You can install it, expose its web and RTMP ports, and run it as a systemd service that starts at boot and restarts after a process crash. To broadcast on YouTube as well, you need a separate, verified encoder or relay that sends video to YouTube using YouTube’s own stream URL and key. The Owncast and YouTube documentation describe those destinations separately; they do not establish a built-in Owncast-to-YouTube relay.
Understand the stream path before installing anything
Owncast is a destination for an encoder: broadcasting software sends a feed to Owncast’s RTMP endpoint, and Owncast makes the stream available through its own viewing service. YouTube is a separate destination that requires an encoder configured with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key.
| Destination | What sends video there | Documented connection |
|---|---|---|
| Owncast on your Ubuntu server | A compatible encoder, such as broadcasting software or FFmpeg | rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key; some encoders take the key in a separate field |
| YouTube | An encoder configured for YouTube | YouTube’s stream URL and key, obtained in Live Control Room |
These are not two steps of a proven relay. The available Owncast and YouTube setup instructions establish how to publish to each service, but not how to take an Owncast feed and forward it to YouTube continuously. If your goal is a YouTube broadcast, do not assume that entering YouTube credentials in Owncast—or installing Owncast alone—will make that happen. Before relying on a separate bridge, confirm its exact input and output, reconnect behavior, whether it re-encodes video, and how its process is kept running.
What you need for the Ubuntu Owncast server
- An Ubuntu machine or server that can remain online, with a Linux release of Owncast matching its CPU architecture.
- FFmpeg available on the system. The Owncast quick installer can download FFmpeg if it is missing; for a manual installation, install it if needed.
- Inbound access to TCP port 8080 for the web interface and TCP port 1935 for RTMP ingest. Allow the required traffic in both the host firewall and, for a cloud server, the provider’s firewall.
- A dedicated, non-root account to run the service, plus a strong, unique admin password and stream key.
- Enough sustained outbound network capacity for your viewers. A running process alone does not ensure that the server, network, or hosting provider stays available.
Install Owncast on Ubuntu
Choose the installation route
Use the Owncast Linux release that matches the server’s architecture. The project provides a quick installer that downloads the current platform build and can fetch FFmpeg if it is absent. Owncast recommends inspecting a remote installer script before running it and does not recommend running the installer as root. Alternatively, follow the project’s manual release instructions, install FFmpeg if required, and use the matching release archive. Because release filenames and installation steps can change, use the current Owncast instructions for the download rather than copying an old filename or version into a long-lived server setup.

Check network access
Make TCP ports 8080 and 1935 reachable through the server’s firewall and any cloud firewall. Port 8080 is Owncast’s default web port; port 1935 is its default RTMP ingest port. If the server is behind a router, firewall, or provider network, a local firewall rule alone may not be enough. Expose only the ports needed for the deployment, and avoid opening administrative access more broadly than necessary.
Run Owncast persistently
Starting ./owncast in a shell runs it in the foreground. That is useful for an initial check, but it does not make Owncast survive a reboot or automatically recover if the process crashes. For a persistent installation, use the Owncast systemd service instructions with a dedicated owncast account. The documented service configuration uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5; it also says not to run Owncast as root.
- Configure the Owncast systemd unit using the paths and account for your installation, following the current Owncast Linux service instructions.
- Enable and start the service with
sudo systemctl enable --now owncast. - Check its state with
sudo systemctl status owncast. - Follow its logs while testing with
sudo journalctl -u owncast -f.
Systemd can restart a crashed process, but it cannot restore a failed server, lost internet connection, full disk, or hosting outage. Treat those as separate operational risks.

Secure the admin account and stream key
Owncast documents default admin credentials and a default stream key. Change both promptly on a fresh installation; do not leave defaults in place or publish a working key in a screenshot, command, or configuration example. The admin password and stream key are separate settings: changing one does not replace the other. Use unique secrets, limit who can access them, and rotate them if they are exposed.

Send a test broadcast to Owncast
Once Owncast is running and port 1935 is reachable, configure a compatible encoder to publish to Owncast. Its documented RTMP endpoint is rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key. Replace the server and key with your own values, or enter the stream key in the encoder’s separate key field if it provides one. Never reuse a real key in a public example.
Start with a short test rather than a 24/7 session. Confirm that the encoder connects, the stream appears in Owncast, viewers can reach the viewing page, and the service logs show no recurring connection or process errors. If the encoder cannot connect, check the hostname, stream key, port 1935 at both firewall layers, and whether the Owncast service is active.

Configure YouTube as a separate destination
To broadcast on YouTube, configure an encoder with the YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Test with video and audio similar to the intended broadcast and monitor YouTube’s stream health before leaving a long session unattended.
The settings above apply to the encoder-to-YouTube connection. They do not make Owncast a relay. If you want the same program on Owncast and YouTube, choose a separately verified workflow that actually sends a video feed to both destinations and document what happens when either connection drops. Confirm which machine runs the encoder or relay and give that process its own restart and monitoring plan; the Owncast systemd service does not supervise unrelated software.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Peak throughput in Mbps: bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000.
- Transfer in GB: bitrate in kbps × duration in seconds × viewers ÷ 8,000,000.
As an illustrative Owncast example—not a hosting guarantee—4,000 kbps at 25 viewers requires 100 Mbps of peak throughput and uses 90 GB over two hours. That two-hour transfer would scale to 1,080 GB over 24 hours at the same bitrate and viewer count, before other traffic or overhead. Actual demand depends on concurrent viewers and the delivery setup. Multiple output qualities can change the calculation; Owncast also notes that S3-compatible object storage can offload video bandwidth.
Set expectations for archives
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what will happen to every longer continuous stream. If you need a particular archive or recording outcome, check the current Live Control Room behavior for your channel and plan session boundaries accordingly rather than assuming one uninterrupted session will produce a permanent archive.

| What to compare | Why it matters for a continuous stream |
|---|---|
| Outbound bandwidth allowance and sustained throughput | Viewer delivery can consume substantial transfer and needs enough peak capacity. |
| Port and firewall control | Owncast needs its web and RTMP ports reachable for the intended access pattern. |
| Server region and latency | Location affects network paths to the server and audience. |
| Restart and recovery behavior | Systemd can restart Owncast, but host and network availability are separate concerns. |
| Operating-system maintenance | A self-managed server requires someone to maintain Ubuntu, storage, security, and the service. |
| Billing and usage terms | Check recurring charges, bandwidth limits, and any additional usage costs before choosing a host. |
If you run the server on physical hardware, a UPS may help through brief power interruptions, but it is not an Owncast requirement and does not protect against an internet or provider outage. Cloud-server users do not need a UPS for this deployment.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Owncast’s web page does not load: check that the service is active, then verify TCP port 8080 through both the Ubuntu firewall and provider firewall.
- The encoder cannot publish to Owncast: confirm the server address, RTMP port 1935, endpoint path, and stream key; check firewall rules at both layers and inspect
journalctl -u owncast -f. - The service stops after logout or reboot: a foreground launch is not a boot-persistent service. Configure the systemd unit and enable it with
sudo systemctl enable --now owncast. - Owncast restarts but the stream does not return: systemd’s restart policy applies to the Owncast process. Check the encoder or any separate relay for its own reconnect settings and restart policy.
- Viewers experience buffering as the audience grows: compare actual concurrent viewers and bitrate with the outbound throughput estimate, then check the host’s sustained network capacity and transfer limits.
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: verify the YouTube URL and key in the encoder and inspect YouTube’s stream health. An Owncast connection alone is not a YouTube connection.
- A long stream does not produce the expected archive: YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition covers streams under 12 hours; confirm current behavior for longer sessions in Live Control Room.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not an Owncast relay. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud, so your computer can be off.
- Videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo also offers daily, weekly, six-month, and yearly billing; UPI and cards are supported in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
Copyright and channel suitability
A continuous schedule does not grant permission to use the video, music, game footage, or other material in it. Use content you own or are licensed to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content policies for your channel and intended use. Repeating a video does not by itself establish that the stream complies with those policies or qualifies for monetization.
