Owncast’s suggested settings and YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations differ—even at the same resolution and frame rate. Choose settings for each destination, then make sure your encoder, upload connection and Owncast server can sustain them.
Owncast and YouTube bitrate recommendations
Use the figures below as destination-specific guidance, not interchangeable targets. Owncast’s table describes suggested settings for a broadcast sent to an Owncast server. YouTube’s table describes recommended H.264 ingest bitrates for YouTube Live.
Owncast suggested broadcast settings
| Resolution | Frame rate | Owncast suggested bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1080 | 60 fps | 5000 kbps |
| 1920×1080 | 30 fps | 4500 kbps |
| 1280×720 | 60 fps | 4000 kbps |
| 1280×720 | 30 fps | 3000 kbps |
These are Owncast’s suggestions, not a guarantee for a particular server or a YouTube recommendation. Owncast notes that higher resolution requires more bitrate and higher frame rates use more encoding power. Match what you send to what your Owncast server can provide to viewers. Owncast broadcasting settings
YouTube H.264 ingest recommendations
| YouTube ingest resolution | Frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p | 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p | 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 240p–720p | 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube lists separate minimum and maximum ranges for AV1 and H.265; those ranges are not the H.264 recommendations in this table. YouTube normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. Manual resolution selection is available with a custom stream key when manual settings are enabled. YouTube encoder settings

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a practical starting point
If bandwidth or server capacity is limited
Start at 720p30 and test the full path before raising resolution or frame rate. This is a practical starting example, not a universal optimum: the encoder, available upload bandwidth and Owncast server all affect whether a stream remains stable.
If you want 1080p60
Owncast’s suggested input bitrate for 1080p60 is 5000 kbps, while YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for H.264 ingest at 1080p60. One bitrate does not satisfy both published recommendations. If you want to send to both destinations, use encoder or relay software that supports the required dual-output workflow and separate destination settings where needed.

Configure the Owncast RTMP destination
- Change the default stream key. Set a private key in Owncast’s admin before broadcasting. Treat it as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your server.
- Enter the Owncast server address in your encoder. The default RTMP port is TCP 1935, and Owncast accepts streams on the
/live/path. - Set the endpoint and key in the fields your encoder provides. If it has separate fields, use
rtmp://yourserver:1935/liveas the server and enter the key separately. If it has only one field, append the key to the path, for examplertmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key. - Start with a supported resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Use Owncast’s suggested values as a reference, then test that the server can process the stream and deliver its configured outputs.
Owncast’s OBS instructions use the Custom service option, the Owncast RTMP URL and the stream key configured in Owncast’s admin. The default admin password and default stream key may happen to share a value, but they are separate settings; change both. Owncast OBS instructions
Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Confirm that your chosen encoder or relay supports the protocol required by each destination. YouTube states, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Video codec: Owncast recommends H.264 for broad compatibility. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 as supported video codecs in its encoder guidance; its bitrate table’s recommended figures are specifically for H.264.
- Audio codec: Owncast recommends AAC for broad compatibility. YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds; Owncast also recommends two seconds.
- Picture format: YouTube’s advanced settings specify square pixels and progressive scan.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. A 60 fps target uses more encoding resources than 30 fps, so use it only when the source and server can sustain it.
In OBS, the keyframe interval is entered in seconds. In FFmpeg, the -g option counts frames: for a two-second interval, use 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. See Owncast’s FFmpeg example.

Send to Owncast and YouTube at the same time
Owncast’s documented broadcast setup describes an encoder sending to Owncast; its cited documentation does not describe Owncast automatically forwarding that incoming stream to YouTube. YouTube separately provides encoder ingest settings. To broadcast to both, configure two destinations in encoder or relay software that supports the dual-output workflow you need. Verify that it can send to both services and, if necessary, use destination-specific bitrate settings rather than assuming one output configuration fits both.
Check capacity before raising quality
Encoder and upload connection
Higher resolution, frame rate and bitrate place greater demands on the encoder and the broadcaster’s upload connection. Test the intended settings under real operating conditions and leave enough upload headroom for a stable connection; a bitrate that matches a recommendation on paper is not useful if the connection cannot sustain it.

Owncast server processing and outbound traffic
Owncast advises against sending a source at substantially higher quality than the server’s outputs can handle: extra conversion work uses server resources. Its quality guide recommends starting with a single output, testing hardware performance, then adding output variants only if the machine can handle them. Slow transcoding can delay delivery and contribute to buffering. Owncast video quality guide
Server outbound demand grows with the combined bitrate delivered to viewers. CPU use also depends on transcoding; Owncast’s examples vary by codec, bitrate, resolution and encoder preset, so there is no universal CPU-per-viewer figure. Check your machine’s processing and network capacity against your expected outputs and audience rather than relying on a single rule of thumb. Owncast server requirements

Common problems and fixes
- Owncast does not receive the broadcast: Check that the server address uses the correct host and port, that the path is
/live, and that the stream key matches the value in Owncast’s admin. Confirm TCP port 1935 is reachable if using the default RTMP configuration. - The encoder connects but the stream is unstable: Reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test again. Check both the broadcaster’s upload capacity and the server’s ability to process and deliver the chosen stream.
- Viewers experience buffering after you add output variants: Transcoding additional resolutions or formats increases processing work. Return to a single output and assess server performance before adding variants again.
- YouTube reports a bitrate mismatch: Confirm you are comparing against YouTube’s recommendation for the correct resolution, frame rate and codec. Do not use Owncast’s bitrate table as if it were YouTube’s H.264 ingest table.
- YouTube’s manual resolution setting is unavailable: YouTube’s guidance says manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled; otherwise, resolution and frame rate are normally detected automatically.
Do you need additional hardware or hosting?
The documented RTMP configuration does not require a particular physical product: it uses streaming software and server settings. A capture card is relevant only if your video source is an external camera or another device that needs capture hardware. Owncast’s FFmpeg documentation discusses device capture, but does not make a capture card mandatory or endorse a particular model.
Self-hosting does require a server with adequate CPU and network capacity for the stream and its outputs. Owncast documents provider installation options, but the right server depends on your workload and audience. Owncast provider installation options
