Owncast itself is open-source software; the recurring costs come mainly from the VPS and the network traffic needed to deliver video to viewers. Optional S3-compatible object storage can shift some delivery traffic away from the VPS, but adds a separate bill. A current provider price anchor is DigitalOcean’s advertised VPS starting price of $4 per month; that is a server-price floor, not proof that the cheapest plan can handle your encoding and audience.
One important distinction: Owncast is a self-hosted live video streaming and chat server, not a YouTube hosting product. If you mean using a VPS to run your own Owncast service, the estimates below explain the infrastructure cost. If your goal is instead to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, see the cloud option below.
What you are paying for
Owncast describes its project as a self-hosted live video streaming and chat server. The software is open source, so the main recurring cost is the infrastructure you choose to run it on, not an Owncast software subscription. A typical estimate should account for:
- VPS: The server’s monthly price, CPU allocation, memory, and included transfer allowance.
- Outbound traffic: Video sent from the server to viewers. This grows with bitrate, stream duration, and concurrent viewers.
- Optional object storage: An S3-compatible service can serve video to viewers and reduce viewer-facing load on the VPS, but storage and delivery charges still apply.
- Broadcaster internet: Your upload connection to the VPS is a separate household or business cost, not part of the VPS bill.
Owncast’s requirements guide puts the uncertainty plainly: “It is impossible to give a single answer about what the requirements are for you to run Owncast, or what it will cost.” The right estimate depends on encoding settings, bitrate, hours streamed, concurrent audience, server region, and delivery design. Current VPS price anchors
DigitalOcean’s current pricing page, accessed in 2026, advertises shared CPU Droplets from $4 per month. Its Premium shared CPU tier starts at $7 per month for 1 GB memory, 1 vCPU, 25 GB NVMe storage, and 1,000 GB transfer; CPU-Optimized Droplets start at $42 per month. These are provider-published prices, not an Owncast minimum or a guarantee that a configuration will suit a particular stream. Check the provider’s live terms and plan details before buying.
The $4 starting figure is best treated as a low-cost server-line-item anchor for experiments. Do not assume it includes enough CPU for multiple transcoded outputs or enough transfer for a large audience.

| Bitrate | 10 viewers | 25 viewers | 50 viewers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 kbps | 18 GB | 45 GB | 90 GB |
| 4,000 kbps | 36 GB | 90 GB | 180 GB |
| 6,000 kbps | 54 GB | 135 GB | 270 GB |
These are Owncast traffic estimates, not provider bills. For example, four two-hour events at 4,000 kbps and 25 concurrent viewers work out to 360 GB using the published estimate of 90 GB per event. Multiply your own per-event estimate by events per month, then compare it with the included transfer allowance for your exact plan and region.

Check peak network capacity separately
A monthly traffic allowance does not tell you whether the server can sustain the live stream’s peak output. Owncast’s throughput estimate is bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. At 5,000 kbps, 200 viewers imply about 1,000 Mbps under that formula. Owncast says most VPS providers offer 1 Gbps ports and gives roughly 200 viewers at that bitrate as an estimate; actual plan limits and network overhead can reduce usable capacity. Owncast requirements
CPU costs depend on transcoding
Owncast uses CPU to transcode a stream into output qualities. Producing more qualities, or using more demanding compression settings, increases encoding work. Passthrough uses little CPU, while heavier encoding may need more headroom. Owncast’s rough performance examples are not guarantees: codec, bitrate, resolution, preset, and host hardware all matter. Test the exact configuration you plan to run rather than treating a VPS price as a performance promise. Owncast performance documentation

Traffic allowances vary by region
Do not compare VPS prices without checking the transfer allowance for the location you will actually use. Hetzner’s official traffic page lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX, and CAX cloud plans. For US locations, listed allowances range from 1–5 TB; for Singapore, they range from 0.5–5 TB, depending on plan. The page also lists an overage charge for some products. Confirm the selected plan’s current allowance, port speed, and overage terms. Hetzner traffic documentation

Server location matters beyond traffic pricing: distance between the server and viewers can contribute to buffering. The cheapest region is not automatically the best choice if most of your audience is elsewhere.

Testing or a very small audience
Use a low advertised VPS starting price only as the server-cost floor. Before relying on it, check whether the plan can handle your chosen stream configuration and whether its transfer allowance covers your expected viewing hours.
Light production with passthrough or one output
Compare a modest shared-CPU plan’s processing capacity and included traffic with your bitrate, event hours, and peak concurrent viewers. Passthrough can keep CPU needs low, but it does not reduce the viewer-driven traffic calculation.

Multiple qualities or heavier encoding
Budget for additional CPU headroom and validate performance with your intended codec, resolution, bitrate, and encoding preset. DigitalOcean’s advertised $42-per-month CPU-Optimized starting price is one pricing reference, not an Owncast requirement or a promise that a particular stream will work.
Growing audience or limited VPS transfer
Compare direct VPS delivery with an object-storage design. Owncast supports S3-compatible storage as a way to move viewer delivery away from the VPS; include the storage provider’s storage and bandwidth or egress charges in your comparison. The cost is shifted, not erased, and the available figures do not establish that object storage is always cheaper. Owncast performance documentation
A practical cost checklist
Before choosing a plan, write down these inputs and compare them against the provider’s current regional terms:
- Monthly VPS price, vCPU type, and memory.
- Stream bitrate and duration per event, plus events per month.
- Expected peak concurrent viewers and the resulting outbound throughput.
- Included outbound transfer, sustained port capacity, and any overage charge.
- Server location relative to the broadcaster and audience.
- Whether Owncast will transcode multiple output qualities.
- Any object-storage capacity and delivery charges.
- Broadcaster upload speed, kept separate from the server’s viewer-facing traffic.
For the broadcaster’s connection, Owncast recommends wired Ethernet and says upload speed should be at least 1.5 times the streaming bitrate to allow for fluctuations and overhead. Its example target for a 5,000 kbps stream is 7.5 Mbps. This is upload from the broadcaster to the VPS, not VPS-to-viewer egress. Owncast requirements
Or let it run in the cloud
If “for YouTube” means keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel around the clock, Owncast is a different kind of product: it is a self-hosted live streaming server. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. India-based customers can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo or the plans and pricing, then start the free first day.
