If the picture is sharp but playback stalls, investigate buffering and the hotspot instead. There is no single best resolution or cache value for every phone, video and location.
First identify the problem: blur, buffering, or both
- Consistently soft picture, smooth playback: Check the quality selected in YouTube and whether the original video is available at a higher resolution.
- Sharp picture that repeatedly stops: The connection may not be keeping up with the selected stream, or other devices may be using the hotspot.
- Blur and stalls together: YouTube may be adjusting quality to viewing conditions. Test a lower resolution for stability, then compare the same video in YouTube’s app or at youtube.com.
YouTube says it changes stream quality based on viewing conditions, including connection speed, player or screen size, the original upload and browser support. Its Android quality controls and troubleshooting guidance are documented in YouTube Help and YouTube’s playback troubleshooting steps.
Choose YouTube quality for the connection you have
In YouTube’s Android app, open the video, tap Settings → Quality, and choose an option. The label or exact options can vary by app version and video.

These choices are not a promise that a given resolution will work on every Indian 4G connection. Google YouTube Help recommends a connection speed of at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming; that is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee for every hotspot, video or playback setup. Test VLC only after checking YouTube playback
- Play the same video in YouTube’s app or at youtube.com. Set Quality manually and see whether the picture is still blurry or playback still stalls.
- Compare VLC with YouTube under the same conditions. If YouTube is sharp and stable but VLC is not, the difference may be in how that playback path handles the stream. YouTube recommends its app or website as a troubleshooting comparison.
- Try another connection if available. If the same problem follows the hotspot across apps, reduce other devices’ network use and check signal and coverage at your location. Those checks can help distinguish a connection constraint from an app-specific issue; they do not identify a particular carrier or plan as the cause.
- Check the source video. If the video was uploaded only at low resolution, selecting a higher quality cannot create detail that is not in the upload.
VideoLAN says VLC for Android supports network stream formats including HLS and DASH, but format support does not establish that every YouTube URL will work or that VLC will behave like YouTube’s adaptive player. See the VLC for Android page.
Adjust VLC for Android network caching cautiously
VLC’s network caching buffers network media. VideoLAN says caching can reduce buffering on a slow connection, while a larger caching value adds waiting time before playback. It is a stability-versus-delay control, not a picture-quality control.

- In VLC for Android, open Settings → Advanced → Network caching. The precise menu presentation may vary by app version.
- Change the value only if you have recurring buffering in VLC. Test a small increase, then play and seek through the same video.
- If playback starts or resumes too slowly, reduce the value or clear it to return to the default.
VideoLAN describes this Advanced setting for software decoding and does not publish a universal best millisecond value for all devices and connections. Its VLC for Android 3.5 Advanced settings documentation also describes frame skip as a performance option, but warns that it lowers video quality. Since the complaint here is low picture quality, frame skip is not a sensible first fix.
India-specific checks when the hotspot remains unreliable
- Try playback in a place with a stronger or more consistent mobile signal, then compare again. The relevant YouTube guidance does not identify a best Indian carrier, plan or location.
- Pause downloads and reduce other devices’ use of the hotspot while testing; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends minimizing other devices connected to the network.
- If the video is eligible for offline viewing, downloading it over a suitable connection may avoid playback interruptions later. YouTube Help says offline downloads are available in India for qualifying videos; shows and movies for purchase are excluded. Higher-quality downloads use more data and storage, and availability depends on the video and feature eligibility. See YouTube Help on offline viewing.
