Set up Owncast and YouTube as separate streaming destinations, use each service’s own server address and stream key, and choose an encoder bitrate your Airtel connection can sustain consistently. YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live; Owncast’s default RTMP endpoint uses TCP port 1935 and the /live path.
Owncast and YouTube use different RTMP settings
An encoder sending to both services needs a separate output for each destination. Do not put the YouTube stream key into Owncast or use Owncast’s address as YouTube’s ingest URL.
| Setting | YouTube Live | Owncast |
|---|---|---|
| Server address | Copy the current server URL from YouTube Live Control Room; YouTube recommends RTMPS. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. | By default, rtmp://your-owncast-host:1935/live. Replace the example host with your Owncast server’s hostname or address. See Owncast’s broadcasting setup. |
| Stream key | Copy the key from YouTube Live Control Room and enter it only in the YouTube output. | Use the key configured for your Owncast server. Enter it separately when the encoder has a separate key field. If it requires one URL, Owncast documents appending the key as /live/<key>. |
| Server that must be reachable | YouTube’s ingest server, using the platform-provided stream details. | Your Owncast host. Its default RTMP listening port is TCP 1935; its web interface defaults to port 8080. The Owncast host and any relevant firewall or network rules must allow the needed access. See Owncast’s manual install guide. |
| Where to start diagnosing a failed output | Check the current YouTube stream URL and key, then follow YouTube’s encoder diagnostics. | Check the hostname, port, /live path, Owncast key, server status and firewall or security rules. |
If your encoder supports multiple outputs, configure each as its own destination. That is a practical way to send to both; neither service’s cited guidance establishes a universal one-click Owncast-to-YouTube relay.
Choose an encoder profile for Owncast
Owncast’s documented suggestions are starting points, not Airtel-tested presets. They do not guarantee that a particular broadband line or Owncast server can sustain the selected profile.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Resolution | Frame rate | Owncast suggested video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1920 × 1080 | 60 fps | 5000 kbps |
| 1920 × 1080 | 30 fps | 4500 kbps |
| 1280 × 720 | 60 fps | 4000 kbps |
| 1280 × 720 | 30 fps | 3000 kbps |
For compatibility, Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio. Set a two-second keyframe interval rather than leaving it on auto. In OBS, enter the interval in seconds. In FFmpeg, the -g value is a frame count, so use twice the frame rate—for example, 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. Owncast lists 96, 128, 192, 256 and 320 kbps as example audio bitrates, from low through highest quality. Consult Owncast’s broadcasting documentation for its current encoder guidance.
A practical starting point
If you are unsure where to begin, 1280 × 720 at 30 fps with 3000 kbps video is one of Owncast’s documented profiles. Test it during the kind of stream you plan to run. Lower the video bitrate or resolution if the encoder reports dropped frames or the stream disconnects; raising bitrate beyond what your connection and Owncast server can handle will not improve a stream reliably.

Check Airtel upload capacity instead of relying on the plan name
Airtel advertises broadband tiers that include examples up to 40, 100 and 300 Mbps, and 1 Gbps; availability and terms can change. Those advertised tiers are not a guarantee of sustained upload bitrate for your individual line. Airtel’s terms also publish 90th-percentile upload measurements for certain tiers, but those are population measurements—not a reading or promise for your connection. See Airtel’s broadband terms and its Xstream Fiber terms PDF.
- Run an upload speed test at a time and under household conditions similar to your planned stream. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate in its live encoder guidance.
- Choose a video bitrate below the upload capacity your connection consistently sustains, leaving room for fluctuations and other household traffic.
- Monitor your encoder’s network or dropped-frame indicators during a test stream. If they worsen, reduce bitrate or resolution and test again.
- If sending directly to two destinations, account for the combined outgoing traffic. This is a network-planning consideration; the providers do not give an Airtel-specific dual-output bitrate.
Set up separate outputs in your encoder
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions and use its recommended RTMPS option where supported.
- In Owncast, find the server’s RTMP address and configured stream key. With default settings, the address is
rtmp://your-owncast-host:1935/live; enter the key separately unless your encoder requires a single URL. - In your encoder, add YouTube and Owncast as separate outputs. Keep each destination’s URL and key paired correctly. Output controls differ by encoder, so consult its documentation for the exact interface.
- Apply the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate and two-second keyframe interval. Check that the Owncast host can handle the stream profile.
- Start a test and confirm that the output appears at each destination. If only one fails, troubleshoot that service’s output rather than changing both sets of credentials.
Troubleshoot an Owncast stream that disconnects
- YouTube rejects or does not receive the stream: Refresh the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, verify they are in the YouTube output, and use YouTube’s current encoder diagnostics.
- Owncast does not receive the stream: Verify the Owncast hostname, TCP port 1935,
/livepath and Owncast key. Confirm the Owncast server is running and its firewall or security rules permit RTMP traffic. - Viewers cannot open the Owncast web interface: Check that the web interface’s default port, 8080, or the relevant reverse-proxy route is reachable. This is separate from the RTMP ingest connection.
- The encoder reports dropped frames or unstable network: Test sustained upload, lower video bitrate or resolution, and check whether other household traffic is using the connection. Owncast identifies an unstable network or bitrate above sustainable upload as possible causes of disconnections.
- You suspect Wi-Fi instability: Connect the encoder computer to the Airtel router with a network cable and repeat the test. Airtel recommends a wired connection for troubleshooting. It can help isolate local Wi-Fi issues, but it cannot fix upstream congestion, a bitrate mismatch, blocked server ports or Owncast server limits. See Airtel’s Xstream Fiber troubleshooting guidance.
- Only one destination fails: Check that destination’s own endpoint and key first. YouTube and Owncast have distinct ingest requirements, so a failure at one does not by itself establish a problem with the other.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an encoder and connection at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
