Streamlabs’ description of the app being effectively suspended in the background. Try Unrestricted battery use as a diagnostic step, then repeat the low-stakes test. There is no documented setting that guarantees screen-off operation.

The camera stream behaves differently from gameplay capture
Do not assume the screen-capture FAQ describes camera streaming. The reviewed guide covers both workflows but does not promise that a camera stream remains active with the display locked. Test the camera workflow separately on your own phone.
The setting is missing or has a different name
Android menus vary because device manufacturers determine precise background restrictions. Search system settings for Streamlabs’ battery use or app battery settings; consult your phone maker’s guidance if the option is absent. A setting labelled Unrestricted is not a guarantee of successful streaming.

The stream drops even while the display stays on
That is a different problem from screen-off suspension. Check the connection and Streamlabs’ connection-related options separately. Network Boost addresses connection reliability, not the phone’s ability to keep a screen-capture app running in the background.
You need more runtime, not a locked display
A powerbank can provide additional battery, as Streamlabs notes, but it will not resolve background suspension. Keep the distinction clear when choosing a workaround.
