CameraFi Live has no single fixed data-use figure: your phone’s outgoing stream bitrate and how long you broadcast determine the total. As a quick estimate, each sustained 1 Mbps uses about 0.45 decimal GB per hour before network overhead. Multiply your total bitrate—including audio—by 0.45, then by the number of hours.
Estimate data use from bitrate and duration
The estimate is based on the data your phone sends to YouTube, not the quality at which viewers watch. YouTube transcodes a live stream into different playback formats for viewers; those formats do not change the phone’s outgoing bitrate calculation. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists recommended video rates and a separate audio rate.
At a constant 1 Mbps, the arithmetic is 1,000,000 bits per second ÷ 8 × 3,600 seconds = 450,000,000 bytes per hour, or 0.45 decimal GB. For an estimate, use the total outgoing rate, including audio:
Estimated data in GB = total bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 × hours streamed

For example, a 4 Mbps total stream lasting three hours is approximately 4 × 0.45 × 3 = 5.4 GB before overhead.

These are calculated decimal-GB estimates, not measurements of CameraFi Live on a phone or of a carrier’s billing. Actual device or carrier totals can differ because of protocol overhead, changing bitrate, reconnects, mobile-data accounting, and other app activity.

How much data do YouTube resolution and frame-rate settings use?
YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, combined here with its separately recommended 128 Kbps stereo audio rate, give these approximate outgoing totals. The hourly figures are calculations from those recommendations, not measured CameraFi Live usage. Available choices may differ by phone and CameraFi Live version.

YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Higher resolution or frame rate generally calls for a higher recommended bitrate, which raises estimated data use. These examples are not guarantees that every phone or CameraFi Live version offers the listed settings.

Choose a bitrate that fits your mobile connection
Lowering bitrate reduces data use, but trades away visual detail; there is no best setting for every phone, scene, or network. CameraFi Live advises checking upload speed rather than download speed and setting bitrate at about 75% of the available upload speed. Its guidance also cautions that platform server conditions can affect results. CameraFi Live’s mobile streaming advice is dated July 15, 2021.
- Check upload speed at the place and time you intend to stream. A speed test is a snapshot, so leave margin for fluctuations.
- Include audio when estimating the total bitrate. If the app presents video bitrate separately, add the audio rate before applying the formula.
- CameraFi recommends using one network connection rather than keeping Wi-Fi and mobile data enabled together, to avoid a connection switch disrupting the stream.
- CameraFi says supported resolution and frame rate vary by device; confirm the available choices on your own phone. CameraFi Live’s official product page describes its mobile streaming app.
- Test with representative audio and movement before an important broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live.
Plan a data allowance for a long broadcast
Multiply the estimated hourly amount by the planned duration, then allow for overhead and any non-stream phone activity. For a three-hour event, for example, a total bitrate of 6 Mbps gives an estimate of 8.1 GB before overhead; at 10 Mbps, it is 13.5 GB. If your plan has a data cap, budget above the arithmetic estimate rather than treating it as a guaranteed carrier-metered total.
